Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Albania, similar to other markets, operate in complex, fast-paced and unpredictable environments due to their size and nature. In our contemporary knowledge-based economy, business is constantly changing, and SMEs are thus continually faced with the challenge to find new and innovative ways to improve and adapt to the rapid transformations. As a result, there is a growing interest and necessity for SMEs to explore and adapt new and innovative mechanisms for better decision making, which will then lead to improved performance and competitiveness. Digitalization of SMEs with the use of Business Intelligence (BI) and Knowledge Management (KM) systems is one such innovative instrument open to SMEs for a better performance and increased competitiveness.

The article focuses on the study of prevailing decision making styles of Small Scale Industrial (SSI) Units. It presents data collected from 200 SSI units from Bhavnagar – a coastal city of Gujarat, India. The objective of writing the article is to depict heuristic decision patterns of small and medium enterprises, and the rare use of analytical or statistical business intelligence tools in decision making processes. It would be interesting to study the design of decision taken on routine basis in small units, poorly equipped with technology and technical know-how. The paper is descriptive in terms, and lays a lucid picture of present decision making processes.

Knowledge is regarded as the most important asset for sustainable success in today’s knowledge-based economy, and it has become the main competitive tool for many businesses. Proper capture and reuse of knowledge reduces the risk of “reinventing the wheel.” Building surveyors play a major role in building maintenance. Owing to the unique nature of building maintenance, building surveyors need sufficient knowledge and experience to facilitate their decision-making process. Apart from gaining this knowledge and experience by direct participation, learning from others is a sound alternative. However, insufficiencies have been found in the current practice on this aspect, and thus the aim of this chapter is to study whether a proposed Web-based prototype knowledge management system would be a feasible solution for capturing and reusing knowledge and experience in building maintenance. A questionnaire survey was conducted in this research to study the opinions of professional building surveyors on the capture and reuse of knowledge and experience in building maintenance, as well as the requirements of a proposed Web-based prototype system.

Business intelligence (BI) solutions are aimed to help managers make decisions in enterprises. Through complex analysis, decision-makers are supported in building strategies of operation. Managers in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are also becoming more aware of the fact that conventional methodology of analysis of current events is insufficient. Therefore, the need arises for using the solutions that support the processes of data analysis, finding relationships between each other or pointing to important tendencies and anomalies. These systems were primarily oriented at larger enterprises. However, BI solutions are more and more often adjusted to SME enterprises, offering a complex tool to support decision-making processes. This paper presents key stages in evolution of BI systems and characterizes selected BI systems dedicated to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Substantial barriers to implementation of BI systems in SMEs were also indicated.

Triple helix model is a model of a knowledge-based economy, which collaborates with the university, business, and government sectors to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) boost their business. The issue is the three actors have not yet synergized optimally in the development of SMEs. Hence, this study was to identify the critical success factors of the triple helix model for SMEs. This study employed a meta-ethnography and factor analysis to obtain components and indicators of the success factors. The result showed that 37 items of critical success factors have good content validity and excellent homogeneity reliability. Based on these success factors, a triple helix model consisting of six stages has developed. It indicates that these critical success factors make an essential contribution to the development and success of SMEs to achieve the goal of the program.JEL Classification: L52, L53

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the characteristics of intellectual capital (IC) in Mexican small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Due to the shift from traditional factors of production to knowledge-based economy, an understanding of the role of IC has become crucial for SMEs to develop a competitive advantage. Design/methodology/approach – This study takes an in depth look at the three components of IC: human, organizational, and external capital. In order to do so, a quantitative study on 445 SMEs was conducted based on data collected through an online survey. A structural equation model is proposed that is a fit with the reality of Mexican SMEs. Regional differences are highlighted by means of multigroup analysis. Findings – The results suggest that the features of human and organizational capital are consistent with previous studies on SMEs in emerging economies. However, external capital shows some distinctive characteristics unique to Mexican context. Practical implications – Implications for managers and policymakers are discussed, whereby an adaptation of programs and policies are required to fit the Mexican context at the national and regional levels. Originality/value – To the best of the authors knowledge, this is the first study that observes the components of IC in Mexican SMEs.

In this era of knowledge-based economy, intellectual capital (IC) is considered as a critical component in an organizational effort to emphasize on accomplishing competitive advantages and enhancing value added for the organization. Besides concentrating only on new product innovations, small and medium enterprises should also be engaged in managing IC in accordance to Islamic teachings. An understanding to Islamic ethics and its upshots for superior performance facilitates entrepreneurs in managing IC strategically. This paper aims to re-scrutinize several contributions in Islamic ethics and IC in SME entrepreneurial researches, ascertain the main elements of IC as well as Islamic work ethics (IWE); and thus show how IWE is relevant for research in the area of IC.

Globalization era is marked by the vast development of knowledge, technology and information, which is competitively incline. Considering the fact that the global competitiveness continously grows tighter, the paradigm needs to change from resources-based competitiveness to knowledge-based competitiveness. The study on knowledge management towards fishery SMEs (Small and Medium Entreprises) tends to apply tacit knowledge directly among the persons rather than the explicit knowledge. The knowledge management is believed to be invented due to the role of the social capital in the form of trust, norm, and network that proceeds continuously among both the internal SMEs and external institutions. This research was conducted in Ambon as one of the ‘minapolitan area’ in Indonesia, and employed descriptive research method and phenomenology approach based on the assumption of reality reconstruction. As the result, this research found that the knowledge management is evidently created as a form of the social capital role both inside and outside the fishery SMEs areas.

Globalization, bringing about universal and dynamic transformations in every sector of the economy, is placing organizations everywhere in new and different competitive situations. In this context, the improvement of enterprise performance and economic growth makes increased demands for timely knowledge in the workplace to deliver competitive, knowledge-intensive work, enabling institutions and nations to maintain their vitality through economic growth and increased productivity. This chapter highlights the European strategy towards a knowledge-based society where innovation and competitiveness are the goals to be achieved. The Portuguese scenario concerning small and medium enterprises and the creation of a Portuguese knowledge and information economy are also described. Some approaches to knowledge management (KM), contributing to understanding the scope of this emergent domain, are introduced. The skills and competencies that a knowledge manager should develop in order to perform his/her job are discussed. The chapter concludes by mapping the main areas of study and practice that the authors consider as relevant to performing an effective knowledge management function.

Traditionally SMEs have resource constraints in the form of information, finance and reach in the market, ICT is vital to promote strategy, performance, and growth. Moreover, Oman boasts of very high mobile phone penetration and highly connected youth, the impact of ICT in the performance of SMEs becomes all the more pronounced. This paper focuses to study the impact of the use of ICT on the organization performance in small and medium enterprises in Oman. In a knowledge-based economy, SMEs face both opportunities and challenges due to the development of ICTs. Within the country, SMEs are of huge economic and social importance and play an important role in mobilizing domestic financial resources and competencies, as well as increasing savings and channeling them into investment areas. Here comes the role of technology, where the development and innovation in ICT increase the productivity of the individual and benefit from the knowledge, science, and technology. The significance of the findings of this study is valuable to all the stakeholders – owners/managers, sponsors, entrepreneurs, financial institutions and government. The outcome of the study point towards the direction needed to make informed decisions and formulate policies about ICT investments in the country.
