User experience and design, law, and philosophy have discussed the fate of individuals’ web and social medial presence after death for some time. This residual, postmortem presence is our digital estate. As the theoretical implications of digital estates continue to gain attention, librarians and information professionals of all kinds will engage practical questions about this topic from survivors. This chapter has three functional purposes. First, to situate the digital estate within the current cultural experience of death and mourning in the United States; second, to offer introductory guidance for information professionals to proactively engage community members on this topic before one’s own death; and third, to assist information professionals as bereaved patrons try to make meaning from the digital estate of the deceased.

ABSTRACT   The literature suggests that nonprofit organizations provide civic benefits by promoting engagement within local communities. However, there exists minimal empirical evidence describing the ways in which nonprofits actually undertake this role. In order to address this omission, we conducted interviews with personnel of nonprofit organizations in one rural community in the United States. Our preliminary findings indicate that nonprofit organizations promote civic engagement through programs and activities that: 1) engage volunteers and donors; 2) bring community members together; 3) collaborate with organizations within and beyond the community; and 4) promote community education and awareness. Together, these findings help to develop a working model to understand the civic footprint of nonprofit organizations with methodological implications for future research that would seek to measure the extent to which nonprofits promote civic engagement. Il est normal de supposer que les associations à but non lucratif favorisent l’engagement du citoyen dans les communautés locales. Cependant, il existe peu de données empiriques sur la manière dont ces associations assument véritablement ce rôle. Pour combler ce manque, nous avons mené des entretiens semi-directifs approfondis auprès du personnel d’associations à but non lucratif dans une petite communauté rurale aux États-Unis. Nos résultats préliminaires indiquent que ces associations motivent les citoyens à s’impliquer quand elles offrent des programmes et des activités qui : 1) intéressent les bénévoles et les donateurs; 2) rassemblent directement ou indirectement les membres de la communauté; 3) collaborent avec d’autres associations tant au sein de la communauté qu’au-delà de celle-ci; et 4) encouragent l’éducation et la conscientisation communautaires. Ces constats aident à établir un modèle pour mieux comprendre la présence civique des associations à but non lucratif dans les communautés et indiquent une piste à suivre pour des recherches futures qui examineraient l’influence de ces associations sur le niveau de participation civique.

The Positive Deviance (PD) approach believes that in every community there exist individuals or groups, who without any extra resources, practice uncommon behaviors that offer better solutions to addressing problems in a community. PD is a community-driven change approach that encourages community members to discover their own assets, strengths, and wisdom to solve a local problem. The purpose of this activity report is to describe the lessons we learned about PD during a visit with pioneering global researchers and practitioners of positive deviance in the United States in September, 2018. Our key learning included: discovering “uncommon” behaviors which are already practiced by community members, and are thus actionable and more acceptable to community members; investigating positive deviants at many levels i.e., among health providers, community leaders, and the ordinary population; and the importance of designing, from the very beginning, a project that invites and engages all community members who through ownership can sustain impact.

According to a survey conducted by the CDC, it is estimated that 26% of Americans are living with a disability. Of those with disabilities in the United States, it is estimated that 33 million play video games. People with disabilities face many barriers in gaming, which is likely to impact game satisfaction. Measuring game satisfaction among this population can be problematic if the scale is not adapted to their needs, which can vary significantly based on the disability. To understand how best to assess game satisfaction among these populations, we discuss the issues people with cognitive, sensory, and/or motor disabilities may face when completing assessment scales and then use the validated Game User Experience Satisfaction Scale (GUESS) as a framework for understanding the game design issues that may impact satisfaction.

