News media have shape-shifted over the last decades, with rising online news suppliers and an increase in online news consumption. We examine how reporting on immigration differs between popular German online and print media over three crucial years of the so-called immigration crisis, from 2015 to 2017. We extend knowledge on framing of the crisis by examining a period covering start, peak and the time after the intake of refugees. Moreover, we establish whether online and print reporting differs in terms of both frame occurrence and variability. Crises generally create an opening for the formation of new perspectives and frames. These conditions provide an ideal test to see whether the focus of media reporting differs between online and print sources. We extract the dominant frames in almost 18,500 articles using machine-learning methods. While results indicate that many frames are, on average, more visible in either online or print media, these differences do not appear to follow a systematic logic. Regarding diversity of frame usage, we find that online media are, on average, more dominated by particular frames compared to print and that frame diversity is largely independent of important key events happening during our period of investigation.

We examine how reporting on immigration differs between popular German online and print media over three crucial years of the so-called immigration crisis from 2015 to 2017. This study extends knowledge on the framing of the crisis by examining a period covering the start, peak, and time after the intake of refugees. Moreover, we establish whether online and print reporting differs in terms of both frame occurrence and variability. The period of the crisis provided an ideal test to see whether the focus of media reporting differed between online and print sources. Employing a most- similar- cases design based on (autonomous) online and print versions of three major German news outlets, we extract the dominant frames in almost 18,500 articles using algorithm-based topic modelling. While results indicate that many frames are more visible in either online or print media, these differences often do not follow theoretical expectations. Furthermore, online media are dominated by particular frames and, hence, show less diversity than print media. However, important key events happening during our period of investigation do not affect overall diversity of frames.

Abstract-Competitive behavior is also a major factor in the competitive media industry is now getting very tight. This is caused by the print media competition with online or Internet-based media in getting news and advertising to attract participants from readers. This research method uses historical depth case study intended to produce an institutional explanation of the characteristics of the typical behavior shown by principal component analysis. The study also incorporates the classical approach to the historical focus on qualitative interpretation of data, In order to survive, the print media should be able to maintain the credibility and public trust on the information presented is now more attractive and more accurate. The print media began to be threatened because of the rapid development of emerging online media via internet access has encouraged people to seek to access online media simply and easily via mobile phones or gadgets. Connoisseurs of the print media loyal readers will turn to online news media. Reality has happened would threaten the print media industry, but the print media already have the characteristics of the first, namely: the news that is always clear, complete and detailed, online media faster and more cangih to broadcast news and always up to date but the online news can only be enjoyed by using the tool cangih not all communities have the tools and not all people can use technology cangih to always follow the news online.

Aturan mengenai pers di Indonesia diatur oleh Undang-undang No.40 tahun 1999 tentang pers. Segala bentuk aktivitas jurnalisme, baik yang menggunakan media cetak, media penyiaran, dan media baru dilindungi dan dijamin oleh Undang-undang Pers. Pada perkembangannya, praktik jurnalistik pada media online tidak sesederhana formulasi pada undang-undang Pers. Ruang lingkup media baru yang menghadirkan sedemikian banyak kebaruan menghadirkan persoalan dilematis karena karakter media yang berbeda. Karakter media yang berbeda membuat aktivitas jurnalistik pada media baru juga mengalami pergeseran dan dinamika yang luar biasa. Hal ini pula yang kemudian menghadirkan persoalan dilematis di wilayah normatif dan etis. Berangkat dari asumsi tersebut, penelitian ini bermaksud ingin melihat bagaimana posisi Undang-undang Pers dalam ekosistem media baru. Penelitian ini berusaha menjawab posisi tersebut dalam dua aras. Pertama, penelitian ini hendak mengelaborasi bagaimana posisi Undang-undang Pers dalam konteks hukum media di Indonesia, baik dalam perspektif lex spesialis maupun perspektif lex generalis. Kedua, posisi Undang-undang Pers dalam penelitian ini dilihat dalam konteks empirik pada berbagai kasus jurnalisme media online di Indonesia. Konteks empirik ini lebih melihat pada bagaimana fakta yang terjadi di wilayah hukum dalam menanggapi berbagai persoalan terkait pers di media online.  Indonesian Law No. 40 in 1999 on Press regulate Indonesia press activity in print media, electronic media, and online media. This law not only regulate press activity in collecting and reporting information but also guarantee freedom of the press in all Indonesian platform media. However, online journalism practice not as simple as the law. New media ecosystem challenge journalism practice, ethics, and regulation to the new level. New media character change journalism in many aspect, such as commentary, accuracy, and media management. These changes brought new perspective to discuss about regulation for online journalism. This research want to answer, how Indonesian Press Law taking position in new media ecosystem. First, we can discuss this position by elaborate Indonesian Press Law in lex specialist or in lec generalis condition. Second, we can compare Indonesian online journalism case which use Indonesian Press Law to justice.

