POTASSIUM RATES FOR SWEET SORGHUM CULTIVATED FOR ETHANOL PRODUCTION ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of K rates on morphological, productive and qualitative attributes of sweet sorghum cultivated for ethanol production. The experiment was conducted in field conditions in a cerrado soil with 0.6 mmolc dm-3 of K. The randomized block design with five treatments (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1 of K2O) and four replicate was adopted. The following variables were evaluated: stem diameter, plant height, leaf and juice K content, stem and juice yield, and total sugar concentration in the juice. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and polynomial regression. The K supply linearly increased stem diameter and increased plant height up to the 152 kg ha-1 of K2O rate. The largest diameter and height were, respectively, 18.1 mm and 2.73 m. Potassium fertilization did not affect the leaves K content, but increased stem yield up to 32,454 kg ha-1 with application of 132 kg ha-1of K2O. There was a linear increase in juice yield, reaching 7,322 L ha-1. The rate of approximately 100 kg ha-1 of K2O provided the highest total sugar (62.7 mg L-1) and K concentrations in the juice (1,144 mg L-1).Keywords: Sorghum bicolor, biofuel, potassium fertilization.

Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) contains fermentable sugars in the stem that can be converted to ethanol. The current study aimed at evaluating the performance of three sweet sorghum genotypes with five checks and contributes towards availing suitable sweet sorghum for industrial ethanol production. Field studies were carried out in Kenya at varied locations in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Sorghum was harvested at hard dough stage of grain development and evaluated for several stem juice production traits including plant height, cane yield, juice volume, degrees Brix, total, reducing, and non-reducing sugars, and ethanol yield via juice fermentation. Analyses of variance using SAS version 9.1 showed a significant effect of genotype for morphological characters and ethanol yield. Genotype EUSS10 produced the greatest cane (27.4 T/ha) and juice yield (7806.7 L/ha) whereas ACFC003/12 recorded the greatest ethanol yield (423.1 L/ha). At all sites, EUSS10 had the greatest plant height and days to 50% heading whereas SS04 had the greatest Brix and total sugar concentration. The greatest grain yield and non-reducing sugar concentration was produced by SS17 and SS21, respectively. Results of this study show that though Brix and total sugars are desirable for ethanol yield, cane yield, and juice volume of sweet sorghum determines the ultimate volume of ethanol produced.

<p>Terrestrial ecosystems worldwide are experiencing increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition because of fossil-fuel combustion and fertilizer applications. As a C4 feed crop, sweet sorghum (<em>Sorghum bicolor L.</em>) is widely used in the arid region of China since its high sugar content, good palatability and high yield. However, impacts of atmospheric N deposition on production of sweet sorghum are poorly understood in arid land ecosystems where soils are typically low in plant available N. At Hui Autonomous Region, Ningxia, China, a complete random block design was used to study the effects of four levels of N additions (45, 169, 197, and 224 kg ‍‌‌‍ha-1 year-1) on sorghum, node number, stem diameter, leaf number, plant height, yield per plant, dry matter, and sugar Brix of stem. Nitrogen application significantly affected the above parameters. When the amount of N applied was 224 kg ‍‌‌‍ha-1 year-1, the plant height (mean ± standard deviation, 256.9 cm ± 10.7, n=9), stem diameter (16.9 mm ± 1.1 ,n=9), number of leaf (10.8 ± 1.3, n=6) and node (4.9 ± 0.4, n=9), and dry matter per unit area (1.48 t ha-1 ± 0.3, n=9) was highest. While N application did not affect sugar Brix of stem. Therefore, N deposition plays a linearly positive role in enhancing the productivity of sweet sorghum in the arid region of China.</p><p>Keywords: Agronomic traits, C4 plant, Feed crop, Nitrogen addition</p>

This study aimed to evaluate the growth characteristics of irrigated Vitória pineapple plants grown in semi-arid conditions and determine its developmental stages based on those characteristics. It was used a randomized block design with four replicates. The experimental treatments were: plant harvest at 270, 330, 390, 450, 510, 570, 690, 750, and 810 days after planting (DAP). The following variables were determined: plant height, stem diameter, D-leaf length, D-leaf fresh and dry mass, biomass production of plants and plant parts (organs), and vegetative biomass. Five phenological stages are proposed based on vegetative biomass production: < 20% biomass production (V1); 21-40% (V2); 41-60% (V3); 61-80% (V4); and > 80% (V5). The maximum growth rate for plant height, D-leaf length, and stem diameter was observed at the end of the phenological stage V1 (390-411 DAP), and at the end of stage V5 these plant traits had average values of 106, 82, and 7 cm, respectively. The maximum biomass accumulation rates were observed at stages V4 and V5, resulting in a final fruit yield and total fresh biomass of 72 t ha-1 and 326 t ha-1, respectively. Finally, we estimated that 80% of the accumulated biomass may remain in the field after fruit and slip harvest, and could be incorporated as plant residue into the soil.

