ABSTRACT: This paper presents harmonic distortion assessment by area based approach at single phasing of an induction motor. This has been achieved by assessing voltage and current signals using area based approach. Some specific reference signals have been defined, after which, real power system data are plotted with this reference signal and areas thus formed by the real power system data with the reference signal have been calculated wherefrom contributions of fundamental waveform and harmonic components in real and reactive powers have been assessed separately. Single phasing is done on induction machine and total harmonic distortion factors have then been calculated. Significant change is observed in harmonic distortion due to single phasing.

Purpose This paper aims to work out a method for calculating losses in induction motor steel taking into account its saturation. Design/methodology/approach The theory of electric machines is applied during the analysis of induction motor equivalent circuits. The theory of Fourier series is used to determine the harmonic components of voltage, current and power. Instantaneous power theory and trigonometric transformations are used to solve algebraic and differential equations and their systems. The methods of approximation and interpolation are applied to obtain analytical expressions from the experimental data. Experimental research was carried out to verify the reliability of theoretical provisions and research results. Findings A method for assessing an induction machine steel as a function of the generalized electromotive force has been proposed. It allows taking into account higher harmonics of the current, which are caused by the presence of nonlinearity of an induction motor magnetic circuit. Practical implications The obtained results can be used in calculating the energy characteristics and operating modes of an induction motor, as well as in the construction of control systems. Originality/value A method for determining the losses in the stator steel of an induction motor, using a generalized electromotive force, has been proposed for the first time. It enables taking into account the currents flowing both in the stator circuit and in the rotor circuit.

Power quality is an important aspect in electrical distribution and utilization systems. Variable frequency drive (VFD) controlled induction motors are widely used in industries. The output current of VFD which is nonsinusoidal is given to the induction motor. This paper proposes a motor side active power filter (MSAPF) so as to provide a pure sinusoidal current to the induction motor. An evaluation of two control strategies has been discussed in this paper i.e. Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) theory and Instantaneous Reactive Power theory (IRPT) in the generation of the reference signal. These techniques are simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. These simulations demonstrate the reduction in total harmonic distortion (THD) in the motor current with active filter connected to the motor side.

An important drawback in the application of model-based predictive controllers for multiphase systems is the relatively high harmonic content. Harmonics arise due to the fixed sampling-time nature and the absence of modulation methods in the control technique. Recent research works have proposed different procedures to overcome this disadvantage at the expense of increasing the complexity of the controller and, in most cases, the computational requirements. There are, however, natural ways to face this harmonic generation that have been barely explored in the scientific literature. These alternatives include the use of variable sampling times or the application of the observer theory, whose utility has been stated without excessively increasing the computational cost of the controller. This paper presents the basis of both methodologies, analyzing their interest as natural alternatives to mitigate the generation of harmonic components in modern electrical drives when using predictive controllers. A five-phase induction machine is used as a case example to experimentally validate the study and draw conclusions.

This paper proposes a novel method of correcting power factor of an induction motor by the making the use of active power filters. In the electrical power system mostly 80% to 85% power factor is reduced by using induction motor as a load in various industries for acting as a prime mover. The induction motor running with a little power factor may cause power quality problems in the electrical power system. Due to very little power factor the load draws high starting current from the electrical grid, this causes various problems like voltage fluctuation, voltage sag and sometimes warmth the winding of the induction machine. Therefore, it is required to develop a method which uses active filters for improving the power factor of the induction motor

In this paper, a modified Sinusoidal Pulse width Modulation (MSPWM) technique and a modified single-phase H-bridge seven-level inverter is proposed. The switching pulses for the proposed seven-level inverter are generated using a single triangular carrier waveform, a fully rectified sinusoidal signal, and three stepped reference signals (Uref1, Uref2 and Uref3). Using optimization technique, the magnitude of the stepped reference signal is determined so that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage waveform is minimum and the fundamental component, RMS value of the voltage is improved for a given modulation index Ma as compared to the Sinusoidal Pulse width Modulation (SPWM). By the implementation of the new scheme, the seven-level of the inverter output voltage level (+Vdc, +2Vdc/3, +Vdc/3, 0, −Vdc, −2Vdc/3, −Vdc) is obtained for any given modulation index. Similarly, if only two stepped reference signals are used then the inverter will act as a five-level inverter for any modulating index ma. The proposed MSPWM and seven-level inverter are simulated on MATLAB/SIMULINK for R, R-L load and on a single-phase capacitor-start and capacitor-start-run Induction Motor.

When multiple sources contribute competitively to the noise level, multi-channel control architecture is needed, leading to more cost and time for control computation. We, hence, are concerned with a single-channel control method with a single-reference signal obtained from a linear combination of the multiple source signals. First, we selected 3 source signal sensors for the reference signals and the error sensor, selected a proper actuator and designed the controllers: 3 cases of single-channel feedforward controllers with a single-reference signal respectively from the source signals, a multi-channel feedforward controller with the reference signals from the source signals, and the proposed controller with the reference signal from weighted sum of the source signals. The weighting factors and the filter coefficients of the controller were determined by the FxLMS algorithm. An experiment was then performed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method comparing the control performance with other methods for a tower air conditioner. The overall sound pressure level (SPL) detected by the error sensor is compared to evaluate their performance. The reduction in the overall SPL was obtained by 4.74 dB, 1.96 dB and 6.62 dB, respectively, when using each of the 3 reference signals. Also, the overall SPL was reduced by 7.12 dB when using the multi-reference controller and by 7.66 dB when using the proposed controller. Conclusively, under the multiple source contribution, a single-channel feed forward controller with the reference signal from a weighted sum of the source signals works well with lower cost than multi-channel feedforward controller.
