This article views behind the success of the Finnish basic education in the PISA assessments in the years 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2009. Success is here defined not only as excellent learning outcomes in reading literacy, mathematics and science, but also as a high level of educational equity and equality. The achieved outcomes are attributable to several factors, of which this article addresses especially the basic education reform of 1972-1977 and the university based teacher education leading to a master’s degree. Additional attention is paid to the autonomy of the municipalities (counties), schools and teachers in building and implementing the curricula, on the respect for learning and teachers in the Finnish society, and on the role of the Finnish evaluation system in supporting the student’s learning. Developing education is a long range effort continuing across election terms, as education is understood to be a cornerstone for the development of the society. This fact justifies our describing some of the Finnish national background bases for the comprehensive basic education system, where all students study in the same group.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jer.v4i1.9619 Journal of Education and Research, March 2014, Vol. 4, No. 1, pp. 1-18

Quality learning processes involve many things, one of which is the method or model applied by the teacher. If a teacher conveys varied and stimulating learning, students will be more interested in listening to the material presented. Conversely, if the teacher only teaches with conventional methods, namely lectures, students will be bored and not interested in listening to the material being taught. In this case the role of the learning method is very important to increase students' learning motivation, especially in the XI IPA class students.Assulaimaniyah whose application of learning is still a conventional method. They need varied learning not monotonous in order to support maximum learning outcomes, as well as the Application of SAVI Learning Methods to Increase Learning Motivation Sisawa Class XI Science MA.Assulaimaniyah Mojoagung Jombang. Based on this background, this study aims to conduct and determine the application of SAVI learning methods to improve student learning motivation when applied in the XI IPA MA class. Assulaimaniyah. Type of qualitative research with methods of collecting data on observation, interviews, documentation and library data. Data Analysis Techniques Data collection as well as data reduction, data presentation, verification and conclusions. The results showed that when the application of the SAVI method was applied, students who were previously lacking in enthusiasm in receiving learning were more enthusiastic and active in participating in these varied learning methods, so students could learn more optimally in learning. Supporting factors, positive support and encouragement from homeroom teacher and researcher motivation. Inhibiting factors Factors of oneself, such as lack of enthusiasm and enthusiasm that arise from themselves

Students participating in mobility experiences have a great learning opportunity, but in many cases they hardly realise about the soft-competences they developed during mobility. In this context, the supporting role of universities is key for students to make the most of their mobility and be able to communicate their learning outcomes. This study analyses the support services that students receive for the development and acknolwledgement of mobility soft comptencies (related with the three dimensiones: knowledge, skills and attitudes or KSAs) in order to define the university strategy in this field. Results show two types of support for outgoing and incoming students: (i) passive initiatives based on delivering relevant information for the mobility period to students; and (ii) active initiatives based on training activities and activities for student integration in the host university/city/culture. No support initiatives on mobility related KSAs for returned students or academic staff have been identified.

Abstract In this paper we aim to contribute to the debate over accountability and assessment of higher education (HE) by introducing the Japanese system. We first discuss the circumstances and issues surrounding Japanese HE and then examine the historical development of the quality assurance and evaluation system. Since the 1990s, with the implementation of policies that focused on liberalization, deregulation and increased institutional autonomy, the role of the government has shifted from setting strict regulations and quality standards to organizing an evaluation system for assessing the learning outcomes and improving accountability of the HE institutions. Finally, we suggest how Japan may take hints from Brazil in organizing an evaluation system on a national level that can more efficiently support and assess HE institutions

For nearly six decades there have been almost continuous efforts to reform mathematical instruction. A comprehensive account of these efforts will serve to bring out a number of significant facts.1 For example, from the very beginning this movement has had an international character. Moreover, in the world's leading countries it was sponsored by outstanding mathematicians and scientists. That is, the original impetus toward mathematical reform came from distinguished scholars connected with higher institutons of learning. And the issues which engaged their attention are as vital today as they were at the turn of the century. Among them may be mentioned the development of a continuous program extending from the kindergarten to the university; a persistent emphasis on such central themes as functional thinking or the study of relationships; the elimination of “inert ideas” and useless details; a genuine acquaintance with certain key concepts and methods of modern mathematics; a closer correlation of mathematics and science; the abandonment of purely mechanical drill in favor of real understanding and purposeful application; and, above all, a keen appreciation of the role of mathematics in the modern world.

In comparison to international perspectives, the specific role of the school psychologist in Hong Kong will provide a case study of the tensions experienced by a system in transition between a very traditional, highly segregated education system, to one that is actively promoting a whole school approach to inclusion. Consideration will initially be given to the development of inclusive education and the identification of quality learning outcomes for students. The role of the school psychologists in Hong Kong and the challenges they face will be compared to other international jurisdictions, focusing on both internal and external influences that have impacted on their role in recent years.

ABSTRACT Twenty-two Klebsiella pneumoniae and two K. oxytoca extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates were collected in 1996 from patients in two pediatric wards of the University Hospital in Wrocław, Poland. Molecular typing has revealed that the K. pneumoniae isolates represented four different epidemic strains. Three kinds of enzymes with ESBL activity (pI values of 5.7, 6.0, and 8.2) were identified. The pI 6.0 β-lactamases belonged to the TEM family, and sequencing of thebla TEM genes amplified from representative isolates revealed that these enzymes were TEM-47, previously identified in K. pneumoniae isolates from pediatric hospitals in Łódź and Warsaw. One of the TEM-47-producing strains from Wrocław was very closely related to the isolates from the other cities, and this indicated countrywide spread of the epidemic strain. The pI 5.7 β-lactamase was produced by a single K. pneumoniae isolate for which, apart from oxyimino-β-lactams, the MICs of β-lactam–inhibitor combinations were also remarkably high. Sequencing revealed that this was a novel TEM β-lactamase variant, TEM-68, specified by the following combination of mutations: Gly238Ser, Glu240Lys, Thr265Met, and Arg275Leu. The new enzyme has most probably evolved from TEM-47 by acquiring the single substitution of Arg275, which before was identified only twice in enzymes with inhibitor resistance (IR) activity. TEM-68 was shown to be a novel complex mutant TEM β-lactamase (CMT-2) which combines strong ESBL activity with relatively weak IR activity and, when expressed inK. pneumoniae, is able to confer high-level resistance to a wide variety of β-lactams, including inhibitor combinations. This data confirms the role of the Arg275Leu mutation in determining IR activity and documents the first isolation of K. pneumoniae producing the complex mutant enzyme.
