The fraction number is a subset of the set of real numbers. Although simple and often used, this material is still quite complicated for students. To solve this problem, a solution is given in the form of the game method "Uno Mathematics". "Uno Mathematics" is an effective, interesting, and interactive way to present students to build and strengthen mastery and understanding of mathematical concepts in the long term. The steps for the game method "Uno Mathematics", namely: (1) reviewing the number of game cards as much as 48 pieces, (2) explaining the "Uno Math" game procedure and the rules of lowering the cards, (3) grouping students in groups, (4 ) give a set of “Uno Mathematics” cards to each group, (5) remind students, and (6) start the game.

Abstract Background Recent studies have shown that mixed predominantly differentiated-type (MD) early gastric cancer (EGC) might have more malignant potential than pure differentiated-type (PD) EGC. However, no study has analyzed all differentiated-type EGC cases treated endoscopically and surgically. This study aimed to compare the differences in clinicopathological features and long-term prognosis between MD- and PD-EGC. Methods We evaluated all patients with differentiated-type EGCs who were treated endoscopically and surgically in our hospital between January 2010 and October 2014. The clinicopathological features and long-term prognosis of MD-EGC were compared with those of PD-EGC. Results A total of 459 patients with 459 lesions were evaluated in this study; of them, 409 (89.1%) and 50 (10.9%) were classified into the PD and MD groups, respectively. Submucosal invasion was found in 96 (23.5%) patients of the PD group and in 33 (66.0%) patients of the MD group (p < 0.01). The rates of positive lymphatic and vascular invasion and ulceration were significantly higher in the MD group than in the PD group (p < 0.01). The proportion of patients with lymph node metastasis was also significantly higher in the MD group than in the PD group (5 (10%) vs 6 (1.5%), p < 0.01). The 5-year overall and EGC-specific survival rates in the PD group were 88.3 and 99.5%, respectively, while they were 94.0 and 98.0% in the MD group, respectively. Conclusions MD-EGC has more malignant potential than PD-EGC. However, the long-term prognosis of MD-EGC is good and is not significantly different from that of PD-EGC when treated appropriately.

Many poor children are underprepared for demanding primary school curricula. Research in cognitive science suggests that school achievement could be improved by preschool pedagogy in which numerate adults engage children’s spontaneous, nonsymbolic mathematical concepts. To test this suggestion, we designed and evaluated a game-based preschool curriculum intended to exercise children’s emerging skills in number and geometry. In a randomized field experiment with 1540 children (average age 4.9 years) in 214 Indian preschools, 4 months of math game play yielded marked and enduring improvement on the exercised intuitive abilities, relative to no-treatment and active control conditions. Math-trained children also showed immediate gains on symbolic mathematical skills but displayed no advantage in subsequent learning of the language and concepts of school mathematics.

Writing in mathematics has already been recognized as a very meaningful learning activity. Johnson (1983) suggests that if students can write clearly about mathematical concepts, then they probably understand them. In my classes, I frequently give students opportunities to write. Students write about their problem-solving strategies and about their understanding of new concepts; they also try their hand at writing word problems. Last year, my eighth-grade first-year-algebra students worked in groups writing a chapter on factoring polynomials for an algebra textbook. This was the first time I had used writing as an integral part of a long-term assignment. The two-week project described in this article was designed as a response to the students' need for new learning experiences and my need for new assessment tools. As an added benefit, the activity proved to be an excellent way for students to review material in a way that made them think in fresh terms.

In Europe 160 million people are members of social economy enterprises and mutual societies. Members that work at social enterprises usually are bound with an employee relationship with their organization; on the other hand participating in a social enterprise could be their only chance to find a job, especially for economies that face a long-term recession such as the Greek economy. Social enterprises and entrepreneurs invest in reciprocity which represents that positive actions will inspire reciprocal positive actions. The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of reciprocity on members’ decision either to invest in social enterprises or to work for them acquiring in both cases the necessary shares. For this reason, a survey was conducted among Greek members of social enterprises listed in the Greek Social enterprises directory, to investigate their aspects about reciprocity and if these aspects affect their decision to work in a social enterprise or support financially them. The survey process returned 142 fully completed questionnaires. The analysis identified a sub group (5 over 27 items) of the questions used to measure reciprocity that can be used to classify participants into shareholders - members (investors) and shareholders - workers in social enterprises. It is worth mentioning that sex or other demographic characteristics of the respondents do not affect this classification while there are only aspects of positive reciprocity that have either positive or negative effect on the possibility to work in social enterprises. Social entrepreneurs and the Greek state could use these findings in order to direct and manage their expansion efforts.

