The characterization of the different traditional knowledge held by riverine communities to manage natural resources is important to better subsidize appropriate species management strategies. This study sought to: i) describe aspects of family organization and the handicraft production of two resident artisan families of Amanã lake; ii) identify their areas of resource exploitation and verify the strategies for collecting non-timber forest products to produce artifacts; and finally iii) identify the plant species involved through botanical identification. To better assess the traditional knowledge we applied the participant observation technique through visiting and staying at the studied families homes. Our results show that the production of artifacts for sale is a family labor work. The main important species used by both families are: Philodendron fragrantissimum (“cipó-ambé” – a hemiepiphyte) for the production of paneiros (a basket used for carrying manioc); she uses Ischnosiphon arouma (“arumã duro” – another hemiepiphyte) for the production of sieves; and he uses Mezilaurus itauba (a hardwood species) for the production of paddles and cleaver handles.

Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) are natural resources collected from forests apart from timber. The use of NTFPs based on traditional knowledge is widely known among the natives in Borneo including Bidayuh community in Sarawak. An interview was undertaken with the villagers cum vendors at Duyoh Weekend Market along with a brief NTFPs survey at the nearby community forest (CF) recorded 76 NTFPs species belonging to 65 genera from 46 families used by this community.  Of these, 64 species or 84.21% were recorded in the nearby forest while 33 species or 43.42% at the village’s Weekend Market. Based on four major uses, more than 68.0% of them were edible or used in food preparation and 27.6% for medicinal purposes. Only 6 species (7.9%) were used for handicrafts, and was considered the least.  More than 17% were used for various other purposes including as ornamentals. Among the edible species, majority (54%) were fruits. Most (89.2%) of the edible species were also used for medicinal purposes. Most, if not all, households had collected the NTFPs from the forest, but only close to 20% of the village’s household actually sold these products at the village’s Weekend Market earning an average of RM400 to RM640 per month with higher income during fruiting season (October to December) which can reach RM200 per day.  Although majority grew the commonly used plants in their own land, substantial NTFPs (43.4%) sold were collected from the forest. Although this study is very short, at least it gave an idea that NTFPs are being used and its value to the community in terms of income. Thus suggest to have a longer-term study to cover all seasons/periods of the year to understand more on the products being sold and their values. More efforts in conserving the nearby forest is also warranted to ensure a continue supply of  NTFPs for sustainable supply for the present and future community use and to supplement their income.

Les forêts d’Afrique centrale contiennent plusieurs produits d’origine animale et végétale. Les produits d’origine végétale peuvent se distinguer en produits forestiers ligneux et non ligneux. Le présent travail de recherche porte sur l’importance et la gestion durable de quelques Produits Forestiers Non Ligneux (PFNL), notamment l’écorce de trois arbres (Garcinia lucida, Scorodophloeus zenkeri, Alstonia boonei) dans la localité de Ngovayang I. À l’aide d’un questionnaire semi-structuré, les caractéristiques du secteur des PFNL, les stratégies de gestion, ainsi que l’impact de la valorisation des PFNL ont été déterminés. Il ressort des enquêtes que les écorces de ces trois espèces sont connues et utilisées à des fins diverses telles que la consommation, l’automédication et la vente. L’initiation à l’utilisation de l’écorce de ces espèces est liée au sexe et est également fonction de l’âge des enquêtés. Leurs écorces sont approvisionnées sur le marché et vendues en majorité par les hommes. G. lucida et S. zenkeri sont utilisées à des fins nutritionnelles, médicinales et lucratives, tandis qu’Alstonia boonei est utilisée exclusivement à des fins médicinales. Pour des personnes plus jeunes, d’une tranche d’âge comprise entre 15 et 35 ans, l’exploitation de l’écorce de ces trois espèces n’a aucun impact néfaste sur la disponibilité des ressources forestières. S’agissant des personnes âgées de 35 à 65 ans, l’exploitation non contrôlée et l’écorçage anarchique de G. lucida et de S. zenkeri peuvent entrainer leur pénurie et même leur disparition dans cette région. Toutefois, la récolte échelonnée de l’écorce de G. lucida, S. zenkeri et A. boonei est utilisée comme stratégie de gestion de l’écorce de ces arbres dans cette localité.   Central African forests are teemed with several goods of animal and plant origin. Goods of plant origin are forest products and non-timber forest products. This research work focused on the identification and importance of some non-timber forest products (NTFPs), especially the bark of tree species (Garcinia lucida, Scorodophloeus zenkeri and Alstonia boonei) in the locality of Ngovayang I. Using a semi-structured questionnaire, the characteristics of the NTFP sector, management strategies, and the impact of NTFP exploitation were determined in Ngovayang I. Surveys show that the bark of these three species is well known and used for various purposes such as consumption, self-medication and sale. The initiation of the use of the bark of these species is linked to sex and also depends on the age of the respondents. Their bark is supplied on the market and sold mostly by men. G. lucida and S. zenkeri are used for food, medicinal and profit-making purposes, while A. boonei is used exclusively for medicinal purposes. For younger people, aged between 15 and 35 years old, the exploitation of the bark of these three species has no negative impact on forest resources. For old people (35 to 65 years), the uncontrolled exploitation and uncontrolled debarking of G. lucida and S. zenkeri can lead to the shortage and even extinction of these two tree species in the region. However, the planned harvest of the bark of Garcinia lucida, Scorodophloeus zenkeri and Alstonia boonei is used as strategy of management of the bark of these trees in this locality.

