Urban Development refers to many topics such as: increased population density, city size, and individual’s production, distribution of technology and the growth of commercial, industrial and service professions. Such development is linked to the coordination of social and cultural trends in order to achieve social progress and economical prosperity. Knowledge as a topic now is known as intellectual capital wich led to upgrae the concept of urban development to be extended into many fields of knowledge, for example, cultural, social and human development to move the level of community culture into a new better standard. The research adopted the urban transformation based on knowledge as an important factor in growth and development of contemporary cities. T he lack of studies regarding this was the research problem which led to a hypothesis set as (Knowledge-based urban development is an important tool in contemporary cities growth). Research aimed (to build a knowledge frame-work related to knowledge-based urban development impact on contemporary cities growth) through the following sequence: Creating a knowledge-based urban development literature review. Clarifying the relationship between the knowledge-based urban development and knowledge workers. Determining the theoretical framework to recognize level of impact of knowledge-based urban development on the city growth. Testing the hypothesis according to the theoretical framework in selecting designated cities such as Sydney & Melbourne were selected as a case study, since they represent good examples for knowledge cities. The research concluded that: knowledge-based urban development in cities depend on technical economic and community directories as a mechanism to achieve knowledge-based economy and build a new spatial relationship (Knowledge City). Keywords: knowledge-based urban development, knowledge, knowledge workers, knowledge-based economy, Knowledge City. The research themes of geography of industry are continually evolving. The dynamic development of this sector of the economy after 1945 in the conditions of the socialist economy, in which the processes of industrialisation of the country were treated as priorities, as well as the processes of economic transformation in Poland after 1989, influencing the changes in the previously developed socio-economic structures, including industry structures, influenced the shaping of the research problem of this sub-discipline of geography in Poland. These changes, leading to the adaptation of these structures to the changing management principles, take place under the influence of impulses from the international environment associated with building a knowledge-based economy and moving from the industrial and post-industrial phase to the informational phase of civilisation development. These essential issues of transformation of industrial structures in the period of economic transformation and the development of a knowledge-based economy have become the subject of interest of many researchers, including economic geographers. The article presents the evolution of the themes and the main directions of research on structural changes in Polish industry in the conditions of transition from the centrally planned economy to market economy. In conclusion, it is shown that Polish geography of industry has undertaken significant scientific and economic problems of structural changes in industry during the period of economic transformation, continually updating its research priorities. Researchers quickly reacted to changes in the legal and political conditions of the functioning of the national economy, despite numerous barriers, related to, among other things, limited access to data on industrial activities, resulting in the lower interest of geographers in industrial research. The paper ends with recommendations regarding future possible research directions and a comprehensive bibliography of the studies.

In the global knowledge economy, knowledge-intensive industries and knowledge workers are extensively seen as the primary factors to improve the welfare and competitiveness of cities. To attract and retain such industries and workers, cities produce knowledge-based urban development strategies, where such strategising is an important development mechanism for cities and their economies. This paper investigates knowledge-based urban development strategies of Brisbane, Australia that support generation, attraction, and retention of investment and talent. The paper puts forward a clear understanding on the policy frameworks, and relevant applications of Brisbane’s knowledge-based urban development experience in becoming a prosperous knowledge city, and concludes by providing invaluable insights and directions for other cities seeking knowledge-based urban development.

In today’s information society and knowledge based economy one of the main development factors is the use of electronic forms of creating and conveying information. However, there is a terminological and management problem with the volume of the processed information as well as the increasing number and variety of forms of presenting and conveying the information. In the last few years the fields of socio-economic sciences as well as technical and engineering studies have encompassed a new keyword – “content”, which in the Polish terminology is usually translated as “treść”. The language of economy, management and IT have lastingly embraced such terms as Content Management, Enterprise Content Management, Content Marketing or the most recent ones – Social Content or Content Governance. Content is an abstract and multi-meaning term whose use, despite its huge popularity, leads to many ambiguities and causes many interpretation problems. The first research question posed in this paper is – for how long has the term content been functioning in our environment? The paper presents the evolution of electronic information forms processed in IT systems for several decades now. The paper offers a broad definition of the term content as well as its most recent form –intelligent content. The second research problem presented in the paper involve the relations between the term content and the classic hierarchical concept – i.e. the Data–Information–Knowledge–Wisdom model (DIKW). The first conclusion is the statement that content is a category that encompasses the following processed in electronic form: data, information and the part of knowledge that can be formalized and recorded, i.e. explicit knowledge. The second conclusion from analyzing the functions played by content in the process of the organizational creation of knowledge is that content is the most important strategic medium in knowledge management within an information and knowledge based society.

