<p>Natural products have always been appreciated due to the awareness about environmental standards for global health by using green technologies in their isolation and extraction. Thereupon natural dyes have been used in all fields due to having ecofriendly, therapeutic and aesthetic nature. For the current study, microwave radiations (MW) have been used as a green extraction tool to explore the natural coloring potency of Tea leaves for the dyeing of cotton fabrics. For isolation of natural dye from tea leaves in aqueous and basic media MW irradiation for 1-6 min has been given and used to dye cotton fabric. It has been evaluated that an increase in color yield (K/S) with the use of 6 min of microwave energy when basic extract of tea leaves was used to dye onto cotton fabric. It has been also revealed that in the case of the pre-mordanting method, 6% of Cu and 8% of Fe as a post mordanting method give the best fastness properties and the highest color yields. It is concluded that MW energy has an excellent ability for isolation of colorant from Tea leaves for dyeing of cotton fabric under reduced optimal dyeing conditions.</p>

Development of chitosan as a thickener for direct printing of natural dye on cotton fabric was investigated. Chitosan was applied as a thickener at various concentrations and its effect on the print properties was determined in comparison with the typical printing thickener, sodium alginate. The results exhibited that chitosan affected the fabric properties by increasing fabric yellowness and stiffness. However, with increasing chitosan concentrations, the yellowness reduced only marginally. Direct printing on cotton fabric with 3% Natural Chestnut at varying chitosan concentrations showed that the optimum chitosan concentration for the printing was at 3%w/v, being equivalent to the viscosity of 17,800 mPa. The 3%w/v chitosan imparted the ultimate color yield, print outline sharpness and a minimal dye bleeding on the unprinted area of the fabric. Use of chitosan concentration higher than 3%w/v led to poor print properties on the fabric. The efficiency as a thickener of chitosan was found to be superior to sodium alginate. A high color yield and good color fastness properties on cotton fabric were rendered in the case of chitosan thickener at the same applied concentration with sodium alginate.

The main goal of this work was to study the possibility of improving the natural dye uptake and their fastness properties on cotton fabrics by the application of monochlorotriazine-β- cyclodextrin (MCT-β-CD). Hence, MCT-β-CD was synthesized, characterized, and grafted on cotton fabrics via pad and cure method. The existence of MCT-β-CD on cotton fabrics was confirmed by nitrogen content (%N). Natural dyes used were colorants extracted from turmeric and cassumunar powders, and a commercial natural dye i.e. Natural Red Brown. The commercial one was water soluble whereas the extracted dyes were sparingly soluble in water. These natural dyes were applied on cotton by pad-dry method. The extracted dyes on MCT-β-CD treated cotton fabrics gave higher visual color yield (K/S) than the untreated ones. In contrast, a commercial natural dye exhibited lower color yield on the treated fabrics because of its water soluble nature. The color fastnesses of the natural dyes on the treated cotton fabrics were improved from the untreated cotton samples.

Natural dye was extracted from the mangosteen pericarps using UE method. The work dealed with the investigation of cotton fabric samples dyed with natural dye. The effects of different dye concentrations and pH values were estimated by the dye-uptake(K)and the color difference(△E). And the effects of different dyeing methods of direct dyeing, pre-mordant and after-mordant were tested when alum was used as a mordant. The highest K and △E were obtained on using pre-mordant method when dye concentration was used as 30g/L and pH value as 3. And the color fastness properties of rubbing, washing and perspiration were tested. Compared with the pre-mordant method, it was quite satisfactory for after-mordant method where its ranged between 2-3 to 4-5.