Abstract Study question Is there a negative effect of long-term cryopreservation upon pregnancy outcomes after transfer of vitrified-warmed blastocysts stored in an open-device system? Summary answer Prolonged cryopreservation of vitrified blastocysts up to 24 months increased the incidences of clinical pregnancy, ongoing pregnancy, and live birth, while decreased early miscarriage rate. What is known already Vitrification is adopted as the dominant approach for cryopreservation of human oocytes and embryos. However, little is known about the potential effect of prolonged storage after vitrification on the genomic integrity and metabolism of embryos. Several studies have sought to decipher the effect of cryopreservation duration on IVF pregnancy outcomes, but few were confined to vitrification and the results were inconsistent. Study design, size, duration This retrospective study included 6722 patients undergoing their first vitrified-warmed blastocyst transfer (VBT) cycles from January 2015 to June 2019 in a single fertility center in South China. The study was approved by the hospital’s Ethics Committee. Participants/materials, setting, methods A total of 6722 eligible patients were divided into five groups according to the storage duration after vitrification: Group I: 0–3 months; Group II: 3–6 months; Group III: 6–12 months; Group IV: 12–24 months; Group V: 24–36 months. The IVF pregnancy outcomes were compared between groups. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to evaluate the independent effect of storage duration on pregnancy outcomes. Main results and the role of chance The odds of clinical pregnancy outcomes were similar from Group 1 to 4. However, the chance of clinical pregnancy (Group 1 as reference; Group 2: adjusted odds ratio (aOR)= 1.04, 95% CI 0.93–1.17; Group 3: aOR = 1.02, 95% CI 0.84–1.25; Group 4: aOR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.66–1.31; Group 5: aOR = 0.54, 95% CI 0.38–0.76) , ongoing pregnancy (Group 2: aOR=0.99, 95% CI 0.89–1.11; Group 3: aOR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.77–1.14; Group 4: aOR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.62–1.22; Group 5: aOR = 0.41, 95% CI 0.29–0.60), and live birth rate (Group 2: aOR=1.00, 95% CI 0.89–1.12; Group 3: aOR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.81–1.19; Group 4: aOR = 0.91, 95% CI 0.65–1.27; Group 5: aOR = 0.46, 95% CI 0.32–0.66) significantly decreased, while the early miscarriage rate (Group 2: aOR=1.11, 95% CI 0.92–1.35; Group 3: aOR =1.25, 95% CI 0.92–1.70; Group 4: aOR = 1.33, 95% CI 0.77–2.31; Group 5: aOR = 2.42, 95% CI 1.36–4.31) significantly increased as the storage duration increased up to 24–36 months. Limitations, reasons for caution The primary limitation of this study was its retrospective nature. Besides, as all these data come from a single IVF treatment center, the results should be confirmed by a larger multicenter study. Wider implications of the findings: Our study provides more evidence about the negative impact of long-term storage of vitrified embryos on the clinical outcome. Clinicians should adapt FET strategies based on the embryo storage duration. Trial registration number Not applicable