Today, knowledge is addressed as a key driver in urban development. From an urban planner’s perspective, however, it seems that the knowledge we talk about is out there in so-called knowledge industries. Knowledge-based urban development refers to development of city regions that are more or less driven by the knowledge economy, or to opportunities to attract knowledge workers in order to fuel economic growth in specific areas. The aim of this chapter is conceptualizing what knowledge and learning mean to, and in, contemporary planning praxis. The chapter discusses the key concepts of knowing and their relation to doing. By mooting a theory of assemblages, the chapter further provides a foundation for the analysis and the enforcement of learning in urban development praxis. Drawing on research on learning organizations, this chapter provides a basis for the contribution of urban planning to knowledge-based urban development.

Diffusion of knowledge is recognized as one of the key factors that determines organizational success in the knowledge-based economy. The research problem concerns the way social networks and organizational culture may influence knowledge sharing among the agents in general. This article presents the review and critical analysis of literature on the diffusion of knowledge from network and cultural perspective. The results of the research show that both social networks and organizational culture might support the flow of knowledge in different ways. The quality and quantity of organizational knowledge depend on different ties between employees, organizational departments, and between an organization and its environment. The conditions for diffusion of knowledge are provided by the knowledge culture, which differs depending on choosing codification or personalization as leading strategy of knowledge management, as well as on set of key organizational values.

The growing importance of creative knowledge workers as a resource of particular significance for the growth of organizations is becoming one of the greatest challenges of the knowledge-based economy. Thus, the growing role of creative organizations contributes to building the economic potential of cities, regions, countries, but also of various organizations operating in the market. The development of civilization at its current stage has always been a source of this type of activity. Hence, the issue of understanding how creative knowledge workers operate has been and continues to be addressed by researchers around the world in recent years. The topic presented in this article on the knowledge and creativity of employees and their impact on the growth of creative organizations to a certain extent responds to this demand. The aim of the article is to clarify and extend the conceptualization in terms of creative activities performed by knowledge workers and the correlations with their characteristics and with knowledge initiatives. Achieving the set aim would allow to indicate that modern development depends on the proper generation of knowledge and creativity and the resources offered by an organization to facilitate its absorption in terms of growth prospects. The article reviews the research on cognitive, theoretical, methodological, and empirical issues regarding the development of creative knowledge workers employed in creative organizations as well as characteristics of workers and knowledge initiatives introduced in organizations. The analysis of the literature allowed to establish a research framework and indicate which knowledge initiatives are important and which characteristics of selected employees may be related to creative activities. Empirical verification was carried out through the analysis of basic descriptive statistics with Spearman’s ρ rank correlation and the relationship between nominal and ordinal variables using chi-square tests. The results of the study revealed significant relationships between the performance of creative activities and certain characteristics of knowledge workers as well as between the performance of creative activities and the introduction of knowledge initiatives. It turned out that the knowledge of the nature of the connections between the mentioned activities and knowledge initiatives is the basis for determining which knowledge initiatives in the case of a given creative organization will bring the best results in the form of taking effective creative activities by knowledge workers. Moreover, a person who performs creative activities has only some of the characteristics presented in this article. The research results are particularly relevant to the development of creative knowledge workers employed in creative organizations. Setting out guidelines aimed at changing this state of affairs and the research conducted allowed the identification of areas for improvement in order to ensure that they develop more effectively and meet the demands of competitiveness, generating more innovative ideas.

This chapter provides a view on the healthy city project that started in the 1980s. The healthy city project is a WHO initiative launched to incorporate health in the agenda of city governments. One of the main challenges in the project implementation is the evidence synthesis, especially at local levels. The author explores this limitation in the literature relevant to the healthy city project. The author conducted a narrative review to examine the position of different aspects of evidence-informed policymaking in the studied literature and documents. Four categories of research work were charted: Theoretical Framework, Guides, Measurement, and Evidence Use in Urban Planning. The chapter concludes that despite the increased efforts, there is a room for further development of knowledge-based policymaking. More attention to the actual practice of using evidence in policymaking and outputs of such a process should be given despite focusing on the inputs of the process.