Indigo, one of the oldest dyes, has a very important role for the textile sector. It is primarily used to dye cotton clothes, and blue jeans and over one billion pairs of jeans around the world are dyed blue with indigo. Although Sodium Hydrosulfite (Na2S2O4) is used as a reducing agent in most indigo dyeing processes, it is environmentally unfavorable because of the resultant contaminated toxic wastewater. In addition, the color fastnesses of dyed samples using Na2S2O4 as reducing agent are not good enough.In the present paper sodium borohydride (NaBH4) were used as ecologically safe reduction systems for the indigo dyeing of cotton fabric. After dyeing processes, the color yield and fastnesses according to washing and rubbing were measured, and results were compared.It was found when NaBH4 was used as reducing agent instead of Na2S2O4, the color yield and the fastness properties of the dyed samples improved.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore a new eco-friendly green textile dyeing. Natural plant Buddleja officinalis is traditionally used as yellow pigment addition in rice. It is worth developing its application and dyeing performance in cotton fabric. Design/methodology/approach Buddleja officinalis dried flower was extracted with ethanol aqueous. The extraction conditions including ethanol concentration, material to liquor ratio, extract time and temperature were optimized. Then cotton fabrics were dyed with Buddleja officinalis extraction under conventional and ultrasonic conditions. The effects of dyeing time, bath ratio, pH value of dyeing bath, dyeing temperature and mordants on K/S values were studied and the resulting color strength obtained by conventional and ultrasonic dyeing were compared. The ultraviolet (UV) transmittance of Buddleja officinalis dyed cotton fabric was also evaluated. Findings The color strength of the fabric dyed with Buddleja officinalis under ultrasonic conditions was higher than that under conventional conditions. Alum, Fe and Cu as simultaneous mordants improved the K/S value of the dyed cotton fabrics. Both washing fastness and rubbing fastness were fairly good in all Buddleja officinalis dyed cotton fabrics, washing fastness = 3–4 and rubbing fastness = 4. What’s more, the dyed cotton fabrics showed lower transmittance values as compared to undyed cotton fabrics and indicated potential UV protection capability. Practical implications Buddleja officinalis can be a new natural dye source for the ultrasonic dyeing of cotton fabric. Originality/value It is for the first time that Buddleja officinalis is used as a natural dye in cotton fabric dyeing with less water and the dyeing using ultrasound has been found to have an obvious improvement in the color strength and color-fastness.

Chitosan, a naturally available biopolymer, was used as finishing agent to increase dye uptake and color fastness of cotton fabrics. Thian King leaves extract a natural dye was applied on cotton fabrics after chitosan treatment. The whiteness index and tensile strength of samples were measured to study the effect of chitosan application. The color of dyed samples was investigated in term of the colorimetric parameters (L*, a*, b*, ∆E) and K/S values. The color fastness to washing, rubbing and light of dyed samples was determined according to AATCC test method. The results showed that the chitosan concentration enhances the whiteness index and tensile strength of the treated cotton fabrics. Chitosan treatment showed increase dye uptake of cotton fabrics. Fastness properties of these to washing, rubbing and light have also been discussed.

This study investigated the use of a thickening agent derived from modified starch of wild taro corms in the screen printing of cotton fabric using reactive dye. The best conditions for developing the print paste and steaming time in order to obtain maximum color yield were established. The results revealed impressive color fastness properties in the printed samples; although, the printed fabric possessed slightly lesser tensile and tear strength, in comparison with the unprinted fabric. The printed fabric also exhibited increased bending stiffness properties. Largely, this study reveals that the printing paste containing the thickening agent derived from carboxymethyl starch within wild taro corms can be utilized in the printing of cotton fabric using reactive dye.

Plants, which are the biggest source of natural dyes, have been used as coloring agents since the beginning of humanity. In this study, the usability of eastern groundsel, which is thought to be an alternative for the textile dyeing industry, especially for sustainable and renewable textile production, was investigated. Dyeing processes were performed with different concentrations of dyeing baths of natural dye which is extracted from the crowns of the eastern groundsel (Senecio vernalis) plant. After dyeing, dye flotte concentrations were determined using UV-visible spectrophotometer and the percent uptake of natural dye on cotton fabric was measured Spectrophotometric color analysis of the fabrics was performed and fastnesses of the samples were evaluated. It was found that the coloration of cotton fabrics with the use of Eastern groundsel (Senecio vernalis) in suitable dyeing application conditions could be managed with almost sufficient fastnesses.

Cotton fabric samples were printed with acacia catechu willd. using reactive-printing technique has been investigated. The effect of different factors, i.e. quantities of urea, thickening agent and Sodium bicarbonate has been studied. The printed goods were evaluated by measuring the K/S values and the overall fastness properties. The results show that the colour strength (K/S) value of recipe 3 was the best printed result, and the next good result was obtained in the order of recipe 2 and recipe 1. The colour fastness results were ranging between fair and good level.

Cotton fabric was directly inkjet printed with reactive dye ink, the ink would appear on the permeability of the fabric, the depth of color yield is low, light fastness is poor. Pretreatment agents with different mass fractions had been used to do the pretreatment of the cotton fabric before ink-jet printing, the results showed that: when the concentration of alginate ester or seaweed was between 1.0% -1.5%, the fabrics had the high color yield and the fixation color rate of the dye was the highest. When the amount of NaHCO3 was 3%, the inkjet printing effect of cotton fabrics was the best; color fastness of colors was all good. After Inkjet printing, the best effect can be achieved by steaming the cotton fabrics under the 100 °Csaturated water vapor for 25min: the colors of black, red and yellow of the K / S value were of the maximum, color fastness was fine.
