This study attempts to explore the effect of interpersonal-trust on opportunism and business performance of gem dealers in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the study suggests three major hypothesis which was tested on primary data gathered from 100 registered gem dealers in the Ratnapura district in Sri Lanka, using structured questionnaires. The results demonstrate that inter-personal trust i.e. credibility, benevolence, ability among gem dealers have a significant negative impact on opportunism and positive significant impact on business improvements. Whereas highlighting the inverse relationship between business opportunism and performance. Furthermore, this study concludes that inter-personal trust has greater impacts on the well-being of this industry highlighting it as the main relational attribute among gem dealers interactions. Thus, inter-personal trust lowers their transaction costs in exchanges and increase the profit levels of gem dealers in Sri Lanka.

Teaching is one of the professions with the highest levels of stress and disquiet at work, having a negative impact on teachers’ well-being and performance. Thus, well-being is one of the priorities in human resource management (HRM) in schools. In this regard, this paper studies the relationship between HRM, well-being and performance, observing the incidence of leadership and innovation in these relationships. The objective is to measure the extent to which it is necessary to encourage sustainable environments that promote the well-being of teachers and, by extension, students. The study used the methodology of structural equations and a sample of 315 secondary school teachers. The work validates the influence of leadership by example and information management on HRM and performance. In addition, we confirm the significant effect of human resource management on educational performance. The relationship is observed both directly and through the mediating effect on the improvement of well-being. On the other hand, the positive influence of innovation on performance, both in schools and in the classrooms, is reaffirmed. These results suggest the need to zero in on the human resources policies in schools linked to the improvement of teacher well-being and educational performance. They also highlight the role of school and classroom innovation as a key element in maintaining educational quality.

Electronic monitoring is more and more widespread and affects many employees around the globe. The current meta analysis collected data of 59 independent samples (with 223 effect sizes) to estimate the effect of electronic monitoring on job satisfaction, stress, and performance. A random-effects model indicated a small negative effect of monitoring on job satisfaction, r=-.09, and a small positive effect on stress, r=.12. There was no relationship with performance, r=-.01. Even if the effects of monitoring on job satisfaction and stress are small, taking the large number of employees who are monitored for several hours a day into account, these effects may have a severe and negative impact on employees’ well-being. Performance maintenance is the main justification for the use of electronic monitoring, but the non-existing relationship of monitoring with performance questions the validity of this justification.

This chapter aims at assessing the impact of governance on the country's economic and human well-being in the selected South Asian countries. The study finds that for the countries-India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, over the years 1990-2012, the growing rate of GDP per capita (PPP) and growing employment to population ratio has a significant negative impact on the Global Hunger Index as expected. Also the panel regression run for the eight SAARC countries over the period 2007-13 to find out the impact of each of the six governance indicators on the per capita GDP showed that political stability and absence of violence, government effectiveness and regulatory quality have very strong and significant role in augmenting the economic output besides the remaining indicators. The trends for each of the indicators across countries over time show that except Bhutan, none of the countries are exhibiting good performance of the governance indicators.

Cancer diagnosis and treatment can have a significant negative impact on patients’ well-being, body image, sexuality, and sense of self. Reconstructive surgery is commonly assumed to offer improved body image and quality of life to patients whose appearance has altered as a result of cancer treatment, but deciding whether or not to undergo reconstructive surgery can be difficult. This chapter uses the example of breast reconstruction to consider the ways in which patients faced with complex decisions about appearance-altering reconstructive surgery might be helped to make the choice that is best for them. It outlines typical options around the type and timing of breast reconstruction, considers patients’ motivation for surgery, and satisfaction with the outcome. It then explores ways of helping them make their decision, highlighting the use of decision aids and interventions focused around patients’ expectations of surgery as a way of facilitating shared decision-making in this context.