An investigative reporting has changed quite rapidly in the last few periods after the development of information technology. The presence of online media encourages the emergence of online journalism. The existence of online journalism, within the framework of online media, gives a certain touch to investigative reporting activities. Investigative reporting developed in online media has managerial uniqueness and certain coverage patterns. The purpose of this study is to illustrate how the management of editorials and online media coverage patterns in Indonesia conducting investigative coverage.Data for this research is obtained through interviews with data analysis using a qualitative approach and a case study method of single case-multilevel analysis. Research subjects (journalism) and research objects (online investigative news) of this study are Detik.com and Tirto.id.The results of the study show that investigative data are at the core of investigative reporting in online media. It can be in the form of direct observation under investigation (disguising) or the disclosure of new facts that have not been revealed before. The online news media in Indonesia, although it relies on the speed, also still takes into account the accuracy and rules of journalism, especially in the coverage of investigations. The online media strategy in reporting investigations is to divide investigative data into several news stories with one theme, but each headline is different according to the investigative reporting to be reported in parts.

General Election 2014 in Indonesia principally was a gate to more democratic Indonesia. People were given rights to directly vote their preferred legislative representatives and president and vice president for the next five-year period. New political learning process was introduced as all presidential candidates must show their capabilities in all aspects to attract constituents. The role of mass media became important as each candidate worked hard to gain sympathy from people. This paper examines how Indonesian online news media critically reported the presidential candidates. Further, this paper analysed how the issue were represented in the online media and why it was represented in such ways.

Abstract We present a collection of mathematical tools and emphasise a fundamental representation of analytic functions. Connecting these concepts leads to a framework for `exact learning', where an unknown numeric distribution could in principle be assigned an exact mathematical description. This is a new perspective on machine learning with potential applications in all domains of the mathematical sciences and the generalised representations presented here have not yet been widely considered in the context of machine learning and data analysis. The moments of a multivariate function or distribution are extracted using a Mellin transform and the generalised form of the coefficients is trained assuming a highly generalised Mellin-Barnes integral representation. The functions use many fewer parameters than contemporary machine learning methods and any implementation that connects these concepts successfully will likely carry across to non-exact problems and provide approximate solutions. We compare the equations for the exact learning method with those for a neural network which leads to a new perspective on understanding what a neural network may be learning and how to interpret the parameters of those networks.

Abstract   In the current technological and competitive world, individuals are provided with a broad range of digital as well as traditional channels. Presently, online news sites are providing high satisfaction to the readers, and this scenario has simultaneously caused a decline in the circulation of print newspapers. Given this, the present study aimed to identify the choice of consumers in online and print media regarding the format preference and also examined whether there is any difference in the demographic characteristics in the choice of consumer. This study adopted the quantitative method and primary data collection approach where paper-based survey was conducted among 102 journalists. Furthermore, this study analysed the influence of involved variables (print and online media) and also examined the relationship between format preference and demographic characteristics between the two media. This study would further shed light on the two important input classifications such as exploratory and descriptive research. The findings of the study are provided in tabular formats after carrying out the qualitative data collection such as the focus group interview and the elite and specialised interview. The hypotheses for the study were developed based on the literature review and were tested using the chi-squared test. The study’s findings showed that there is no association between personal attributes and media type. Majority of them reported that irrespective of education, gender, income, age and nationality, they prefer online media, especially the internet, as their basic resource. However, few old-age consumers prefer print media, especially newspapers. Moreover, this study concludes that there is no statistical significant association between media type preference and the reasons. This is due to the fact that, based on media type, there is a lack of difference in the reason choices provided by the consumers. This study empirically concludes that print media is significantly influenced by online media. Several features that create an impact on print media include profitability, market share, subscription, advertising revenue, demand and print revenue.   Keywords: Web content, new business models, profitability, market share.

