A la luz de la importancia de la actividad física regular como un elemento clave en la prevención de muchas enfermedades, se reportan a continuación los resultados del estudio realizado con un aparato para ejercitarse en la casa. 22 estudiantes universitarios jóvenes, aparentemente saludables, participaron en el estudio. Se midió el efecto agudo de 10 minutos de ejercicio con el dispositivo sobre la frecuencia cardíaca, el costo energético y la circulación periférica en las piernas. Se contrastan los resultados obtenidos con las afirmaciones que se hacen en distintas versiones de publicidad del aparato en cuestión. No se obtuvieron efectos fisiológicos agudos significativos de la utilización del dispositivo durante 10 minutos continuos: la frecuencia cardíaca aumentó apenas 8 latidos por minuto con respecto al reposo y la temperatura cutánea no varió o más bien disminuyó. El costo energético no fue significativamente mayor mientras se usaba el dispositivo en comparación con la condición de reposo. Estos resultados sugieren que aquellas personas que utilicen este dispositivo en sustitución de la actividad física regular estarán sacrificando beneficios importantes para su salud.  Abstract. The importance of doing regular physical activity (exercise) as a key element in the prevention of several diseases is well known. The following experiment was performed to evaluate the acute physiological effects of a home-exercise machine on 22 young, apparently healthy, university students. While the individuals exercised in the machine for ten (10) minutes, measures of heart rate, energy expenditure and peripheral circulation to the legs were taken and recorded. The results were contrasted against the claims made in different ads promoting the selected apparatus. There were no significant acute physiological effects resulting from the utilization of the machine during a 10-minute period. Heart rate increased only 8 beats per minute (bpm) from baseline and the temperature measured on the legs showed no variation or was even reduced. Energy expenditure was not significantly higher while using the device in comparison with the resting condition. These results suggest that consumers using this home-exercise equipment as a substitute of performing regular physical activity will be sacrificing important health benefits.

AbstractObjective:To assess weight status and eating habits of undergraduate university students in relation to gender and examine the relationships between weight status, physical activity and eating habits.Design:Cross-sectional study conducted between October 2016 and May 2017.Setting:Young adults in Midwest Brazil.Participants:Undergraduate university students (n 2163) majoring in health care.Results:Among 2163 students, 69·3 % were female, 65·4 % were aged 20–29 years, 66·8% consumed alcohol and 44·2% did not achieve more than 150 min of physical activity per week. We found significant differences in the consumption of beans (P < 0·04) and full-fat milk (P < 0·01) between women and men. Women also had more sedentary lifestyles (P < 0·01) and showed higher prevalence of overweight (33·8 %) and obesity (5·0 %) than men. Students who did not engage in physical activity were more overweight (P = 0·03), consumed more soft drinks (P < 0·01) and meat with excess fat (P = 0·01). There was a positive association between weight status and fruit (P = 0·02), salad (P < 0·01), greens/vegetables (P < 0·01) and beans (P < 0·01) intake.Conclusions:The low level of physical activity and unhealthy eating patterns reported by the study participants were inconsistent with the national recommendations for a healthy active lifestyle for adults and may contribute to the increasing rate of overweight and obesity in this population. A joint effort between universities and all relevant government agencies is needed to develop and promote school- and community-based interventions.

BACKGROUND Promoting physical activity for adolescence is a global challenge in public health. Physical inactivity and sedentary behaviors have been regarded to cause harmful chronic diseases to adolescent lifespan. However, high engagement in mobile technology for students may provide opportunities to help change adolescent unhealthy behaviors. Therefore, school sectors may play an important key role, such as implementing mobile health (mHealth) intervention to change students’ unhealthy behaviors and promote regular physical exercise behaviors, especially during the transition from adolescence to young adult. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore university students’ daily exercise patterns upon intervention of school-based mHealth project. METHODS Students’ physical exercise participation was recorded with students’ mobile application. With 4152 university freshmen (1476 males, 2676 females) and 335898 of their exercise records were analyzed (mean frequency of 38.2 ±16.10 in males, 45.1±10.81 in females) during the semester. RESULTS Under the school intervention project, students that exercised on Friday and Saturday was lower than that on other days, which indicated that the participation in exercise were more active on weekdays than on weekends. Among the participants who completed the requirement set by the school intervention project, both males and females used weekends to do exercise. On the other hand, overweight male university students participated in physical activity more than the requirement of the school intervention project and their exercise duration were found to be significantly higher than other participants. CONCLUSIONS Understanding a week of daily exercise patterns among youth upon the school mHealth Apps intervention can benefit in developing efficient and flexible projects to promote physical health and improve regular exercise participation in youth.
