Introduction: Oral health care during pregnancy is greatly important as it is crucial to the health and well-being to both pregnant mother and baby. Studies showed that mothers with oral health problem have greater risk of prematurity and low birth weight babies. This study aimed to measure the associated factors of oral health problem among pregnant mothers. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted among purposely selected 296 pregnant mothers aged 18- 45 years from the biggest district in Pahang State, Malaysia. This 18 months study used validated self-administered questionnaire which was asking on socio-demographic characteristics, and knowledge, attitude and practice on oral health. Oral health status was assessed by dentists using Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Need (DFMT index). Descriptive analysis used to describe respondents background and multinomial logistic regression used to examine the associations. Results: Majority of the respondents (89.9%) were among young mothers (35 years), Malay (91.9%), mean gestation of two, and from low socioeconomic status (59.5%). Of the 296 respondents, 111 (48.1%) had low experience with dental caries, 57 (24.7%) had moderate experience, and 63 (24.3%) had high experience with dental caries. Older age had higher risk to experience dental caries and those who had good attitude were protected, p=0.018 and p=0.023 respectively. Conclusion(s): Age and attitude were significant factors associated to oral health problem among pregnant mothers. Thus, health promotion and good attitude should be instilled from younger age.

Good oral health is necessary to overall health and well-being. Most oral diseases, and in particular dental caries, are entirely preventable. However, in 2010, 3.9 billion people were globally affected by oral conditions, and the global prevalence of untreated caries in permanent teeth was 35.3%. The contemporary thinking is that dental caries starts as an infectious disease which then becomes a chronic disease. Public health measures and other caries-preventive approaches have resulted in dramatic reductions in dental caries across populations. However, in a given population, not all individuals have experienced these successes uniformly. High-risk populations, defined as those with a ‘higher-than-expected risk', exist for most diseases and conditions including caries. The global scientific literature suggests that these are the following: (1) minorities, (2) individuals with low-socioeconomic status and (3) other vulnerable populations such as the very young and elderly who continue to battle with oral health disparities by experiencing higher oral disease levels including dental caries. As the science and resources exist to prevent caries, it is essential to identify and target these high-risk individuals and populations.

Malocclussion is one of the most common case in oral health and  taking of third position after dental caries and periodontal disease. Malocclusion is a deviation form from normal occlussion. Malocclussion may caused problems in oral function, psychosocial problems and oral health problem, one of them is caries. Many of malocclusion character associated with severity of caries. The aim of this study was to know the association between severity of malocclussion with caries among adolescents students in SMKN 3 Pariaman. This study use observasional analytics with cross sectional approach. Sample were adolescents (16-19 years old) in SMKN 3 Pariaman.The sample were 75 students consisting of 15 students  in each of grade complexity of malocclusion. The severity of malocclusion were identification based ICON (Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need) and caries was assess use DMF-T Index. The data were analyzed by Kruskal Walis test and Mann-Whitney test.  Mean DMF-T  students of SMKN 3 Pariaman was 3,00±1,716 (medium category).  DMF-T indeks of malocclusion Easy was 1,466±1,407 (low category), Mild is 1,933±1,222 (low category), Moderate was 3,133±1,125 (medium category), Difficult was 4,066±1, (medium category), and Very Difficult was 4,400±1,298 (medium category). Mean of  DMF-T indeks  increased with increasing ICON of malocclusion. Statistical test result obtained by the p-value (p<0,05). There were association between severity of malocclussion with caries among adolescents students in SMKN 3 Pariaman.   Key words : malocclussion, ICON, caries, DMF-T index

Abstract Background Oral health, such as other health conditions, reflects social inequalities. These inequalities are fed back by oral diseases, generating a vicious and sustainable circle. Racial issues play a prominent role, once they are associated with oral diseases as risk markers. Among the different oral diseases, periodontal disease associated with racial inequalities in adolescents is emblematic. Thus, this study aimed to analyse the race differentials associated with the levels of periodontal disease, regardless of other risk factors. Methods Data from the 2010 national epidemiological survey on oral health were used, with 5445 adolescents (15 to 19 years old). Multinomial logistic regression models were used. Dependent variable was the Community Periodontal Index. Independent variable was self-declared race/colour, categorized as white, pardo (mixed-race identity) and preto (black). The effect of race was controlled in the presence of the covariates sex, years of study, decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth (DMFT index), toothache and self-reported need for dental treatment. Odds Ratio (OR) was estimated and sample weights were considered. Results The simple model showed preto with 2.7 (p &lt; 0.05) and 8 (p &lt; 0.05) times more likely to have shallow and deep periodontal pockets, respectively, compared to white. Pardo was 1.5 (p &lt; 0.05) times more likely to have periodontal calculus. In the multiple model, even in the presence of all independent covariates, preto showed association with shallow pockets (OR = 2.51, p &lt; 0.05) and pardo showed association with the presence of calculus (OR = 1.37, p &lt; 0.05). Conclusions Regardless of sex, education, perception of pain and need for treatment and the DMFT index, race/colour was associated with periodontal problems. It should be noted that skin colour is not a biological risk factor for periodontal disease. However, the findings of this study revealed racial inequities regardless of socioeconomic variables. Key messages Raises the need to guarantee health as a resource for social development, with science having a fundamental role in recovering the citizenship of this historically forgotten population. The findings of this study revealed racial inequities regardless of socioeconomic variables.

