This study aims to investigate the effects of scientific calculators on mathematics achievement in support of problem-solving instructions. In this study, 49 low achieving mathematics students aged 14 years were selected from a secondary school in Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia. A pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design with two groups was employed in this action research study. The experimental group learned solid geometry and statistics topics, with the aid of a scientific calculator; while the control group did not use any technological aid to learn these topics. By controlling the pre-test score, the ANCOVA two-way test was applied to the post-test results. A positive significant difference was reported in favour of the experimental group. However, no significant interactions were noted between group and gender. The analysis results indicate that the use of a scientific calculator in the integrated teaching and learning of mathematics helped the students improved their mathematics achievements. These findings have important implications in the educational setting, particularly for educators to support and facilitate low-achieving students in mathematics.

AbstractThis article discusses the use of a scientific calculator in teaching calculus by using representations of mathematics notions in different sub-languages (analytical, graphical, symbolical, verbal, numerical and computer language). Our long-term experience shows that this may have a positive and significant effect on the enhancement of conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts and approaches. This transcends the basic computational uses, and implies a potential for real improvement in the learning success, cognitive motivation and problem solving skills of the student. We illustrate the steps we have taken towards doing this through some examples.

AbstractThere are standard computational and statistical techniques of forecasting the spread pattern of a pandemic. In this article, we are going to show how close the forecasts can be if we use a simple numerical approach that can be worked out using just a scientific calculator. Using a few recent data, short term forecasts can be found very easily. In this numerical technique, we need not make any assumptions, unlike in the cases of using computational and statistical methods. Such numerical forecasts would be nearly perfect unless the pandemic suddenly starts retarding during the period of the forecasts naturally or otherwise.

This study aims to explain the procedural fluency of students in numerical methods courses. Procedural fluency refers to knowledge of procedures, about when and how to use them appropriately, and the skills to carry out procedures flexibly, accurately, and efficiently. The method in this study uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach and data analysis techniques for the Miles and Huberman models. In this study also performed triangulation of techniques by conducting interviews to strengthen the test result data. From the data analysis, it can be concluded that regarding the smoothness in students' procedural procedures in solving problems related to numerical methods courses, students are able to solve problems with more than one method. However, some students have not been able to streamline steps and make accurate calculations. In addition, mastery in operating a scientific calculator needs to be improved so that students can be more efficient and get more accurate answers.

It was carried out in a class of students in the 3rd year, through the use of a semistructured interview and six sessions of mathematical classroom problem resolution. The results point to the non-use of the calculator in the classroom, by the mathematics teacher in the class under study. Students found that using the calculator causes them to unlearn their handwritten calculations and become dependent on the calculator. We hope that this work contributes to the discussion around the subject and can, in this way, improve the quality of teaching / learning in Mathematics.

Keywords: Scientific calculator. THIS -- paper examines the rubu 'mujayyab as a classical instrument and the work of ulama archipelago. Rubu 'mujayyab keeps the scientific treasures as the primary reference for the development of advanced Islamic astronomical tools. The methodology used in rubu 'mujayyab is the science of a spherical triangle connected with the concept of the earth round. Urgency rubu 'mujayyab in Islamic tradition is as a measuring tool one of them is to determine the distance and altitude. Rukyat al-hilal and the direction of Qiblah is one part that can be measured by rubu 'mujayyab. With the base of the surface point of the earth can be expressed in two coordinates, namely longitude and latitude. Through this paper submitted that rubu 'mujayyab as a measuring instrument of rukyat al-hilal and direction of Qiblah in his time is an accurate and precise tool. However, after a study with contemporary tools the calculation of rubu 'mujayyab did not reach the minute scale. In the process of calculation also requires a long process, because there are several steps that must be taken. Meanwhile, calculations using the scientific calculator method can include data processed with a formula that can produce high accuracy calculations. Yet the spirit of Islamic archipelago in the development of scientific treasures through rubu 'mujayyab still must be preserved.