Between January 1, 2012 and January 30, 2018 alone there were 27 school shooting incidents, accounting for 62 victim deaths, 108 victims injured, countless witness and community members affected, and 10 assailants who committed suicide or were killed by a police officer during the attack, at schools or campuses across the United States (U.S.). Clearly, further intervention and prevention strategies are necessary for school personnel and law enforcement, as well as our greater communities, in reducing instances of school violence. Identification of individuals and groups who are at higher risk for violence toward self or others is one essential step in prevention. When prevention is unsuccessful, a student may begin down a path toward violence, eventually posing a threat to the extent that identifying and intervening becomes necessary. Encouraging law enforcement and school personnel to become well-versed in both, so that they might successfully support each other's efforts and develop common goals, is essential to successful communication regarding students and groups of concern.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 dominated and augmented many aspects of life beginning in early 2020. Related research and data generation developed alongside its spread. We developed a Bayesian spatio-temporal Poisson disease mapping model for estimating real-time characteristics of the coronavirus disease in the United States. We also created several dashboards for visualization of the statistical model for fellow researchers and simpler spatial and temporal representations of the disease for consumption by community members in our region. Findings suggest that the risk of confirmed cases is higher for health regions under partial stay at home orders and lower in health regions under full stay at home orders, when compared to before stay at home orders were declared. These results confirm the benefit of state-issued stay at home orders as well as suggest compliance to the directives towards the older population for adhering to social distancing guidelines.

BACKGROUND People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have faced unique challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research from the first two months of the pandemic suggested that between 7% and 37% of people with OCD experienced worsening in their OCD symptoms since the pandemic began, while the rest experienced either no change or an improvement in their symptoms. However, as society-level factors relating to the pandemic have evolved, the pandemic’s impacts on people with OCD have likely changed as well, in complex and population-specific ways. Therefore, this work contributes to a growing body of knowledge on the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on people, and demonstrates how differences across studies might emerge when studying specific populations and at specific timepoints. OBJECTIVE Our study aimed to learn how members of online OCD peer support communities felt the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted their OCD symptoms, 3-4 months after the pandemic began. METHODS We recruited participants from online OCD peer support communities for our brief survey. Participants indicated how much they felt their OCD symptoms had changed since the pandemic began, and how much they felt that having OCD was making it harder to deal with the pandemic. RESULTS 196 people responded to our survey, although some participants skipped some questions. Among non-missing data, 65.9% (108/164) of respondents were from the United States and 90.5% (152/168) had been subjected to a stay-at-home order. 92.9% (182/196) of respondents said they experienced worsening of their OCD symptoms since the pandemic began, although the extent to which symptoms worsened differed across dimensions of OCD, with symmetry and completeness symptoms less likely than others to have worsened. 95.5% (171/179) of respondents felt that having OCD made it harder to deal with the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Our study of online OCD peer support community members found a considerably higher rate of OCD symptom worsening than did other studies of people with OCD during the pandemic. Factors such as quarantine length, location, overlapping society-level challenges, and differing measurement and sampling choices may help to explain this difference across studies.

In this article, we analyze the Professional Development Program for English Language Teachers in the United States (PDPI), from the perspective of its graduates. The PDPI is a program developed by Capes in partnership with the United States Embassy and the Fulbright Commission, for the provision of intensive courses at American universities for English language teachers in Brazilian public schools. To identify the results and the possible repercussions of the program on the performance and the professional development of the participating teachers, a questionnaire was sent to the graduates of the courses taken in the USA, one year after their return to Brazil.The questionnaires were applied from Google Forms and the data tabulated and analyzed using the Microsoft Excel tool, with the construction of dynamic tables. Teachers' responses to the questionnaire were analyzedconsidering the objectives listed in the program selection notice. For this, an indicator was created for each of the five objectives: valuing teachers, mastering skills, sharing methodologies, cultural experience in loco, and established partnerships. The results showed that the objectives of the program were partially achieved with regard to the valorization of teachers, the ability to contextualize the cultural experience in the USA in language teaching, the establishment of partnerships, and the sharing and socialization of knowledge after the return to Brazil. On the other hand, the program has shown to have contributed significantly to the increase in the mastery of language skills and to the improvement of teaching and assessment practices in the classroom, according to the participating teachers.
