Research on attachment and condom use has been limited to correlational studies of self-report measures, yielding inconsistent results. Here, we examined the causal effects of attachment priming on self-reported condom use attitudes and an observational measure of condom acquisition behavior. In three experiments, participants were exposed to one of three attachment primes (security, anxiety, or avoidance) or a control prime. For Study 1, participants in the security and anxiety conditions preferred condom non-use to a greater extent, compared to participants in the avoidance condition. This effect was replicated in Study 2, and was mediated by perceptions of sexual health threat. In Study 3, the effect of security priming on condom acquisition behavior was eliminated through the use of a framing manipulation, though, the effect of primed attachment on condom use attitudes was not significant. A Meta-Analysis, however, revealed that the predicted effects of attachment priming were consistent across the three studies, supporting the role of attachment in evaluations of condom use. Priming attachment security or anxiety lead participants to perceive their sexual partners as less of a sexual health threat, resulting in a devaluation of condom use. Primed security also reduced condom acquisition behavior, though this negative effect eliminated by framing condoms as protecting a partner’s sexual health. Overall, these studies suggest that relational factors, such as attachment, require greater consideration when studying sexual health and designing interventions.

Abstract Reference/Citation: Broglio SP, Puetz TW. The effect of sport concussion on neurocognitive function, self-report symptoms, and postural control: a meta-analysis. Sports Med. 2008;38(1):53–67. Clinical Question: How effective are various concussion assessment techniques in detecting the effects of concussion on cognition, balance, and symptoms in athletes? Data Sources: Studies published between January 1970 and June 2006 were identified from the PubMed and PsycINFO databases. Search terms included concussion, mild traumatic brain injury, sport, athlete, football, soccer, hockey, boxing, cognition, cognitive impairment, symptoms, balance, and postural control. The authors also handsearched the reference list of retrieved articles and sought the opinions of experts in the field for additional studies. Study Selection: Studies were included if they were published in English; described a sample of athletes concussed during athletic participation; reported outcome measures of neurocognitive function, postural stability, or self-report symptoms; compared the postconcussion assessments with preseason (healthy) baseline scores or a control group; completed at least 1 postinjury assessment within the first 14 days after the concussion (to reflect neurometabolic recovery); and provided enough information for the authors to calculate effect sizes (means and SDs at baseline and postinjury time points). Selected studies were grouped according to their outcome measure (neurocognitive function, symptoms, or postural control) at initial and follow-up (if applicable) time points. Excluded articles included review articles, abstracts, case studies, editorials, articles without baseline data, and articles with data extending beyond the 14-day postinjury time frame. Data Extraction: From each study, the following information was extracted by one author and checked by the second author: participant demographics (sport, injury severity, incidence of loss of consciousness, and postconcussion assessment times), sample sizes, and baseline and postconcussion means and SDs for all groups. All effect sizes (the Hedge g) were computed so that decreases in neurocognitive function and postural control or increases in symptom reports resulted in negative effect sizes, demonstrating deficits in these domains after concussion. The authors also extracted the following moderators: study design (with or without control group), type of neurocognitive technique (Standardized Assessment of Concussion, computerized test, or pencil-and-paper test), postconcussion assessment time, and number of postconcussion assessments. Main Results: The search identified 3364 possible abstracts, which were then screened by the authors, with 89 articles being further reviewed for relevancy. Fifty articles were excluded because of insufficient data to calculate effect sizes, lack of a baseline assessment or control group, or because the data had been published in more than one study. The remaining 39 studies met all of the inclusion criteria and were used in the meta-analysis; 34 reported neurocognitive outcome measures, 14 provided self-report symptom outcomes, and 6 presented postural control as the dependent variable. The analyzed studies included 4145 total participants (concussed and control) with a mean age of 19.0 ± 0.4 years. The quality of each included study was also evaluated by each of the 2 authors independently using a previously published 15-item scale; the results demonstrated excellent agreement between the raters (intraclass correlation coefficient  =  0.91, 95% confidence interval [CI]  =  0.83, 0.95). The quality appraisal addressed randomization, sample selection, outcome measures, and statistical analysis, among other methodologic considerations. Quality scores of the included studies ranged from 5.25 to 9.00 (scored from 0–15). The initial assessment demonstrated a deficit in neurocognitive function (Z  =  7.73, P < .001, g  =  −0.81 [95% CI  =  −1.01, −0.60]), increase in self-report symptoms (Z  =  2.13, P  =  .03, g  =  −3.31 [95% CI  =  −6.35, −0.27]), and a nonsignificant decrease in postural control (Z  =  1.29, P  =  .19, g  =  −2.56 [95% CI  =  −6.44, 1.32]). For the follow-up assessment analyses, a decrease in cognitive function (Z  =  2.59, P  =  .001, g  =  −26 [95% CI  =  −0.46, −0.06]), an increase in self-report symptoms (Z  =  2.17, P  =  .03, g  =  −1.09 [95% CI  =  −2.07, −0.11]), and a nonsignificant decrease in postural control (Z  =  1.59, P  =  0.11, g  =  −1.16 [95% CI  =  −2.59, 0.27]) were found. Neurocognitive and symptom outcomes variables were reported in 10 studies, and the authors were able to compare changes from baseline in these measures during the initial assessment time point. A difference in effect sizes was noted (QB(1)  =  5.28, P  =  .02), with the increases in self-report symptoms being greater than the associated deficits in neurocognitive function. Conclusions: Sport-related concussion had a large negative effect on cognitive function during the initial assessment and a small negative effect during the first 14 days postinjury. The largest neurocognitive effects were found with the Standardized Assessment of Concussion during the immediate assessment and with pencil-and-paper neurocognitive tests at the follow-up assessment. Large negative effects were noted at both assessment points for postural control measures. Self-report symptoms demonstrated the greatest changes of all outcomes variables, with large negative effects noted both immediately after concussion and during the follow-up assessment. These findings reiterate the recommendations made to include neurocognitive measures, postural control tests, and symptom reports into a multifaceted concussion battery to best assess these injuries.

