Background: During pregnancy many demands are made by growing fetus, to meet these requirements maternal system has to undergo certain changes. Garbhinichardi (Emesis Gravidarum) is one among them and this has been termed as Gruhita Garbha Lakshanas (Immediate signs of conception) in Ayurvedic clas-sics. Approximately 80 % of pregnant women experience excessive salivation, nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, commonly known as “morning sickness”, which is seen frequently throughout the day. Design: This is single blind pilot study. 30 patients with complaints of Garbhinichardi (Emesis Gravidarum) in first trimester were included in this study. Patients were given Chaturjatachurna (Chatutjata powder)for a peri-od of 2 weeks in dose of 3gms thrice a day after meal with Anupana (Adjuvant) as Madhu (honey) of 5ml mixed with Tandulodaka (Raw rice water) Results: This pilot study showed statistically significant changes with Chaturjatachurna in reducing the complaints of pregnant women such as nausea (p<0.001), vomiting (p<0.001) and Aruchi (Anorexia) (p<0.001) in their first trimester of pregnancy. Conclusion: Chaturjata-churna was effective in the management of Garbhini Chardi (Emesis Gravidarum) and other symptoms in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Emesis is a common side and adverse effect associated with many illnesses, even drugs. It is the act or process of vomiting. Causes vary from pregnancy, morning sickness, motion sickness, chemotherapy and so on. Emetics are drugs or substances that induce vomiting. Antiemetics are agents given to stop vomiting and to stop the nauseous feeling. Morinda lucida, Benth. family, Rubiacae. It is commonly known as brimstone tree. It is about 24m long, the branches are fibrous in nature and does not break easily, the tree bark is brown to grey, the leaves are green with green fruits. This project is focused on the pharmacognostic evaluation and antiemetic activities of the ethanol extract of the leaves of Morinda lucida. The plants were properly collected and identified by a taxonomist, then, air dried at room temperature, blended using an electric miller. The ethanol leaf extract of the plant was obtained using cold maceration, filtered and concentrated using rotary evaporator. The extract was used for antiemetic evaluations, pharmacognostic and chromatographic (thin layer chromatography) evaluations. The LD50 was determined using Lorkes method. Pharmacognostic evaluation shows the presence of, lignin, cellulose, saponin, tannis, alkaloids flavonoids. The LD50 shows that there was no death recorded. The result of the research shows that the ethanol extract of Morinda lucida on 2 weeks old chickens exhibited antiemetic effect. It can therefore be concluded that the ethanol extract of Morinda lucida possess antiemetic activity as claimed and the result of these findings can be of great importance to the development of new antiemetic drug.

A spermicide used with most barrier contraceptives causes birth defects; the whooping cough vaccine causes brain damage; incompetence by obstetricians is a leading cause of cerebral palsy; the morning sickness drug Debendox caused an epidemic of birth defects; environmental pollutants cause chemically-induced AIDS. All of these stories have been reported and all are false. But, as Peter Huber wrote in Galileo's Revenge: Junk Science in the Court Room, they were not reported only in the gutter press and on the TV mid-day quasi documentaries; they were reported in the annals of U.S. and U.K. jurisprudence. One amazing case was a successful $1 million award to a soothsayer who, with expert testimony supporting her, claimed that a CAT scan had removed her psychic powers. Imagine that epidemiological study we would need to do to prove that one! Imagine the debate over the outcome measures!

Thalidomide, the drug responsible for the deformities of thousands of babies born in the 1950s, appears to be making a comeback. Scientists have recently reported that the sedative, once widely prescribed in Europe for morning sickness but long since banned for such use, may inhibit the AIDS virus as well as alleviate certain symptoms associated with tuberculosis and cancer. The first American patent for thalidomide was issued in 1958, but last week Gilla Kaplan, an associate professor of immunology at Rockefeller University who pioneered the new thalidomide research, received a patent covering new potential applications for the drug. "Thalidomide is really the treatment of choice for leprosy," she said. "It alleviates the weight loss and fevers. I figured if I knew how thalidomide worked I would understand what is causing the symptoms." "... thalidomide slows the body's production of a substance known as tumor necrosis factor alpha, a protein that at normal levels actually helps combat infection and malignant cells. But high concentrations of the protein appear to result in fever, weight loss, and other symptoms in patients with cancer, tuberculosis, and AIDS.
