This study investigated the use of a thickening agent derived from modified starch of wild taro corms in the screen printing of cotton fabric using reactive dye. The best conditions for developing the print paste and steaming time in order to obtain maximum color yield were established. The results revealed impressive color fastness properties in the printed samples; although, the printed fabric possessed slightly lesser tensile and tear strength, in comparison with the unprinted fabric. The printed fabric also exhibited increased bending stiffness properties. Largely, this study reveals that the printing paste containing the thickening agent derived from carboxymethyl starch within wild taro corms can be utilized in the printing of cotton fabric using reactive dye.

The aim of the research was to make high protein instant tiwul from mocaf which was substituted with jack bean flour and given a food grade commercial thickener to improve its sensory aspect. The study used a randomized block design. The factors studied were germination treatment on jack bean (G), without pre germination (G1) and with pre germination (G2); Proportion of mocaf: jack bean flour : tapioca (w/w) (F), P1 = 75:15:10, P2 = 70:20:10 and P3 = 65:25:10 and Addition of Commercial food grade thickening agent (w/w; % to flour weight) (K), K1 = 0.5%, K2 = 0.75% and K3 = 1.0%. The variables studied were physicochemical properties (moisture content, ash content, formol value, rehydration ability, for the best treatment, protein and fat content were tested) and sensory properties. Data were analyzed by F test (ANOVA) and continued with DMRT (Duncan Multiple Range Test). Based on the effectiveness index test, the best instant tiwul was G2P3K3 (with pre germination; proportion of mocaf-jack bean flour-tapioca w/w 65:25:10; commercial food grade thickening agent 1%). This instant tiwul has a water content of 4.39% wb; protein 7.05%db (6.74%wb), fat 6.39% db (6.11%wb), ash 0.98%db (0.93%wb) and carbohydrates (by difference) 85.54% db (81.78% wb), coefficient rehydration 3,67 and formol value 0,0383 ml NaOH 0,1N/g bk.

This work is a systematic study of the strength and ultrasonic properties of cemented paste backfill incorporating a foaming agent, known as foam-cemented paste backfill (FCPB). Based on determining the optimal admixture contents (foaming stabilizer, thickening agent, and foaming agent), a series of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted to determine the relationship between the UCS of FCPB and four influencing factors, i.e., cement–tailings ratio (CTR), solid content (SC), curing time (T), and foaming agent content (FC). To analyze the sensitivity of UCS to these four factors, grey relational analysis (GRA) was introduced. Moreover, UCS results were correlated with the corresponding ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) parameters. The results indicate that the optimal contents of foaming stabilizer, thickening agent and foaming agent are 0.5%, 0.6%, and 1%–3%, respectively. The UCS of FCPB exponentially increases with CTR and SC, while it logarithmically and linearly increases with T and FC, respectively. CTR has the most significant influence, followed by T, SC, and FC. There exists an evidently linear relationship between UPV and UCS of FCPB regardless of CTR, SC, T and FC. These results contribute to understanding the properties of hardened FCPB and to sound designs in practice.

Abstract Introduction One of the therapies that Speech and Language Therapy SALT) provide is a level to which fluids must be thickened to ensure a safe swallow. The thickening agent should be supplied by the hospital to the patient on discharge. This requires the thickening agent to be added to the electronic discharge letter (EDL) and, ‘To Take Out’ (TTO) medication list by ward doctors. Method samples of 10-20 EDLs, taken from SALT list of stroke patients between interventions. Cycle 1: SALT were initially attempting to contact the physicians responsible for writing the EDL Cycle 2: SALT kept a register of patients that they had seen the recommended thickener prescription. This list was kept in the doctor’s office. This list was mentioned in handover every morning for doctors to update EDL Cycle 3: The aforementioned list was continued, and responsibility for transfer onto EDLs was delegated to the on call Senior House Officer (SHO) Cycle 4: In addition to the above measures, custom made stickers were added to the prescription chart as an indicator to add thickener to the TTO. Results Cycle 1: 20% Prescribed (n = 10) Cycle 2: 78% Prescribed n = 18) Cycle 3: 93% Prescribed (n = 14) Cycle 4: 100% Prescribed (n = 10). Conclusion This project has built up a multidisciplinary system to a multidisciplinary problem. Through repeated cycles and system improvement, we have seen and demonstrated a collaborative effort resulting in consistent and improving results.