Abstract Background Ensuring young people experience good sexual health is a key public health concern. Yet, some vulnerable groups of young people are at higher risk of poor sexual health, and consequently require additional support to achieve good sexual health. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to identify and assess the evidence base for behavioural and psychosocial interventions to improve sexual health for young people with additional vulnerabilities.Methods We searched for randomised controlled trials of interventions aimed at promoting sexual health, with any non-pharmacological comparator (e.g., waitlist control). Key outcomes of interest were indicators of sexual health (e.g., condom use, attitudes to contraception, knowledge of risk). Participants in eligible trials were under 25 years old and in a high-risk group (alcohol and other drug use; justice-involved; homeless; LGBTQI+; mental ill-health; ethnic minority, or out-of-home care). The final literature searches were performed on 16 September 2020, on MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, CENTRAL, Web of Science, Scopus and clinical trial registries. Meta-analyses were conducted where possible.Results Forty-seven papers from 46 trials of the 5213 identified met inclusion criteria, with all but one of the included trials conducted in North America. Three focused predominantly on AOD, six on juvenile justice, two on homelessness, five on young men who have sex with men (YMSM), 26 on ethnic minorities, two on mental ill-health, three on out-of-home care, however no trials were identified in LGBTQI + groups outside of YMSM. The 47 included papers had a combined total of 21,543 participants. The vast majority (26/46) of trials were conducted with ethnic minority groups, with most of the interventions delivered as group therapy, and some involving parents and caregivers. Condom use was the most frequently reported outcome measure. In trials targeting ethnic minorities, the meta-analysis found a medium effect size (0.62, p = 0.0004) of the intervention on condom use.Conclusions There remains a dearth of research undertaken outside of North America, and in high-risk groups other than ethnic minorities. Future interventions should address sexual health more broadly than just the absence of negative biological outcomes with LGBTQI+, homeless and mental ill-health populations targeted for such work.This review was registered at Prospero (ref. 149810) and at osf.io/ukva9.

Introduction Telehealth interventions to advance adolescent sexual health have evolved and are being used to promote adolescent sexual health knowledge and healthy sexual behaviors. However, as this area of intervention modality expands, there is a need to pause and examine the effects of telehealth interventions on adolescent sexual health outcomes. Addressing this knowledge gap will inform researchers and practitioners on the current state of evidence of telehealth interventions and inform further intervention development and testing. This study aimed to explore the meta-effects of telehealth interventions on self-efficacy of using condoms, condom use practices, and sexually transmitted infection testing behaviors among adolescents. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials were conducted. Seven databases (Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, OVID (UpToDate), and Web of Science) were searched for relevant full-text articles from the inception to May 2021. The revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. A meta-analysis was performed using a random effects model to calculate the pooled effects of telehealth interventions for adolescents. Stata 16.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results A total of 15 studies ( N = 5499) that used telehealth interventions with adolescents were included in the analysis. Telehealth interventions were found to increase self-efficacy for condom use (standardized mean difference: 0.22; 95% confidence interval: 0.08–0.36), practice for condom use (standardized mean difference: 0.35; 95% confidence interval: 0.23–0.47), and being screened/tested for sexual transmitted infections (standardized mean difference: 0.61; 95% confidence interval: 0.31–0.92). Discussion Telehealth interventions show promise as effective intervention delivery solutions for improving self-efficacy and certain sexual health behaviors among adolescents. These telehealth strategies could be important alternatives to in-person visits to accessing sexual health information or services near where they live. Future research should consider testing telehealth strategies where there is evidence of impact to move the field forward.

Background Body hair removal is a behaviour that has become normative among women in Westernised cultures, and is presented by the media as the feminine ideal, despite being painful and a potential cause of infection. Of concern, removal may be part of a more global pattern of appearance dissatisfaction and risky sexual behaviour. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships among pubic hair removal, body image and sexual health indicators. Methods: Women (n = 264; Mage = 33.82, s.d. = 11.13, range = 18–66) completed self-report questionnaires assessing these constructs, including an assessment of body hair removal practices. Results: Greater appearance concerns (as measured by thin-ideal internalisation, appearance investment and self-objectification) and sexual health indicators (i.e. less condom use self-efficacy when a partner disapproves of condom use) all predicted greater importance of reasons for pubic hair removal (R2 = 0.315, F(8184) = 9.97, P < 0.001), controlling for age groups. Additionally, women who removed a greater amount of hair reported more thin-ideal internalisation and appearance investment than those who removed less hair. Conclusions: Women who express stronger reasoning for pubic hair removal, and remove a larger amount of it, may endorse problematic beliefs and behaviours particularly related to appearance concerns. It is important for practitioners to consider this practice as distinct from grooming and to be aware of its association with a broader array of risky beliefs and behaviours that can compromise women’s well-being.