LEAF MORPHOLOGY OF SWEET SORGHUM CULTIVATED IN DIFFERENT ROW SPACINGS AND SOWING DATES ABSTRACT - The objective of this work was to evaluate the morphogenic characteristics of the main stem of sweet sorghum genotypes in different spacing between lines and sowing times. The experimental was carried out in a randomized complete block design in a trifactorial scheme (2x2x3), with two sweet sorghum (BRS 506 and Fepagro 19), two spacing between lines (0.50 m and 0.70 m) and three sowing seasons (October, November and December), four replications and two years of cultivation. The leaf elongation rate, the final number of leaves in the stem, the leaf appearance rate, phyllochron and shoot elongation rate were evaluated. The variables did not present significant triple interaction between genotype, spacing between rows and sowing time. The genotype BRS 506 presented a number of accumulated leaves, leaf elongation rate at constant sowing times. The delay in sowing seasons results in a lower number of accumulated leaves and the elongation rate of the stem for genotype Fepagro 19. The phyllochron for the 0.70 m line spacing is less than 0.50 m. The genotypes studied are suitable for production in the region, as long as sowing occurs in October. Keywords: leaf elongation, phyllochron, degree-days, Haun index, Sorghum bicolor.

The fossil energy sources used in the world are gradually decreasing and limited. Fossil fuels cause environmental pollution, and the unit price is constantly increasing. For this reason, demand for cheaper and renewable energy sources that do not pollute the environment is increasing day by day. The sweet sorghum plant has attracted attention in recent years with its high biomass yield, sugar content and bioethanol yield. In this study, it was aimed to determine the bio-fuel potential of some sweet sorghum genotypes in semi-arid climatic conditions. The experiment was set up in randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. Research was carried out in 2015 under Harran Plain (36o 42’ N and 38o 58’ E) second crop conditions, Sanliurfa, Turkey. In the study 49 genotypes of sweet sorghum were used. Stalk yield, juice yield, syrup yield, brix, sugar yield and theoretical ethanol yield were determined in the study. Significant differences were found between the genotypes for tested characteristics (P≤0.01). Stalk yield ranged from 7110.0 kg da-1 to 24262.5 da-1, juice yield from 2550.0 L da-1 to 12187.5 L da-1, syrup yield from 291.4 L da-1 to 2242.5 L da-1. Also, brix value varied between %7.0 and %18.87, sugar yield between 247.7 da-1 and 1906.1 da-1, Theoretical ethanol yield between 131.9 L da-1 and 1014.8 L da-1. Considering to stalk yield, juice and syrup yield, brix, sugar yield and theoretical ethanol yield; Nebraska sugar, Topper 76, Smith, M81E and Corina genotypes were found as the best. As a result of research, 21 genotypes with better performance than the others were selected for further studies.

KIRCHNER, J. HEIGHT OF PLANTS AND DIAMETER OF STEMS OF SORGHUM FORAGE IRRIGATED BY CUTS         2 ABSTRACT   Achieving high pasture yields is essential for maintaining feed levels in cattle herds. Plant height and stem diameter are determinants of pasture production success by the amount of mass produced. One of the factors that change these rates is irregular rainfall, making it necessary to replenish demand through irrigation. The objective of this work was to evaluate stem diameter and plant height under different water conditions and forage sorghum cuts in two agricultural years in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Two experiments were conducted in the agricultural years of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 in Santa Maria / RS, and plant heights and stem diameters were evaluated in six water conditions (non-irrigated, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125% of ETo), in three cutting periods (50, 80 and 110 days after sowing) in a randomized block design. Statistically significant differences were found for plant height and stem diameter variation, both according to irrigation depth and cut sequence.   Keywords: irrigated pasture, regrowth capacity, irrigation.

The genotype and environment interaction influences the selection criteria of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) genotypes. Eight sweet sorghum genotypes were evaluated at five different locations in two growing seasons of 2014. The aim was to determine the interaction between genotype and environment on cane, juice, and ethanol yield and to identify best genotypes for bioethanol production in Kenya. The experiments were conducted in a randomized complete block design replicated three times. Sorghum canes were harvested at hard dough stage of grain development and passed through rollers to obtain juice that was then fermented to obtain ethanol. Cane, juice, and ethanol yield was analyzed using the additive main effect and multiplication interaction model (AMMI) and genotype plus genotype by environment (GGE) biplot. The combined analysis of variance of cane and juice yield of sorghum genotypes showed that sweet sorghum genotypes were significantly (P<0.05) affected by environments (E), genotypes (G) and genotype by environment interaction (GEI). GGE biplot showed high yielding genotypes EUSS10, ACFC003/12, SS14, and EUSS11 for cane yield; EUSS10, EUSS11, and SS14 for juice yield; and EUSS10, SS04, SS14, and ACFC003/12 for ethanol yield. Genotype SS14 showed high general adaptability for cane, juice, and ethanol yield.

An experiment was carried out using eight double cross F1s (DCF1s) as lines and two testers to obtain sixteen Line ×Tester hybrids for the evaluation of major growth and flowering traits thereby to understand the breeding potentiality of the parental lines. The performance of growth and flowering traits of all twenty-six genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed all the genotypes were significantly different for all agro-morphological traits under study. The estimated general combining ability (GCA) effects showed that parent 5(P5), were superior for plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf length, days to flowering and attitude of floral axis followed by parent 2(P2) for leaf length, leaf width, days to flowering and attitude of floral axis and parent7 (P7) for number of flower, flower diameter, bud length and attitude for floral axis. Likewise; tester 1 found to be best combiner with significant GCA effect for almost all growth and flowering traits (except number of leaves). The plant height, leaf width, number of flower and attitude of floral axis showed prevailing additive gene action while stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf length, days to flowering, flower diameter and bud length indicated predominance of dominance gene action. We can conclude that parent P5, parent P2 and parent P7 can be used as good mother lines and the tester 1, as good donor for the seed production. SAARC J. Agri., 17(1): 175-187 (2019)