Objectives: To assess oral health status and practices of 5- and 12-year-old Tribal school children.Methods: A total of 418, 5-year-old children and 327, 12-year-old children were enrolled. Information on demographic characteristics of participants along with oral health behavior was collected. Clinical data were collected on dental fluorosis, periodontal status, dental caries and treatment needs. Dean's index criterion was used to assess dental fluorosis. Community Periodontal Index (CPI) for periodontal conditions and Dentition status and treatment needs for dental caries were recorded. Results: Between meal sugar consumption was high (100%). None of the children in both the age groups had visited trained health personnel for dental treatment. Dental fluorosis prevalence in 5- and 12-year olds was 11.9% and 22.9% respectively. Bleeding on probing and calculus was common between both the age groups. A low mean number of healthy sextants were found and this decreased with age. Mean dmft/DMFT values for 5- and 12-year olds were 4.13 ± 3.90 and 1.15 ± 1.62. Significant caries index (SIC) scores for 5- and 12-year olds were 7.17 ±4.30 and 3.78 ± 3.21 respectively. Conclusion: The present study reveals high sugar consumption, dental fluorosis, poor oral hygiene, and untreated dental disease of tribal children. Under these circumstances, the implementation of preventive programs including restriction of sweets in school premises for the tribal children is the key to good oral health.

Objective. To assess the periodontal status among the leather factory workers in Dewas and to provide a baseline data for the oral health care and promotion programs. Materials and Methods. A total of 850 study population was considered for examination, and the age ranged from 20 to 60 years. All those factory workers with low socioeconomic status and poor background were considered. The data were collected by means modified World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Health Assessment 1997 Performa and clinical examination with the use of the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Statistical analyses were used: chi-squared test, Mann–Whitney U test, and Kruskal–Wallis test. Results. The sociodemographic characteristics were found to be significantly associated with the periodontal status in the study population (p≤0.05). Mean number of loss of attachment (LOA) 0 sextants was 3.55 ± 2.35, LOA 1 was 0.935 ± 1.3, LOA 2 was 0.414 ± 0.8, LOA 3 was 0.529 ± 0.94, and LOA 4 was 1.24 ± 0.04; all the parameters showed statistically significant difference (p=0.001) except LOA 1 and LOA 2. Conclusion. The periodontal health status of the factory workers is poor. Factors associated with high prevalence of periodontal disease could be the following: a high rate of tobacco consumption and not cleaning their teeth at all along with other associated factors like stress, poor oral hygiene, etc.

Abstract Background Dental caries have a serious impact on general health and well-being; however, there is a lack of relevant data on the development trends of dental caries in permanent teeth among 12-year-old children in China. We aim to assess long-term trends of dental caries in permanent teeth among 12-year-old children in China and identify the susceptible subgroups based on five consecutive national surveys from 1995 to 2014. Methods A total of 88 972 subjects were extracted from five consecutive national surveys (1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2014). Standardized dental examinations were conducted and the oral health status of each subject was recorded. The prevalence of Decayed, Missing and Filled teeth (DMF%), mean Decayed, Missing, Filled teeth score (DMFT) and Caries Filling Ratio (CFR) were used as measurement indicators. Cochran–Armitage trend test was used to evaluate the trends in DMF% and CFR, and multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate the trends in DMFT. Results A V-shaped fluctuating upward trend in DMF% during 1995–2014 was observed (Z =  − 13.124, P < 0.001), and the DMF% in 1995–2014 was 21.1%, 15.9%, 16.2%, 21.9% and 24.3%. The trend in DMFT was approximately consistent with DMF% (β = 0.057, P < 0.001), but the downward volatility appeared in 2014. The DMFT in 1995–2014 was 0.38, 0.28, 0.31, 0.66 and 0.54. A continuously fluctuant trend in CFR was observed during past two decades (Z = 1.927, P > 0.05), and the CFR in 1995–2014 was 17.4%, 22.8%, 19.3%, 23.4% and 15.6%. The DMF% and DMFT of rural children had a larger absolute increase than that of urban children during 1995–2014 (DMF%-urban: Z =  − 0.242, P > 0.05; DMF%-rural: Z =  − 19.036, P < 0.001; DMFT-urban: β = 0.035, P < 0.001, DMFT-rural: β = 0.077, P < 0.001). The DMF% and DMFT in girls were higher than that in boys at each survey year (P < 0.001). CFR of urban children was higher than that of rural children at each survey year (P < 0.001). Conclusions Over the past 20 years, DMFT and DMF% of 12-year-old children in China presented V-shaped fluctuant upward trends, with a decline trend from 1995 to 2000 and an upward trend from 2000 to 2014. CFR had no significant improvement. The rural children and girls are the more vulnerable groups in the development of dental caries and need to pay priority. Our study supports the continuation of policies to improve children’ oral health.

