Background: The COVID-19 pandemic created highly unpredictable circumstances which resulted in increased levels of psychological strain. Here we investigate pandemic-related alterations in emotion regulation in adolescents assessed before and during the pandemic. We also take biological age into account in the response to the pandemic. Methods: We compared baseline data on the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) total scores of a pre-pandemic adolescent cohort (n=241) with those obtained during the second wave of the pandemic (n=266). We estimated biological age based on an ultrasonic boneage assessment procedure in a subgroup of males. We included both grammar school and vocational school students in the 9th and 10th grades and analyzed their data independently.Findings: There is a gender difference in the timing of vulnerability for pandemic-related stress in grammar school students: females are affected a year earlier than males. Vocational school male students mature faster than grammar school male students, and the timing of emotional vulnerability also precedes that of the grammar school students.Discussion: We interpret our findings in a developmental model suggesting that there might be a window of highest vulnerability in adolescent emotion regulation. The timing of the window is determined by both chronological and biological age, and it seems to be different for females and males.Application to Practice: Defining the exact temporal windows of vulnerability for different adolescent cohorts allows for the timely integration of preventive actions into adolescent care to protect mental health during future chronic stressful situations.

Infant feeding decisions depend on breastfeeding attitudes. This study examined the high school and the vocational school students’ attitudes toward breastfeeding. The descriptive cross-section survey was applied. A stratified random sample of 1,319 male and female students was carried out. The results revealed that female students were more positive than male students in breastfeeding attitudes. Of the female students, 34.7% (n = 458) reported that they will plan to breastfeed, and 29% (n = 382) male students indicated that they will encourage breastfeeding. Moreover, two-thirds (60.7%, n = 801) of the participants favored the inclusion of breastfeeding information in the school curriculum. Findings from this study suggest that breastfeeding information needs to be addressed earlier among adolescent students to increase positive breastfeeding attitudes.

Flooding that occurred recently has become a very detrimental disaster for the victims. This flood disaster is still a concern for people in Indonesia. Flood mitigation needs to be done to all levels of society, especially vocational school students. Vocational school students must be responsive in any situation because, after graduation, they are ready to work. Disaster mitigation is essential to be included in learning at school. Disaster mitigation is also related to the Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) to always be ready and alert. In measuring vocational school students' understanding of disaster mitigation, initial research was carried out related to disaster mitigation and HOTS. The research subjects were 100 students of Vocational School in Jakarta who were randomly selected. This study used Google Forms as a data collection technique. The results showed that the students’ HOTS score was still low. The results showed that the Students’ HOTS scores on flooding were still low. The average score obtained by the whole students was 43.34. The male students obtained 30.27, and the female students obtained 45.97. All schools in Indonesia should implement early mitigation education that is integrated with HOTS learning.

Communication by means of new media inevitably leads to changes in language that are reflected in a new type of discourse. The main features of this discourse are the use of abbreviations, emoticons, dialecticism, anglicisms, neologisms, vulgarisms, and profanities. This way of writing, however, is often seen as writing with a lot of errors, which then have a negative influence on literacy in general and, particularly, on the literacy of young people. Therefore, during 2016, the authors of this article conducted a research study of the real literacy of young people analyzing school assignments written by students in their final years of vocational schools and their communication in new media. The 2016 research study was a follow-up study to the research study that had been carried out in 2015 with grammar school students. This new research study compared vocational school students with grammar school students in Croatia.

This study explored family function as a key factor of loneliness, hope, and emotion related to secondary vocational school students during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Chinese versions of the Olson Family Function Scale, Russell Loneliness Scale, Snyder Hope Scale, and Gross Emotion Regulation Scale were completed by 5,138 participants. Guardian type significantly predicted family function and loneliness. Family function significantly and positively correlated with loneliness. The relationship between family function and loneliness was mediated by hope, and expressive suppression concurrently moderated the relationship between hope and loneliness. Our study offers meaningful insights into the family function of Chinese secondary vocational school students. The findings supported a moderated mediation model that exemplifies the relationship between family function, loneliness, expressive suppression, and hope. Although the results showed that high hope mediated lower family functioning and loneliness, low expressive suppression led to intense loneliness immediately. This study confirms that emotional strategy is important and associated with mental health. It also suggests that schools should pay more attention to students' emotion regulation and help them rebuild hope or appropriate cognition to relieve loneliness during crisis events.

Two groups of adolescents ( N = 114), 61 identified-gifted adolescents ( M = 22, F = 39) and 51 vocational school adolescents ( M = 27, F = 26), were compared on the Overexcitability Questionnaire. Each of the five Overexcitability (OE) scores—Psychomotor, Sensual, Imaginational, Intellectual, and Emotional—was subjected to a two-way ANOVA by classification and gender. Any statistically significant interaction effect was further analyzed by testing the group means with six two-group comparison tests. The analyses produced the following results: (a) Differences among the Psychomotor, Sensual, and Emotional OE means were not statistically significant, and (b) the Imaginational and Intellectual OE means of the gifted male students were significantly higher than the means of the vocational female students, vocational male students, and gifted female students. The effect sizes were classified as large. A qualitative textual analysis was also conducted. The results were compared with another study of the same gifted population that used the Overexcitability Questionnaire-II.

The paper examines the possibility of a more efficient and effective education for a democratic, multicultural society from the perspective of psychological findings concerning personal democratic and antidemocratic predispositions. The starting premise of the research is a that there is a significant connection between the attitude to multiculturalism and acceptance of plurality of ideas. The research aimed to provide an answer to the question whether openness to other cultures is connected with a readiness to accept plurality of ideas. The research was carried out on a suitable sample (N=306) of multicultural groups of grammar school and secondary vocational school students in Subotica in 2005. The results point to a significant positive connection between attitudes to other cultures and acceptance of plurality of ideas (r=.43; p< .01). The school type also affects the degree of acceptance of plurality of ideas. The author concludes that the findings offer support for an integrative approach to education for democracy, while practice in accepting plurality of ideas through different subjects represents a necessary condition for the acceptance of democratic behavior and thinking. This is how the education for democracy can be made more efficient and effective and integration of young people into democratic and multicultural society facilitated. .

PIK-R (Pusat Informasi Konseling Remaja) as one of the programs for adolescents is expected to be able to contribute positively in developing positive behavior and suppress the potential for negative adolescent behavior. This study aims to analyze the positive and negative behavior of high/vocational school students and their relation to knowledge, participation, and effectiveness of the PIK-R program at school. This study used a cross sectional study design involving 687 students in selected public and private high/vocational schools in Bekasi City, Indonesia. Structured questionnaire is used to measure the students’ characteristics, the students’ negative behavior, and the effectiveness of the PIK-R program. The study found that only 54.88% of students were aware of the PIK-R program and only 8.11% attended the program. Even so, the results of different tests show that students who take part in the PIK-R program show significantly lower negative behaviors, especially in pornography, online games, and smoking addiction. In addition, it was also found that male students tended to have higher negative behavior than female students. The results of multiple linear regression also show the real effect of the PIK-R program in suppressing the negative behaviors of adolescents.