Dolok Sibual Buali Nature Reserve with area’s large + 5000 hectares is one of the five resort models resort based management scope Hall of the North Sumatera’s Natural Resources Conservation. Before implement resort based management, must be known the resort profile. This research aims to known the resort profile of Dolok Sibual Buali Nature Reserve based the cover of vegetation and disturbance area by human activity. This research was conducted in the Nature Reserve Dolok Sibual Buali South Tapanuli on May-June 2013. The methods of data collection are observation and interviews. The data analysis consist of maps analysis and interview results analysis. The cover of vegetation in Dolok Sibual Buali Nature Reserve included safe category  with the secondary forest area’s large 4624.84 hectares or about 92.26 % of the total area. The other cover of vegetation are mixed farms, dry land farms, shrubs and rice fields. The form of disturbance area that comes from villages around the area are illegal logging, land conversion, wildlife hunting, theft of non-timber forest products and ecotourism. The conflicts that often occur between communities and area manager are conflicts about area boundaries. Communities also felt anxious caused the wildlife damaged their gardens. While Non-timber forest products are relevant to conservation and development, there are diverse drivers that have a complex impact on their use and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). The erosion of TEK and its causes were evaluated on buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L. f.) in Quilombola communities in Brazil, by using ethnographic and ethnobotanical methods, including snow ball, 23 interviews, and participant observation. Informants reported 15 different uses of buriti divided into five categories (food, animal feed, handicrafts, construction, and ornamental); however, only five uses were actively performed until the end of this study. Differences between knowledge and uses of buriti could be attributed to proximity to urban centers, public policies for livestock production, and decreasing interest in handcraft manufacturing by using local resources. Therefore, it is important to ensure that knowledge and traditional practices in rural communities are combined for the socioeconomic benefits of rural/urban connection. Additionally, public policies need to focus on the local potential associated with biodiversity – including buriti – and with the TEK associated, instead of encouraging exotic cultures that significantly decrease biological and cultural diversity.

The forest in the south-west of the Central African Republic has enormous potential for non-timber forest products (NTFPs) of plant origin. The objective of this study is to identify the medicinal value of these NTFPs of plant origin with high health potential and the effects of human activities on their sustainability. The study was carried out in 09 villages in the intervention zone of the Kadéi Forestry Company. From various methodological approaches (ethno botanical survey, participant observation, inventory technique), data were collected, processed and analysed. From the results obtained 91 non-wood medicinal plant species belonging to 29 families and to one large systematic group, the Magnoliophytes were identified. These species represent a means of therapeutic remedies used by 91% of surveyed populations to treat many diseases, symptoms and infections. Tree barks (43.26%) and leaves (39.21%) are the most commonly harvested organs. The variables collected related to the types of uses allowed to identify 19 priority NTFPs medicinal and underline the process of degradation of 7 important NTFPs. This degradation is mainly due to the way in which the natural resource is harvested, causing a large number of non- woody medicinal plant species to become rare. The definition of strategies based on ecological and socioeconomic harvesting techniques of NTFPs are solutions to ensure sustainable management of these products for the benefit of future generations.

Many people in the semi-arid tropics strongly depend on non-timber forest products (NTFPs) for livelihood. Increasing threats on NTFP-providing tree species, due to land-use intensification and over-harvesting, require ecological studies as well as additional information provided by local people. One important NTFP-providing tree in West Africa is Anogeissus leiocarpa. Even though this species is highly used, ethnobotanical studies on A. leiocarpa are scarce and address mainly qualitative aspects. Our study investigates uses, perceptions of the population development, and management strategies of A. leiocarpa among the Gulimanceba people in eastern Burkina Faso. We conducted a quantitative ethnobotanical survey and investigated distribution of traditional ecological knowledge related to the species on a local scale, i.e. difference in knowledge between villages, genders, and generations. Interviews reveal that A. leiocarpa is harvested by local people for 18 different uses and emphasize its high importance for local people. Ethnobotanical knowledge of A. leiocarpa was mostly evenly spread between genders and generations, while it slightly differed between villages. Although local people did not actively protect A. leiocarpa, current local harvesting modes and management resulted in sustainable use. However, ongoing land-use intensifications require adapted management strategies to guarantee the persistence of this important species. Our results provide, in combination with ecological results of our previous study, appropriate management recommendations. Our study emphasizes the importance of ethnobotanical studies on a local scale level in order to develop management strategies that are reliable in the specific area under the specific circumstances.