The presented paper examines the deployment of a cost-effective biofeedback system that provides anxiety awareness during online examination activities. Human anxiety is classified by evaluating biosignals related to skin conductance, skin temperature, and heart rate. The first aim of this study is to check the presented system performance. Thus, we test the convergent validity of the system regarding self-report measures of anxiety. Moreover, the system is validated against a commercial tool of anxiety detection. Fifteen (15) postgraduate students took part in the relevant psychometric test. The convergent validity of the system is found to be satisfactory. The second aim of this study is to identify the participant’s personality dimensions according to Technology Readiness Index (TRI) which affects their academic performance and their real-time anxiety, as provided by the biofeedback device, during academic examinations. Thirty-five (35) postgraduate students, who were taking examinations in the form of synchronous online tests in the classroom for one of their lessons, took part in this stage of the research. The examined relationships are presented via a path model showing mainly that insecurity causes academic performance to decline, which in turn has a significant negative effect with increasing anxiety.

AbstractThe effects of platelet donation by apheresis on different parameters of the erythrogram are still unclear. The objective was to meta-analyze the effect of plateletpheresis on hematocrit, hemoglobin, and erythrocyte count, with a systematic review with random effects meta-analysis of the mean difference. The PRISMA guidelines were considered, as well as 133 search strategies on four different databases. Reproducibility was guaranteed and methodological quality was evaluated. Heterogeneity was evaluated with Galbraith and DerSimonian-Laird’s, publication bias with a funnel plot and a Begg’s test, sensitivity analysis and a cumulative meta-analysis were also conducted. Eighteen (18) articles were included, 17 evaluated the effects on hematocrit in 2,564 donors; 13 on hemoglobin in 1,640 donors; and 4 on red blood cell count in 243 donors. A decrease of 2.26% (CI95% = 2.11–2.41) was observed in hematocrit, of 0.80 g/dL (CI95% = 0.75–0.86) in hemoglobin and −0.21 × 1012/L (CI95% = −0.13; −0.29) in red blood cell count. Plateletpheresis has a negative effect on the erythrogram parameters, explained by blood loss in the kits used for the procedure and cell lysis. Such evidence is relevant to secure the efficiency and safety of the procedure, improve selection processes or determine the number of donations that can be performed without affecting donors’ health.

ObjectivesDepression and depressive symptoms are common mental disorders that have a considerable effect on patients’ health-related quality of life and satisfaction with medical care, but the prevalence of these conditions varies substantially between published studies. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide a precise estimate of the prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms among outpatients in different clinical specialties.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Data sources and eligibility criteriaThe PubMed and PsycINFO, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were searched to identify observational studies that contained information on the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms in outpatients. All studies included were published before January 2016. Data characteristics were extracted independently by two investigators. The point prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms was measured using validated self-report questionnaires or structured interviews. Assessments were pooled using a random-effects model. Differences in study-level characteristics were estimated by meta-regression analysis. Heterogeneity was assessed using standard χ2tests and the I2statistic. The study protocol has been registered with PROSPERO under number CRD42017054738.ResultsEighty-three cross-sectional studies involving 41 344 individuals were included in this study. The overall pooled prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms was 27.0% (10 943/41 344 individuals; 95% CI 24.0% to 29.0%), with significant heterogeneity between studies (p<0.0001, τ2=0.3742, I2=96.7%). Notably, a significantly higher prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms was observed in outpatients than in the healthy controls (OR 3.16, 95% CI 2.66 to 3.76, I2=72.0%, χ2=25.33). The highest depression/depressive symptom prevalence estimates occurred in studies of outpatients from otolaryngology clinics (53.0%), followed by dermatology clinics (39.0%) and neurology clinics (35.0%). Subgroup analyses showed that the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms in different specialties varied from 17.0% to 53.0%. The prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms was higher among outpatients in developing countries than in outpatients from developed countries. Moreover, the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms in outpatients slightly decreased from 1996 to 2010. Regarding screening instruments, the Beck Depression Inventory led to a higher estimate of the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms (1316/4702, 36.0%, 95% CI 29.0% to 44.0%, I2=94.8%) than the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (1003/2025, 22.0%, 95% CI 12.0% to 35.0%, I2=96.6%).ConclusionOur study provides evidence that a significant proportion of outpatients experience depression or depressive symptoms, highlighting the importance of developing effective management strategies for the early identification and treatment of these conditions among outpatients in clinical practice. The substantial heterogeneity between studies was not fully explained by the variables examined.
