Student design bureau as a form of organization of students’ scientific and technical creativity

At the initiative of S.P.Korolev, in 1959, Special Design Bureau No.1 (now RSC Energia) established the High-temperature Power Engineering and Electric Propulsion Center which was tasked with development of nuclear electric propulsion for heavy interplanetary vehicles. Selected as the source of electric power was a nuclear power unit based on a thermionic converter reactor, and selected as the engine was a stationary low-voltage magnetoplasmodynamic (MPD) high-power (0.5–1.0 MW) thruster which had thousands of hours of service life. The paper presents the results of extensive efforts in research, development, design, materials science experiments, and tests on the MPD-thruster, including the results of development and 500-hours life tests of an MPD-thruster with a 500-600 kW electric power input that used lithium propellant. The world’s first lithium 17 kW MPD-thruster was built and successfully tested in space. The paper points out that to this day nobody has surpassed the then achievements of RSC Energia neither in thruster output during long steady-state operation, nor in performance and service life. Innovation and inventive activities related to the development of highly efficient equipment, technological equipment, tools, means of mechanization and automation, and improvement of production technology are important in accelerating the pace of scientific and technological progress. Innovative and inventive activities are carried out on the basis of design and technological knowledge and skills. The greater the amount of this knowledge and skills the manufacturer has, and the deeper they are, the greater its potential capabilities are. Providing such opportunities to specialists is carried out within the walls of the Institutions of Higer EducationWestern Military District, in the process of teaching them the basics of scientific research, the basics of technical creativity of design and modelling. So far educational the design and technological activity is the preparation for the corresponding production activity, then the question arises: what is the content of design and technological activity in the conditions of modern production and what professional requirements it puts forward. To answer these questions, you need to analyze the activities of the designer and technologist. This analysis was carried out by us on the basis of literary sources and personal experience. The conducted researches confirm the importance of the systematic process of organizing and using intersubject relations, the necessity and expediency of applying the system of methods of technical creativity to activate the educational and cognitive activities of students of technological faculties of higher pedagogical institutions.

The authors of the article continue to publish materials on the development and design of gondola structures at the Ural car building plant. The article is devoted to the development of a gondola car by the Ural design Bureau in 1937 and its subsequent modernization. The design elements of the gondola car that differ from the previous model are considered: size, trolley, automatic coupling and brakes, manhole cover, parameters of the gondola car, etc. The results of the work of the Interdepartmental Commission are presented. A new design is considered: coupling buffer beam and the connection of the beams with the lower belt, the constituent elements of the cross section of a center girder and corner posts, etc.
