Professor Alois Zlatnik (born 1902 in Dvur Kralovy, Czechoslovakia, died 1979 in Brno) was a well-known scientific researcher in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and other European countries. His academic career encompassed forest typology, phytobiocoenology, vegetation ecology and plant taxonomy. His fundamental exploration of the biocoenological structure of the virgin forests of Transcarpathia (Ukraine) commenced in the 1930s. At the same time he can be seen as the founder of long-term forest ecosystem research (ecological monitoring). Zlatnik was also an innovator regarding ecological principles of nature conservation of mountain regions.

The greatest advance in ecosystem research was made in the last century. The development and acceptance of forest ecology by foresters occurred because it provided a means for recognizing, understanding, classifying and mapping the natural variation of forests. Forest ecology involved studies at the individual, population, community, and ecosystem levels but such studies always needed to involve the ecosystem concept. Today, the new concept of “ecosystem and landscape forestry” integrating ecological and socio-economic research has been developed on the basis of EU COST Action E-25 European Network for a Long-term Forest Ecosystem and Landscape Research Programme. An analysis has been carried out of the present situation in forest research in the Czech Republic. The need for forest ecosystem and landscape research is obvious.

Indonesia as an archipelago country is very potential to develop the fishery economy. Tegal Fish Trading Market is one of facility to support fishery economic activities in Indonesia which has various problems. Redesign of Tegal Fish Trading Market with Eco-Architecture as a design strategy, expecting to solve and overcome the existing problems of the building and the area. With building evaluation, we know the problems that exist in the establishment of the Building. Then ecological principles selected to solve the problems that exist. Based on the results of identification, the ecological aspects that will be implemented is nature conservation, especially the beach and coastal, sustainable utility planning that focused on waste treatment and sanitation system, structural planning, facade, building appearance and ecological material so this building could survive in long term (sustainable). By redesign, this Fish Trading Market can be better planne, and then it will have more attractive view of buildings, planned waste treatment systems and planned sanitation systems, and also can recover the nature.

AbstractDeveloping an academic career can be exciting, rewarding and stimulating. It can also be challenging, disheartening, and highly insecure. Results from a survey of Animal Studies (AS) scholars identifies reasons why pursuing a career in AS might generate additional challenges, over and above those experienced by academics generally. For example, 44 percent of respondents stated that in their view, undertaking research in AS “creates challenges for an academic career.” This is compared to just 16 percent who thought that it is an advantage. Yet despite the challenges, there is much that is positive about AS. Participants described being in “dialogue with clever colleagues,” viewed their work as “totally engaging,” and reported feeling “morally useful.” This in turn affords AS scholars an authenticity that may be of long-term benefit in the competitive and constantly transforming world of higher education.

Mountain ski tourism is an important type of tourism, which is economically and culturally valuable industry particularly for developed countries. Not all mountain regions are appropriate for ski tourism development, however. The purpose of the report is to show the specifics of a mountain destination and its potential of offering ski tourism. Some analyzes and reports will outline the characteristics and the specifics of offering of mountain tourism for ski. The results are indicating the potential and the structural risks, new market conditions and trends, the principal of planning and the frame work of mountain ski tourism development. Factors that include climate, topography, scenery and the seasonal cycle all determine the facilities and activities of mountain ski tourism, reflecting the strong interdependency between the mountain ecosystem and the mountain tourism system. Ski tourism development must therefore go hand in hand with protecting and preserving these resources to ensure tourism's long-term growth and viability. Investments in ski tourism-related facilities can valorize these resources in terms of creating employment and income to the local residents of mountain regions.