Capital structure describes a mix of long-term debt capital and equity capital employed by a company to fund its operation and finance its assts. The objective of the study is to identify the determinants of the capital structure and examine whether each of the determinants have significant impact on capital structure. A sample of 25 beverage food and tobacco sector firms listed on Colombo Stock exchange(CSE) in Sri Lanka over the period of 2016 to 2020 were considered for the study. The independent variables such as profitability (PROR), firm size (FMSZ), tangibility (TANR) and liquidity (LIQR) and dependant variable such as long term debt ratio (LTDR), short term debt ratio (STDR) were used to measure the leverage level of the firms. The data were analysed and hypotheses were tested through regression analysis and correlation analysis by use of SPSS. Coefficient of regression used to identify the significant impact of each determinant against the endogenous factors. The investigation empirical findings reveals that firm size, tangibility and liquidity have significant negative impact on leverage level (STDR), while profitability has positive insignificant impact on leverage level (SDTR). On the other hand all four element have insignificant relationship with LTDR.


Hearing is one of the most crucial sense for human beings as it connects them to external world. Hearing loss impairs communication which is an essential human function. Hearing disability has massive negative impact on life, work, physical and emotional well-being as well as relationships and is rated as the third most common health problem affecting relations and quality of life. Hearing aid devices can selectively intensify sound signals in order to suit the hearing characteristics of the patients and is a boon for people with hearing misfortune. However, there is a huge gap between the potential and actual hearing aid users. This work provides a critical look into the various challenges posed by hearing aid users, the comparative of the existing state-of-art hearing devices and throws light on bottlenecks in hearing aid design and performance. Filter bank, being the holy grail of Digital Hearing aid, needs special attention for improving the hearing aid performance. Reconfigurability is the need of the hour for providing flexible and tailormade hearing aids that can suit individual hearing requirements. The paper discusses and gives an in-depth insight into the techniques for reconfigurable Filter bank design for performance augmentationin terms of parameters like Signal quality, Auditory compensation, Computational and Hardware complexity, area, speed, power, etc.

Record keeping plays a vital role in development by providing recorded information which is crucial in the strategic formulation of national development policies and plans. The purpose of the study is to examine the influence of record keeping practices on the business performance of small and medium scale enterprises in Sri Lanka. Record keeping practices consists of proper accounting records, preparation of accounting records and accounting records procedures whereas business performance is measured by organizational goal achievement, organizational effectiveness and organizational efficiency records. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the primary data from 75 SMEs which were selected by means of the random sampling technique. The results reveal that record keeping practices have significant positive influence on business performance of Small and medium enterprises in Sri Lanka. It can be recommended that academic institutions and other bodies which are responsible for SMEs should organize training programmes for those operators who do not have the technical knowhow in the field of accounting to come to grips with it and also provide some SME-specific accounting guidelines and template forms for capturing accounting practices for the operators to use.

Human resources (HR) is the only important organizational asset that can drive other resources. Human resources can affect the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization (Simamora, 2006). Secondary data in this research are: Data obtained from the management of PT. Bank Syariah Mandiri in the form of data turnover. Population in this research is employees of PT. Bank Syariah Mandiri Semarang, Jl. Pandanaran no. 90 a total of 137 employees. The method of collecting primary data is done by using documentation technique. Role conflict has a significant effect on the intention to quit. It is concluded that the greater the role conflict increases the intention to quit. The result of hypothesis 2 testing showing the role conflict has a positive effect on intention to quit is accepted, where high conflict can increase the intention to exit.Organizational support has a significant positive effect on commitment. It is concluded that the greater the support the organization increases its commitment. Organizational support has a significant negative impact on intention to quit. It is concluded that greater organizational support decreases the intention to quit. Commitment has a significant negative effect on intention to quit. It is concluded that the stronger the commitment can decrease the intention to quit.

This research examines the effect of knowledge management on innovation and organizational performance (Case Study on Creative Industries in the field of Application and Game Development in Malang Raya). Looking at the existing phenomena clearly shows that most creative industries still show a lot of room for improvement regarding their innovation and business performance and the lack of application of knowledge management in creative industries compared to large organizations. Data collection methods in this study include field research that is by collecting necessary data (primary data) from a sample using a questionnaire instrument that explains and tests hypotheses (explanatory) and uses literature studies derived from literature and scientific journals. The results of this study are that management knowledge has a significant effect on innovation and performance. Innovation has a significant effect on performance and that knowledge management has a significant effect on performance through innovation Changes in performance are primarily determined by the high ability of innovation due to the creative industry players have increased the ability in knowledge management.
