Students’ Understanding of Liıght Concepts ın the Secondary School

Learning science is a complex process and students develop limited understanding even after instruction. The aim of the research is to use students’ diagrams to assess conceptual understanding of science related to ‘light’ in grade eight students. Data were collected with the use of a written test, questionnaire and documents. Each question of the written test consisted of two parts; diagram and written explanation. Data obtained were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. It was noted that students provided more than twenty different diagrams for each question instead of correct diagram. A large number of incorrect diagrams with incorrect explanations showed that students did not possess a correct understanding of concepts related to light. Responses to teacher questionnaire revealed that 98% of teachers provide opportunities for their students to draw diagrams to assess understanding of science. Students’ diagrams can be effectively used to assess conceptual understanding of science knowledge of secondary students.

The study, entitled "Application of the Probing Prompting Learning Model in Science Lessons at SMPN 3 Selong" aims to determine the influence of students in understanding the concept of learning science in the classroom. The research subjects were students of class VIII at SMPN 3 Selong, namely class VIII D and class VIII E, with the data retrieval process using a written test of 6 items of description. The average value obtained in the control class is 63.48 while the experimental class is 80.48 with a difference of 17 points. For the hypothesis value thitung = 2.042 while ttabel = 1.079 from the results of the calculation of the hypothesis test results of learning science students obtained thitung> ttabel =, then the hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted. So it can be concluded that there is an influence in the application of the probing prompting learning model in science learning at SMP 3 Selong

The rapid development of technology offers many advantages to the proses of learning in the classroom. This experimental research aimed to investigates the effectiveness of learning mathematics delivered through blended learning. In particular, this study compared the effectiveness of blended learning using Moodle and traditional one in relation to students’ conceptual understanding. The data was gathered through written test and interview. This study involved 127 students of grade eight secondary school. The data shows that students who learn in blended learning approach have better conceptual understanding rather than their counterparts. The students claim that they can access learning material and revisit some difficult material in their convenience time. Nevertheless, there are some obstacles faced by students related to maintaining their motivation to learn independently and keeping distraction off to access other website when they learn online.Key words: blended learning, conceptual understanding

Improving students‘ learning strategies is important for them in order to learn successfully. This article compares the self-perception of the use of learning strategies in Spanish and Lithuanian secondary schools students when learning science and analyse the students understanding of these strategies to determine the sociocultural environment influence on this perception. Results emphasize the need to include support actions to improve the management of strategies in secondary school.

The background of this study is the low result belaja fifth grade science students at SDN 021Tanjung Palas, out of 25 students only 8 students (32.00%), rendahnnya learning outcomes iscaused by: (a) students lack enthusiasm in learning; (b) students are not able to answerquestions that are of reason; (c) teachers do not involve students actively in learning; (d) lessthan the maximum in using props; and (e) the level of students' understanding of the subjectmatter IPA is still low. This research is a classroom action research (PTK), this study aims todescribe the results of learning through the use of learning model CTL. The subjects werestudents of class V A 021 SDN Tanjung Palas. This study was conducted by two cycles.Improved learning outcomes in terms of four categories, namely absorption, the effectivenessof learning, mastery learning completeness students both individual and classicalcompleteness and thoroughness of learning outcomes. The instrument used for data collectionis an oral test and a written test in the form of worksheets that do after the learning process.The results showed that the learning outcomes of science students has increased at eachcycle, as shown by the acquisition of mastery learning students, the first cycle the number ofstudents who pass are 15 students or 60% and the second cycle the number of students whopass are 22 students or 88% , It can be concluded that through CTL learning model canimprove learning outcomes a fifth grade science students at SDN 021 Tanjung Palas.

The authors of this study have attempted to understand whether study habits affect academic achievement among secondary and senior secondary school students of Mysore. It is also attempted to know whether students at secondary level differ from senior secondary level on their study habits. The study was conducted on the sample of 625 students of Mysore City in India using stratified random sampling technique. Results indicated that the study habits facilitate higher academic achievement. Further, it was also found that secondary school students are significantly better than senior secondary students on study habits. The findings are analyzed and explained. Thus, study habit is found to be an important correlate of academic achievement.

The aim of this study was to show that some of the errors made by students when responding to mathematics assessment items can indicate progress in the development of conceptual understanding. By granting partial credit for specific incorrect responses by early secondary students, estimates of the difficulty of demonstrating full and partial knowledge of skills associated with the development of proportional reasoning were determined using Rasch analysis. The errors were confirmed as indicators of progress, and hence partial knowledge, when the thresholds of achievement followed a logical order: The greater the proficiency of the students, the more likely they were to receive a higher score. Consideration of this partial knowledge can enhance the descriptions of the likely behaviours of students at the various levels of learning progressions and this can be informative for teachers in their planning of learning activities.

Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of a curricular model named Situated Game Teaching through Set Plays (SGTSP) on secondary students’ tactical knowledge in a 10-lesson soccer unit. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a repeated measure was used to examine the effectiveness of the SGTSP model in comparison with a technique-focused approach. Participants’ perceptions of SGTSP were collected through reflection journals throughout the unit. A convenient sample of 27 sixth graders from two classes participated in this study. Data were collected from a tactical knowledge test and reflection journals. A 3 × 2 × 2 factorial analysis of variance with a repeated measure was conducted to analyze the data. Responses to reflection journals were analyzed by deductive analysis and constant comparison. Results: Participants’ tactical knowledge in the SGTSP condition improved significantly more than those in the comparison condition over time. Conclusions: The findings provided evidence supporting the effectiveness of the SGTSP model on developing students’ tactical knowledge as compared to a technique-focused approach.

This study investigated the influence of fishing related activities on academic performance of secondary school students in Rachuonyo North Sub-County. The specific objectives were to examine the activities associated with fishing and determine how they influenced academic performance of secondary students in the Sub-County. The study targeted students and principals of the 49 secondary schools in Rachuonyo North Sub-county. The research used simple random sampling to select 14 public secondary schools and 20 Form Three students from each of the sampled schools. The total sample size was 292 respondents. Primary data was collected and analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods and then presented in tables in percentages. Data analysis was done using SPSS and the Microsoft Excel software. The study established that students participated in fishing activities while attending school. Major fishing activities that students engaged in included: actual fishing an agreement  index of 82.9% of students; repairing of fishing nets which was supported by 74.2% of students; setting of nets in the lake which was supported by 84.4% of students; and removal of fish from the nets which was agreed to by 83.9% of students. Some (91.7%) of the students believed that their counterparts who engaged in fishing activities tended to perform poorly in their classwork.  The study has recommended that parents, School Boards of Management and the communities along the beaches collaborate with each other in order to keep students from engaging in fishing activities for this likely to improve school attendance and academic performance of students. The Government should enforce compulsory basic education as well as provide it free to all children at this level of education.

This study provides support to the characteristics of participatory and anticipatory stages in secondary school pupils' abstraction of mathematical conceptions. We carried out clinical task-based interviews with 71 secondary-school pupils to obtain evidence of the different constructed mathematical conceptions (Participatory Stage) and how they were used (Anticipatory Stage). We distinguish two moments in the Participatory Stage based on the coordination of information from particular cases by activity-effect reflection which, in some cases, lead to a change of focus enabling secondary-school pupils to achieve a reorganization of their knowledge. We argue that (a) the capacity of perceiving regularities in sets of particular cases is a characteristic of activity-effect reflection in the abstraction of mathematical conceptions in secondary school, and (b) the coordination of information by pupils provides opportunities for changing the attention-focus from the particular results to the structure of properties.
