Tertiary programs in a discipline such as engineering must balance the competing needs and requirements of two key stakeholders: the university that designs and delivers the program, and the professional body that accredits the program. Program and curriculum design in universities is traditionally rather bottom-up in nature, with courses designed by individual academics, and assembled into cognate programs. Graduate qualities and accreditation criteria are typically mapped retrospectively onto the program structure. Designing such programs from the top down, driven by the needs of the university and the accreditation body, is a desirable goal. However, without proper support tools, such a top-down design process, balancing competing needs across multiple courses and year levels, is a complex and rarely smooth task. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) was created, in the domain of product and system design, for this precise purpose. Treating the design of a tertiary program the same as the design of a system suggests that QFD, and the implementation tool known as the House of Quality (HoQ), should be ideally suited to this purpose. The aim of this paper is to show how QFD and the HoQ can be applied to the design of an engineering program, creating a specification that accurately reflects the voices of stakeholders, and serves as a benchmark for validating that these needs have been met in the implemented design.

In line with the current global focus on sustainability and the well-being of the planet, becoming a professional engineer nowadays requires more than simple mastery of technical skills. Considering that engineers are required to have a deep sense of responsibility not only for humankind but also for the environment, engineering education and practices must be reformed substantially to prepare engineers that will contribute to sustainable development. This necessitates updating conventional engineering programs (CEE) to incorporate Humanizing Engineering Education (HEE). Although HEE is an old practice of individual engineers and other organizations outside the academic field, it is relatively new in academic engineering. While the definition of what truly merits being considered HEE remains debatable, many engineers believe that their work involves a humanitarian aspect. To streamline the development of HEE, there is a need for developing guidelines and frameworks for a comprehensive model. Ideally, that framework should integrate humanizing pedagogy in the new curriculum design. The objective of the paper is to share the experience of the authors in designing a new curriculum for a Materials Engineering Programme (MEP) that is embedded with Humanitarian Engineering (HE), which is among the main elements of HEE. Data collection was through interviews, qualitative surveys, reports from the stakeholders, accreditation bodies and benchmarking with other Higher Learning Institutions (HLI). An extensive scholarly literature review was executed to identify shortcomings in CEE and how it could be reformed by integrating it with HEE. The Sejahtera Academic Framework (SAF); a strategic framework for academic programmes developed by the university, was used as a reference to customize MEP to better meet students’ needs. Since the proposed model applies a new emerging concept, it inevitably raises challenges related to different levels of understanding among course implementers and perceptions of external stakeholders. Moreover, the developers had to consider the limitations imposed by the university's policies and structures while acknowledging the availability of finite resources (i.e. time, money, equipment, and expertise).

This work presents the advances being made on a research project addressing curriculum processes for the development of competencies at the San Juan National University’s Faculty of Engineering (Argentina) in the framework of institutional policies that seek to make its programs of study appropriate for the second generation of accreditation standards. This is an exploratory, descriptive and interpretative study that is currently in the analytic phase, during which time we have carried out a characterization of the study plans currently in force for seven engineering programs in place at the university. In this sense, we describe both the institutional transformation related to the creation of accreditation standards and the perspectives of institutional actors as regards the curriculum design of the San Juan National University Faculty of Engineering’s programs, analyzing the institutional dynamic that emerges from said process.Received: 27 December 2019Accepted: 04 March 2020Published online: 19 May 2020

AbstractOne area in which medical students can add significant value is medical education, and involving them as key stakeholders in their education can have a profound impact on students and the institutions that serve them. However, detailed descriptions of the structure, implementation and quality of programs facilitating student engagement are lacking. We describe the structure of a novel student engagement program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine-Chicago (UICOM-Chicago) known as the Student Curricular Board (SCB). We surveyed 563 medical students across all levels of training at our institution in order to examine the impact of this program, including its strengths and potential areas of improvement. The SCB serves as a highly structured and collaborative student group that has far-reaching involvement from course-level program evaluation to longitudinal curriculum design. Medical students overwhelmingly valued opportunities to be involved in their curriculum. Students with the greatest exposure to the SCB were more aware of specific program initiatives and expressed increased interest in academic medicine as a career. By highlighting this innovative student engagement program, we aim to share best practices for a highly structured, value-added approach to medical student engagement in medical education that is applicable to other medical schools and student leaders.

The graduates of vocational pre-service teacher education are expected to possess appropriate pedagogical, theoretical and practical skills. As part of the academic curriculum, all students should do two kind of apprenticeship programs: an industrial training and a teaching practicum at school. These programs providing students with the exposure to a real working environment in the industry and vocational schools. Thorough this program, the industry and the school could assess the student teachers’ competences in their subject-related skills. Therefore, this study aims to identify feedback from the employers during the apprenticeship in order to determine their expectations toward the practical skills of vocational student teachers using Quality Function Deployment (QFD) approach. The employer’ feedbacks are then translated into technical requirements which specifying the actions required in teaching and learning process. The QFD help the education institution to identify the gaps in the curriculum based on the requirements from the school and industry.
