The use of branched-hole wells in old fully developed oilfields permits to increase hydrocarbons production at the expense of involving the undrained areas in development. The most wide experience of multihole wells operation in Russia was gained in oil fields; and in gas fields the construction of such wells was launched in the field Yujno-Russkoye, West Siberia. The gained experience in designing, construction and operation of multihole wells in the Extreme North fields will enable to recommend these designs in the Arctic region conditions including offshore fields.

There has for long been discussion among Soviet geographers on the definition of various terms in Soviet usage to indicate the northern part of the USSR. Some of these terms—“the Arctic” [Arktika], “the Arctic region” [arkticheskaya oblast'], “the sub-Arctic” [subarktika], “the polar regions” [Zapolyar'ye]—are normally used to denote areas defined according to physical criteria. Such criteria are similar to those usually applied outside the USSR, such as the “10° C. July isotherm”, the “tree line”, or the “limit of continuous permafrost”, and, again as in the non-Soviet world, the terms have no generally accepted precise meaning and must be defined by each user. But in addition to these terms for natural regions, there are certain terms in predominantly economic and administrative usage: “the north” [sever], “the far north” [dal'niy sever], “the extreme north” [krayniy sever], “the northern marches” [severnyye okrainy], and “the Soviet north” [sovetskiy sever]. Some explanation of their current connotations may be helpful to those studying Soviet literature.

The main goal of this study is to carry out the investigation of the climatic parameters variability and the role of global atmospheric circulation in their trends over the Arctic region of West Siberia (60-70°N, 60-90°E) using reanalysis data. The characteristics of spatial and temporal variability of meteorological parameters (surface air temperature and soil temperature, atmospheric pressure, snow depth and surface albedo) were calculated using ERA-Interim reanalysis data over the period of 1979−2015. It was established that in the beginning of XXI century, there is an air and soil temperature decrease in winter and autumn and its statistically significant increase in spring and summer. The tendency to permafrost area degradation is observed for the Arctic region. The maximal changes are observed in low-temperature permafrost soils than in soils with higher temperature. This trend is accompanied by the decrease in snow cover depth and surface albedo. Global circulation indices variability, its relationships with meteorological parameters in West Siberia and with sea ice cover extent in the Arctic Seas indicate that atmospheric blocking processes, which are responsible for anticyclonic type of weather, were developed in the region during last decades.

The article deals with the problem of the development of the domestic nuclear icebreaker fleet in the context of the implementation of nuclear logistics in the Arctic. The paper analyzes the key achievements of the Russian nuclear industry, highlights the key areas of development of the nuclear sector in the Far North, and identifies aspects of the development of mechanisms to ensure access to energy on the basis of floating nuclear power units. It is found that Russia is currently a leader in the implementation of the nuclear aspect of foreign policy and in providing energy to the Arctic region.

The acquisition of real-time temperature and relative humidity (RH) profiles in the Arctic is of great significance for the study of the Arctic’s climate and Arctic scientific research. However, the operational algorithm of Fengyun-3D only takes into account areas within 60°N, the innovation of this work is that a new technique based on Neural Network (NN) algorithm was proposed, which can retrieve these parameters in real time from the Fengyun-3D Hyperspectral Infrared Radiation Atmospheric Sounding (HIRAS) observations in the Arctic region. Considering the difficulty of obtaining a large amount of actual observation (such as radiosonde) in the Arctic region, collocated ERA5 data from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and HIRAS observations were used to train the neural networks (NNs). Brightness temperature and training targets were classified using two variables: season (warm season and cold season) and surface type (ocean and land). NNs-based retrievals were compared with ERA5 data and radiosonde observations (RAOBs) independent of the NN training sets. Results showed that (1) the NNs retrievals accuracy is generally higher on warm season and ocean; (2) the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of retrieved profiles is generally slightly higher in the RAOB comparisons than in the ERA5 comparisons, but the variation trend of errors with height is consistent; (3) the retrieved profiles by the NN method are closer to ERA5, comparing with the AIRS products. All the results demonstrated the potential value in time and space of NN algorithm in retrieving temperature and relative humidity profiles of the Arctic region from HIRAS observations under clear-sky conditions. As such, the proposed NN algorithm provides a valuable pathway for retrieving reliably temperature and RH profiles from HIRAS observations in the Arctic region, providing information of practical value in a wide spectrum of practical applications and research investigations alike.All in all, our work has important implications in broadening Fengyun-3D’s operational implementation range from within 60°N to the Arctic region.