Abstract Primary refractory AL has a poor prognosis although some patients (pts) can be salvaged with allogeneic SCT. Induction of complete remission (CR1) with conventional chemotherapy prior to conditioning and SCT may improve long-term event-free survival (EFS). Between 03/91 and 10/03, 59 adults with primary refractory AL (defined as >15% marrow blast cells on day 30 of induction) were treated with VP 2.4 g/m2 by 34 hr. IV infusion beginning on day 1 followed by CY 2.0 g/m2 IV daily on days 3, 4 and 5 with hyperhydration (3 L/m2/d) as bladder prophylaxis. Six pts received VP 3.0 g/m2 and 1 patient received CY 1.8 g/m2 x 4 days. The study included 39 males and 20 females with a median age of 41 years (range 17–60). Diagnoses were AML (42 pts), ALL (13 pts) and biphenotypic AL (4 pts). Eleven pts (19%) presented with a WBC count > 50 x109/L and MRC karyotype was favourable in 4 pts, intermediate in 34 pts and adverse in 20 pts; metaphase analysis failed in 1 patient. All AML pts had already received high-dose cytosine arabinoside (HIDAC) and either daunorubicin (DNR) (n=33) or mitoxantrone and VP (n=9). ALL pts had previously received DNR, vincristine and prednisone with (n=9) or without (n=4) L-asparaginase. Biphenotypic AL pts had been induced with HIDAC, DNR, vincristine and prednisone. Induction day 30 marrow blast count was > 40% in 35 pts (59%). The most common grade I/II non-hematologic toxicities of VP/CY were oral mucosal (44% of pts), GI (20% of pts) and hepatic (15% of pts); only one patient developed grade III/IV toxicity (pulmonary). Median time to recovery of ANC > 0.5 x109/L and platelets > 20 x109/L was 26 and 22 days, respectively. Three pts (5%) died prior to day 21 of VP/CY and were not evaluable for response (2 pts sepsis, 1 patient pulmonary hemorrhage). Twenty-four pts (43%) were also refractory to VP/CY but 32 pts (57%) entered CR1. Response rates were similar in AML (54%) and ALL/ABL (67%) (p=0.52) and analysis of baseline patient characteristics did not reveal any predictors of response to VP/CY. Twenty-nine of 32 CR1 pts proceeded to SCT (24 allogeneic, 5 autologous); five pts with AL refractory to VP/CY also underwent allogeneic SCT although all subsequently relapsed. Four of the autologous SCT pts relapsed with only one patient remaining alive in CR1. Estimated 5-year EFS for the entire cohort of pts is 23%. The only positive predictor of survival was male sex (p=0.03) and cytogenetic risk group did not influence outcome (p=0.69). In the allogeneic SCT group, 5-year EFS was 45% and was signficantly better for pts with AML (52%) compared to pts with ALL (14%, p=0.04). In conclusion, VP/CY is able to induce CR1 in the majority of pts with primary refractory AL. For pts with AML in CR1 that have a suitable donor, subsequent allogeneic SCT results in a favourable long-term EFS. Although pts with primary refractory ALL have a high CR1 rate with VP/CY, overall outcome for this subgroup remains poor.

Object The authors conducted a study to assess the clinical pattern, radiological features, therapeutic strategies, and long-term outcomes in patients with intramedullary spinal cord cavernomas (ISCCs) based on a large case series. Methods This retrospective study identified 96 patients (60 males, 36 females) surgically (81 cases) or conservatively (15 cases) treated for ISCCs between May 1993 and November 2007. Each diagnosis was based on MR imaging and spinal angiography evidence. For all surgically treated patients, the diagnosis was verified pathologically. The neurological outcomes pre- and postoperatively, as well as long-term follow-up, were assessed using the Aminoff-Logue Disability Scale. Results The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 34.5 years (range 9–80 years). Of the lesions, 68 (71%) were located in the thoracic spine, 25 (26%) in the cervical spine, and only 3 (3%) in the lumbar spine. The median symptom duration was 19.7 months. The clinical behavior of the lesion was a slow progression in 73 cases and an acute decline in 23 cases. Long-term follow-up data (mean 45.8 months, range 10–183 months) were available for 75 patients (64 surgical cases and 11 conservative cases). In the surgical group, a complete resection was achieved in 60 patients, and incomplete resection was detected in 4 patients after operation. At the end of the follow-up period in the operative group, 23 patients (36%) improved, 35 (55%) remained unchanged, and 6 (9%) worsened. In the nonoperative group, 5 patients improved, 6 patients remained unchanged, and none worsened. Conclusions For differential diagnosis, spinal angiography was necessary in some cases. For most symptomatic lesions, complete microsurgical resection of the symptomatic ISCC is safe and prevents rebleeding and further neurological deterioration. However, in patients whose lesions were small and located ventrally in the spinal cord, one can also opt for a rigorous follow-up, considering the high surgical risk.

AbstractThis article discusses the use of a scientific calculator in teaching calculus by using representations of mathematics notions in different sub-languages (analytical, graphical, symbolical, verbal, numerical and computer language). Our long-term experience shows that this may have a positive and significant effect on the enhancement of conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts and approaches. This transcends the basic computational uses, and implies a potential for real improvement in the learning success, cognitive motivation and problem solving skills of the student. We illustrate the steps we have taken towards doing this through some examples.
