One of the efforts to increase food sufficiency, resilience and self-sufficiency is the use of the yard. Cultivation of vegetables using verticulture techniques can be applied in the use of yards. The verticulture technique was chosen because it has advantages: it does not require large costs, is easy, can be a source of family food, the beauty of the home and the environment and produces oxygen. This training activity aims to introduce vegetable farming techniques with the verticulture system as an effort to strengthen household food security. Participants in the activity were members of the Kencana Lestari Women's Farmer Group, Rancaekek Kencana Village, Bandung Regency. The methods used in this activity are lectures, practice and mentoring.  The methods used in this activity are lectures, practice and mentoring.This activity has provided benefits for activity participants. The result was that there was a significant change in cognitive terms, namely an increase in the level of participants' knowledge about vegetable cultivation techniques using the verticulture system. For the psychomotor aspect, there is an increase in the skills of participants to cultivate various types of vegetable plants using verticulture techniques.

Household food security level essentially is the ability of households meet food sufficiency. These capabilities are greatly influenced by many complex factors, but  generally  associated  with  changes  in  behavioral  aspects  of  food  production, consumption and allocation of households resources. The purpose of this study was to analyze  the  level  of  household  food  security  based  on  low  land  rice  irrigated.  The study was conducted in three districts of rice production center in the province of Bali in 2012, i.e. Tabanan district, Gianyar and Buleleng. Data collection was conducted through interviews with 216 respondents. Household food security was measured by cross classification of the share of food expenditure and consumption of energy. The results  of  the  analysis  showed  58.33  %  of  households  have  a  lower  share  of  food expenditure  and  41.67%  household  have  higher  share  of  food  expenditure.  In aggregate  86.57%  of  farm  households  is  quite  in  consuming  energy  and  13.43% is less  in  energy  consume.  The  level  of  household  food  security  of  farmers  in  the aggregate 49.07% of the household were categorized as secure, 37.9% as vulnerable, 8.79% as insufficient, and 4.17% as insecure. There is a correlation between the level of  household food  security  with  age  of  housewife,  level  of  education,  farm  size  and household income.

The increasing number of people who are not accompanied by the expansion of the area in Delanggu Village has resulted in reduced land for farming to meet food needs independently. The majority of the yards owned by residents in this village have an average area of 3 m2 which is relatively narrow. Vegetable cultivation with vertical farming techniques is one solution to overcome these problems. This cultivation can be done on vertical media so it does not require a large area. The purpose of this activity is so that the community can meet their food needs in the form of vegetables independently so as to create household food security. The service activity was carried out in Tegalsari Hamlet, Delanggu Village which was attended by 17 PKK members, 9 cloud community members and 6 teenagers. The community service method is carried out in stages, namely: preparation of tools and materials, socialization of efforts to create food security through vegetable cultivation with verticulture farming techniques and the correct way of vegetable cultivation starting from seeding, care and harvesting, and finally monitoring participants viaWhatsApp and offline. From the series of activities, the participation and enthusiasm of the participants was quite good. PKK members apply it more, because they have more time at home compared to the general public and youth groups.Meningkatnya jumlah penduduk yang tidak dibarengi dengan perluasan wilayah di Desa Delanggu mengakibatkan berkurangnya lahan untuk bercocok tanam guna memenuhi kebutuhan pangan secara mandiri. Mayoritas lahan perkarangan yang dimiliki oleh warga di desa ini memiliki rata-rata luasan 3 m 2 yang tergolong sempit. Budidaya sayuran dengan teknik pertanian vertikultur merupakan salah satu solusi untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut. Budidaya ini dapat dilakukan pada media vertikal sehingga tidak membutuhkan lahan yang luas. Tujuan darikegiatan ini agar masyarakat dapat mencukupi kebutuhan pangan berupa sayuran secara mandiri sehingga tercipta ketahanan pangan rumah tangga. Kegiatan pengabdian dilaksanakan di Dukuh Tegalsari, Desa Delanggu yang diikuti oleh 17 anggota PKK, 9 orang masyarakat awam dan 6 orang remaja. Metode pengabdian masyarakat dilakukan secara bertahap, yaitu: persiapan alat dan bahan, sosialisasi mengenai upaya terciptanya ketahanan pangan melalui budidaya sayuran dengan teknik pertanian vertikultur dan cara budidaya sayuran yang benar mulai daripembibitan, perawatan dan panen, serta yang terakhir yaitu monitoring peserta melalui WhatsApp dan luring. Dari rangkaian pelaksanaan kegiatan, partisipasi dan antusiame peserta cukup baik. Anggota PKK lebih banyak mengaplikasikannya, dikarenakan mempunyai lebih banyak waktu di rumah dibandingkan dengan kelompok masyarakat umum dan remaja.

<p>Social capital is an important component in a community. Social capital is used to help each other when in need, such as the need to secure food sufficiency in a household. Social capital consists of trust, networks, and social norms. Household food security is defined as a condition of food suffiency in one household in terms of availability, accesibility and consumability. This study aims to analyze the roles of social capital in household food security in Ciaruteun Ilir village, Cibungbulang subdistrict at Bogor Regency. The data collected by using a survey to 60 horticultural farmer houselds. The farmer’s household food security is not determined by socio economic level, spending level and the number of household members. Farmers use the capital social to generate income for buying foods.</p><p>Keywords: social capital, food security, horticultural farmer</p>

This research was conducted in the month of June (2012) at Chisapani, Nagdaha and Kathjor VDCs of Ramechhap district of Nepal to analyze the impact of sustainable soil management practices on household food security. Pre-tested semi structured interview schedule were used to collect the primary data from 120 farmers, 40 farmers from each VDC by applying simple random sampling technique. It was found that before adopting sustainable soil management practices the food sufficiency from own production was 3.98 months and after the adoption the food sufficiency months was 7.67 and farmers perceived that there is increased access to food. Similarly, the income and expenditure on food consumption before the adoption of practices were Rs. 25758.33 and Rs. 12133.33 respectively and after the adoption of practices were Rs. 51675 and Rs. 7175 respectively. Farmers expressed that increase in production and productivity was major reason in adopting sustainable soil management practices. The increase in the production and productivity was the main reason for contributing towards household food security. Lack of irrigation facilities was major problem in adopting the sustainable soil management practices. The study revealed that sustainable soil management practices had significant impact on food sufficiency, income and production of different crops which ultimately results to improvement in food security in the study area than before.