The Apatani, non-nomadic tribe, have evolved an ecologically sustainable system of rural forestry in Ziro Valley, a proposed heritage site of UNESCO. They have been using non-timber forest products (NTFPs) grown in homestead and nearby forests for a very long period. The present study was aimed at identification of priority NTFPs and uses, their availability status and availability trend, conservation need, and sustainability interventions. Qualitative methods of research like, exploratory survey, questionnaire survey, focus group discussion, semi-structured interview of key informants, etc. were employed for data collection. The Apatani used 112 priority NTFPs for food supplement, herbal medicine, house building material and other purposes. However, on the basis of ecological importance such NTFPs were categorized as very low, low, moderate, high, and very high vulnerable species. Twenty vulnerable species like Antiitari ayi (Actinidia callosa), Biiling (Choerospondias axillaris), Henchi (Rubus niveus), Jojuru ayi (Coccinia grandis), Ngiilyang Khiiko (Centella asiatica) etc. should be conserved and seventeen not vulnerable species at this stage like, Padii hamang (Cardamine hirsute), Sankhe (Quercus griffithii), Bije (Phyllostachys manii), Hiigu hamang (Oenanthe javanica), Kiira (Quercus dealbata ), etc. could be commercialized. However, a balance needed to be struck between commercialization and conservation by adopting a comprehensive policy based on scientific and traditional Apatani knowledge for harvesting and regeneration of NTFPs. Homegardening or community farming is recommended for sustainable supply of commercially important species to be domasticated.

Forest products play an important role in supporting livelihoods in many developing countries. The study examined diversity and local uses of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in Zamay forest reserve in Cameroon. The inventory design consisted of three collection units (CU): CU1,  CU2 and CU3 in the north, center and south of the reserve respectively. In each CU, seven plots of 2 500 m2 each (50 m × 50 m) were established and woody individuals (dbh ≥ 10 cm) were inventoried. Local uses of NTFP were determined through semi-structured and structured interviews and plot methods were used for the inventory of the resource species. Statistical analyses were performed with Origin 6.0 and XLSTAT Softwares. A total of 745 stems was recorded, representing fifty-two species grouped in twenty-two families and thirty-seven genera. The Shannon diversity index (H’) varied from 2.52 to 3.11, and Shannon evenness index (EQ) from 0.75 to 0.83. The most dominant families were Combretaceae, Burseraceae, Balanitaceae and Mimosaceae. A total of 44 useful species was recorded in five categories of uses: medicine, food, fodder, crafts and fertilizers. The most important species in terms of use values were Acacia albida Del., Anogeissus leiocarpus (DC.) Guill. & Perr., Khaya senegalensis (Desr.) A. Juss., Balanites aegyptiaca L., Ziziphus mauritiana Lam., Tamarindus indica L. and Sclerocarya birrea (A. Rich.) Hochst. Means of frequency of citation and use values were not significantly different. Results of this survey will allow considering reforestation with valued species in the degraded parts of the reserve.

<p>This research supports the sustainable environmental development, especially at Perhutani area. The objective of this ethno-ecological study was to know relationship between daily life of local people related to their agroforestry practices in edge of the forest belong to Perhutani at the landscape of Bromo Tengger Semeru-East Java. The Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) showed the importance of the forest for the local people. This study covered the perception and conception traditional management system of environment by the local society and also impact of their activities. Data were collected by applying ethno-ecology research methods. Quality of data  were measured by means of participatory ethno-botanical appraisal (PEA) and some research methods included semi-structural and open discussion, in-deep interview, direct observation and plants identification. The results showed that development and management of the natural resources, in Komplangan agroforestry, were highly related to the plant conservation policy. The land use system was adapted from indigenous knowledge which consisted of holly sites (Pedanyangan), worship sites (Sanggar Pamujan), cemetery area and terrace. The conservation model and traditional knowledge in agricultural practices could be used as a model of komplangan area which should be taken into account as the key of biodiversity conservation. Traditional knowledge from these integrative studies will support the sustainable development of NTFPs.</p>