Abstract Introduction. Evaluation of the oral health among adult Poles carried out in the framework of the “National Monitoring of Oral Health and Its Determinants” study and the research results of clinical centers in Poland indicate that dental caries, periodontal diseases and missing teeth are a major health problem. Aim. The aim of the study was determining the reasons for reporting to the dentist of 35-54-year-old people, the assessment of dental health and prosthetic needs. Material and methods. The study comprised 154 patients aged 35-54 reporting in 2015 to the dental clinic in Lublin, which offers treatment financed by the National Health Fund or for a fee. Gender, age, the place of residence and the reason for the reporting to the dentist were analyzed. The place of residence was a village, a town of less than 200 thousand inhabitants or the city of more than 200 thousand residents. The reason for reporting to the dental clinic was a check-up visit, toothache or loss of filling. Dental condition was assessed by calculating the DMF index. The prosthetic state and needs were evaluated. The results were statistically analyzed. Results. Most patients reporting to the dental examination were women (59.09%) and residents of a big city (70.78%). More than a half of the patients (55.84%) had a check-up appointment, 25.32% appeared due to the loss of filling, and 18.83% - because of a toothache. The frequency of decay in the study group was 100% and the DMF index values ranged from 2.0 to 32.0, assuming an average of 21.18±5.02, and with the age the DMF index values increased. The highest number of decayed and extracted teeth were found in the rural population. Both residents of big cities and patients who reported for regular check-ups had the biggest number of fillings. Conclusion. Dental caries is still a major health problem in Polish population aged 35-44. Poor oral health among the adult population in Poland is due to the low health awareness of society. This requires launching large-scale dental educational campaigns and prevention measures among adult Polish citizens, especially in rural areas.

As fissuras labiopalatinas (FLP) são as malformações congênitas mais comuns da região craniofacial e apresentam diferentes fenótipos e características clínicas, que diferem entre si de acordo com as estruturas anatômicas envolvidas: fissura de lábio, fissura de lábio e palato e fissura de palato isolada. A etiologia das FLP é multifatorial e inclui fatores genéticos e ambientais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar o papel das fissuras labiopalatinas na prevalência de cárie dentária por meio de uma revisão na literatura. O defeito anatômico que envolve o rebordo alveolar e/ou o palato pode resultar em agenesias dentárias, dentes supranumerários, anomalias de forma e estrutura, bem como atresia maxilar, mordidas cruzadas posteriores e apinhamentos dentários. Também, a presença da FLP pode resultar aos indivíduos problemas durante alimentação, pronúncia de alguns fonemas, audição e integração social, o que poderia afetar a qualidade de vida do indivíduo e da dinâmica familiar. Quando a saúde bucal de crianças e adolescentes com FLP foi investigada, maior retenção do biofilme microbiano nas superfícies dentárias, de inflamação gengival e maior ocorrência de cárie dentária foram observados. Para um diagnóstico e tratamento adequados, é fundamental uma abordagem multidisciplinar, individualizada, para orientação e planejamento do tratamento dos indivíduos com a malformação, desde o nascimento até a fase adulta. O conhecimento dos efeitos da FLP na saúde bucal e no bem-estar dos indivíduos e das famílias afetadas é fundamental para mudanças nas políticas públicas das práticas de saúde e redução da sobrecarga da presença da malformação congênita.   Palavras-chave: Cárie Dentária. Saúde Bucal   Abstract Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are the most common congenital malformations of the craniofacial region and they present different phenotypes and clinical characteristics, which differ according to the anatomical structures involved: cleft lip, cleft lip and palate and isolated cleft palate. The etiology of CLP is multifactorial and includes genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of cleft lip and palate in the prevalence of dental caries through a literature review. The anatomical defect involving the alveolar ridge and / or the palate can result in dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth, anomalies in shape and structure, as well as maxillary atresia, posterior cross bites and dental crowding. Also, the presence of CLP can result in problems for individuals during feeding, pronunciation of some phonemes, hearing and social integration, which could affect the individual's quality of life and family dynamics. When the oral health of children and adolescents with CLP was investigated, greater retention of microbial biofilm on dental surfaces, gingival inflammation and the occurrence of dental caries were observed. For an adequate diagnosis and treatment, a multidisciplinary and individualized approach is essential to guide and plan the treatment of individuals with the malformation, from birth to adulthood. The knowledge of the effects of FLP on oral health and on the well-being of affected individuals and families is fundamental to changes in public health practice policies and to reduce the burden of the presence of the congenital malformation.   Keywords:  Cleft Lip.
