This paper serves as an introduction to the special section on Global Culture Revisited which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the publication of the 1990 Global Culture special issue. It examines the development of interest in the various strands of globalization and the question of whether there can be a global culture. The paper discusses the emergence of alternative global histories and the problematization of global knowledge. It examines the view that the current Covid-19 pandemic signals a turning point, or change of epoch, that marks the end of peak globalization (Gray, Mignolo). The paper also discusses the view that global was always a limited cartographic term which failed to adequately grasp our terrestrial location on the earth (Latour). Currently, there is considerable speculation about the emergent politics of a new world order, with civilizational states set alongside nation-states, opening up an epoch of greater pluriversality, and at the same time greater uncertainty.

We are now living in an era of multimedia data. The past decades have witnessed an unprecedented upsurge in “big data” in China. Mobile multimedia devices are becoming mainstream, promoting the conversion of big data technologies into practices. The deployment of big data provides people with great opportunities to deal with what were formerly great challenges. Against this background, research is ongoing to explore further possibilities in mobile multimedia developing. Mobile Multimedia Big Data Embedded Systems are transforming science, engineering, healthcare, medicine, finance, business, and ultimately our society itself. This special issue focuses on the state-of-the-art initiatives and the great promise in this field. We thank all of the authors who submitted papers for this special section. We are also highly appreciative of the reviewers who provided valuable review feedback on the submissions. The editor hopes that this special issue will attract researchers’ interest and contribute to further developments in this field.

This special issue of Acta IMEKO is the second issue, which presents the research highlights of the biannual Asia-Pacific Symposium on Measurement of Mass, Force and Torque (APMF). The purpose of the symposium is to offer researchers and scientists the opportunities of exchanging the latest scientific information and mise en pratique in the field of Mass, Force and Torque.

The recent APMF was organized by National Institute of Metrology (Thailand) in November 2017 in Krabi, Thailand, around the theme “Metrology Moving Towards Foundation”. The fields of the discussions and presentations were extended to cover the area of mass, force, torque, density, hardness, pressure, vacuum and gravimetry. The International Program Committee of APMF 2017 considered and selected 10 potential papers to be published as the enhanced versions in Acta IMEKO journal. With the journal’s standards of the review process by the expert referees, 6 articles were accepted for this special issue. The state of the art and recent research works developed to improve the accuracy and quality of the measurements in the aforesaid fields are presented in this issue.