Abstract Background Based on previous experience there is justifiable concern about suicidal behaviour and news media reporting of it during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This study used a systematic search of online news media reports (versions of newspapers, magazine and other digital publications) of suicidal behaviour during India’s COVID-19 lockdown and compared it to corresponding dates in 2019. Data was gathered using a uniform search strategy from 56 online news media publications 24 March to 3 May for the years 2019 and 2020 using keywords, suicide, attempted suicide, hangs self and kills self. Demographic variables and methods used for suicide were compared for suicide and attempts between the 2 years using chi-squared tests (χ2). Results There were online news media reports of 369 cases of suicides and attempted suicides during COVID lockdown vs 220 reports in 2019, a 67.7% increase in online news media reports of suicidal behaviour. Compared to 2019, suicides reported during lockdown were significantly older (30 vs 50 years, p < 0.05), men (71.2% vs 58.7%; p < 0.01), married (77.7% vs 49%; p < 0.01) and employed (82.9% vs 59.5%; p < 0.01). During the lockdown, significantly more suicides were by hanging (64.4% vs 42%), while poisoning (8.5% vs 21.5%) and jumping in front of a train (2% vs 9.4%) (p < 0.05) were significantly reduced. Comparison of COVID and non-COVID groups showed that online news media reports of COVID cases of suicide and attempted suicide were significantly more likely to be men (84.7% vs 60.4%; p < 0.01), older (31–50 years 52.9% vs 25.8%; p < 0.01) employed (91.5% vs 64.3%; p < 0.01), had poor mental (40.1% vs 20.8%; p < 0.01) and poor physical health (24.8% vs 7.9%;11.8, p < 0.01). Conclusion Increase in online news media reports of suicides and attempts during COVID-19 lockdown may indicate an increase in journalists’ awareness about suicide or more sensational media reporting or may be a proxy indicator of a real community increase in suicidal behaviour. It is difficult to attribute changes in demographic profile and methods used only to changes in journalists’ reporting behaviour and should be further explored. We therefore call upon the Government of India to urgently release national suicide data to help devise a comprehensive suicide prevention strategy to address COVID-19 suicidal behaviour.

Background: This study focuses on the representation of Syrian refugees in Canadian online news media. It examines 375 articles selected from three of the most visited Canadian news sites, namely the Toronto Star, which favours the Liberal Party, and the Toronto Sun and National Post, which favour the Conservative Party. Analysis: The basis of this research is a topoi analysis, whereby instances of the topos of burdening are identified, examined, and categorized as either positive or negative. Conclusion and implications: A distinction is drawn between the depiction of Syrian refugees in conservative- and liberal-leaning news sources. The findings aim to provide some insight into the possible impact of media representation on both the Syrian refugees and the Canadian public. Contexte: Cette étude porte sur la représentation des réfugiés syriens dans les médias d’information canadiens en ligne. Elle examine 375 articles choisis à partir de trois des sites de nouvelles canadiens les plus visités, à savoir le Toronto Star, partisan du Parti libéral, le Toronto Sun et le National Post, partisans du Parti conservateur. Analyse: Cette recherche se fonde sur l’analyse de topoï pour identifier, examiner et catégoriser des topos sur les fardeaux comme étant positif ou négatifs. Conclusion et implications: Cette étude établit une distinction entre la manière dont les sources de nouvelles à tendance conservatrice dépeignent les réfugiés syriens et la manière dont les sources à tendance libérale le font. L’objectif est de mieux comprendre l’impact possible des représentations médiatiques sur les réfugiés syriens ainsi que sur le public canadien.
