The paper aims to summarise the experience of studying and interpreting the piece of ancient Russian literature Paleya Tolkovaya. Paleya is a complex semantic text containing polemical, exegetical, and encyclopedic components. Moreover, it has significant religious and philosophical content. Particularly, the paper discusses the apologetic and missionary meanings which can be found in the text of Paleya. The key conclusion of the paper is that the text of Paleya Tolkova is rather affirmative and defending than a polemic piece of literary art in its attitude to Orthodox faith. The theological ideas contained in the text are sustained in the spirit and traditions of the Antiochian theological school, and the apologetic messages of the text are confirmed by the exegesis of the sacred books, supported by the patristic tradition and apocryphal legends.

The paper provides an analytical and historical survey of the studies of the interaction between literature and philosophy in the Russian and foreign humanities. Particular attention is paid to the paradoxical fact that despite the obvious synergy of philosophy and literature in Russian culture, which is essentially “a form of national self-consciousness,” there have not yet been developed optimal methods and tools to access the philosophy of the literary text. Thus, huge factual material has been left unexamined. It seems that the current surge of interest in the interaction of literature and philosophy is related not so much to the national cultural tradition as to the relevance of this topic in the West, where non-literary circumstances have not affected philosophical interpretation of literary texts. The break with the original national philosophy of the early 20th century, caused by socio-historical cataclysms, has posed a dilemma for Russian scholars: either to leave theoretical questions unresolved or resolve them with the reference to the Western models offered by the “continental” tradition or the analytical philosophy of literature.

This article discusses the lexical and syntactic features of I.A. Krylov’s fable texts. I.A. Krylov’s literary art is analysed against the context of a creative competition between the old and new styles of Russian literature in the first third of the 19th century. A particular focus of this article is on the analysis of Krylov’s contribution to the standardisation of the Russian literary language, as well as to the outlining of the directions of its further development. The specific linguistic features of Krylov’s literary style are revealed and illustrated.

The connection of the modern psychology and formal systems remains an important direction of research. This paper is centered on philosophical problems surrounding relations between mental and logic. Main attention is given to philosophy of logic but certain ideas are introduced that can be incorporated into the practical philosophical logic. The definition and properties of basic modal logic and descending ones which are used in study of mental activity are in view. The defining role of philosophical interpretation of modality for the particular formal system used for research in the field of psychological states of agents is postulated. Different semantics of modal logic are studied. The hypothesis about the connection of research in cognitive psychology (semantics of brain activity) and formal systems connected to research of psychological states is stated.

This paper discusses a worship service I designed and led in November of 2014 at Andover Newton Theological School (ANTS). As a member of the faculty, a practicing Christian and a religious educator and interfaith organizer, I am invited to lead a service each year in the Chapel at ANTS. In particular, as the ANTS’ co-director of the Center for Interreligious and Communal Leadership Education (CIRCLE), a joint program between ANTS and Hebrew College, I was charged with making the service an “interfaith” gathering, open and inviting for Unitarian Universalist, Muslim, and Jewish guests, while still providing an authentic expression of Christian worship. This article offers a first-person narrative and thick description of the service, the planning process, the broader context of interreligious education at our schools, and reflections on both the possibilities and limits of sharing particular religious rituals across diverse religious traditions for educational purposes. Drawing on the work of interreligious educators I identify a set of goals for interreligious education and explore the potential for religious ritual to both contribute to and complicate these goals. I describe the worship service as a ritual event in the life of a Christian seminary as well as its meaning and role in the process of interreligious coformation that is part of CIRCLE’s work.
