Learners’ Self-assessment is a supportive and learner facilitating task, as a genuine part of the learner-centered approach, and Task-Based Teaching. It highlights the importance of giving freedom to the learners and is impactful on learner performance. This study aimed at exploring the advantages of Learners' Self-Assessment Tasks (LSATs) by B.A. English-major students, University of Bisha. The data collected through a questionnaire and informal interviews with the students who experienced LSATs during their classes. The study indicated that LSATs create awareness and dynamic progress in enhancing the students' learning process. In the data procured, around 75% of participants found LSATs helpful for improving their English skills. It strengthens the factors related to a learner's skills, motivation, and engagement in the development of learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Learners were also able to achieve and receive constructive and indirect feedback. The results showed that LSATs fosters the students' autonomy in learning ESL. Few significant shortcomings of LSATs highlight that quite a few students' were hesitant to get involved and engage themselves in specific self-assessment tasks and activities; lack of the desired proficiency in ESL is and could be one of the few important reasons. Productive and successful self-assessment tasks can be aimed at following requisite guidelines, which this study shows and explores. For instance, teachers need to design LSATs well-tailored to the student proficiency and level of knowledge. The study concludes by giving suggestions and recommendations for further studies in this domain.

<p>'Chatbot' programs are pieces of software that can hold a conversation, or interact, in English. This paper explores the potential of chatbots for ESL (English as a Second Language) learning from a pedagogical perspective. From the command-line days of Eliza, chatbots have matured considerably – to the point where many chatbots now involve an avatar interface, with speech recognition also becoming available as a feature. The paper evaluates six chatbots currently available either online or for purchase. The evaluation examines chatbots from the perspective of their interfaces as a human-looking or sounding partner to chat with, as well as their usability as pieces of software suitable for ESL learners. To put some of these issues in perspective and provide insights into their use, the paper also reports on the use of some chatbots in<br />the ESL classroom. The paper concludes with an analysis of chatbots currently available, noting that while chatbots have matured considerably since the early days of Eliza, they still have a long way to go before they can interact with students in the way that researchers such as Atwell (1999) envisage.</p>

Throughout the years, a lot of research has been looking at the significance of effective atmosphere in second language classrooms. We often overlook the fact that humour is a vital element in attaining a supportive learning environment that can benefit students. There is limited research conducted on the effectiveness of the use of humour in ESL classroom, especially in the context of motivating the students to learn, in which the students are used as the indicator and method in gaining insights as they are the ones who experienced the learning process. Thus, this study was conducted to look at students’ views towards the effects of humour on their intrinsic motivation to learn English. A survey was conducted using questionnaires adapted from Deci & Ryan’s (2003) Intrinsic Motivation Inventory Test (IMI) on 70 students of various programmes from the Faculty of Education, UiTM. The acquired data were then compared based on each of the programmes in the Faculty of Education, UiTM. The findings from this study revealed that majority of the respondents strongly agree that humour has positive effects on students’ intrinsic motivation in learning English. The positive responses received from the respondents indicate that humour is indeed an effective teaching tool in promoting intrinsic motivation in learning the second language. Fossilization became a hot topic following Selinker's (1984) prediction that 95% of second language students would never gain native-like control of the chosen language. Although the exact causes are unknown, numerous experts have suggested that a lack of drive could be one of them. This study aims to know the role of motivation to overcome fossilization at SMAN 2 Tapung. The researcher believes that motivation has a big role to overcome fossilization in learning English as a foreign language. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by using an open-ended questionnaire. Meanwhile, there are two participants in this research. The result showed that, students still have some difficulties in learning English and motivation also has a big role to overcome fossilization.

The paper focused on the research of talent cultivation for English major in the universities of China, especially in private universities. It is often criticized that the English major makes no difference from public English or English training. The main problems of English major at present in China Universities are in its personnel cultivating program, and course design. These problems are shown in the paper mainly by case studies, literature research from the authors’ teaching experience. To solve these problems, the traditional English major must make some tentative innovation and improvement. For the personnel cultivating, it must make a balance between specialists and generalists. For the major setup, it should make refinement in different fields and aspects to let the students make a choice according to their own interests and characteristics, so the paper proposed the mechanism of general enrollment and stratified cultivating. For the course design, it is necessary to make a change from “learning English” to “learning in English”. Learning English mainly lies with students. The learning process, especially the skill-based learning, mainly lies in the learners themselves, while the task of the teacher plays the role of mentor and supervisor. Learning in English is the main direction of English teachers’ efforts. It is the main mission of the teachers of English major to teach humanities courses in full English, cultivate students’ critical thinking in teaching, and let students actively participate in classroom interaction. With these changes, the English major can strive to achieve its own development by being unique and new.
