Free-surface effects on the hydrodynamic coefficients of a laterally oscillating slender body at forward speed

The radiation-diffraction potential of a ship advancing in waves is studied using the three-dimensional frequency-domain forward-speed free-surface Green function (Brard 1948) and the forward-speed Green integral equation (Hong 2000). Numerical solutions are obtained by making use of a second-order inner collocation boundary element method which makes it possible to take account of the line integral along the waterline in a rigorous manner (Hong et al. 2008). The present forward-speed Green integral equation includes not only the usual free surface condition for the potential but also the adjoint free surface condition for the forward-speed free-surface Green function as indicated by Brard (1972). Comparison of the present numerical results of the heave-heave wave damping coefficients and the experimental results for the Wigley ship models I, II and III (Journee 1992) has been presented. These coefficients are compared with those calculated without taking into account of the line integral along the waterline in order to show the forward speed effect represented by the waterline integral when it is properly included in the free-surface Green integral equation. Comparison of the present numerical results and the equivalent time-domain results (Hong et al. 2013) has also been presented.

Abstract. Surface-piercing propellers have been widely used in light and high-speed vessels because of their superior performance. Experimental study of these propellers is one of the most reliable and accurate ways which can provide details about the performance and effect of different design parameters on the performance of the surface-piercing propellers. In this research, a five-blade surface-piercing propeller was tested in the free surface water tunnel of Babol Noshirvani University of Technology in order to expand the available experimental data and database for future engineering designs. The effects of immersion ratio and shaft inclination angle on the propeller's efficiency and hydrodynamic coefficients were examined. A free surface water tunnel and a calibrated dynamometer with the measurability of the thrust forces and the torque of a propeller were used for this purpose. Comparing the obtained results with the existing semi-experimental equations shows that the equations presented in various geometric conditions are not accurate enough, and developing the existing database is necessary. The details of the obtained results showed that the hydrodynamic coefficients of the thrust and torque increased by increasing the immersion ratio, but the coefficient of hydrodynamic thrust and efficiency reduced. The results also indicated that the coefficient of torque increased by increasing the shaft inclination angle. The highest efficiency of the propeller was achieved in the range of 40 %–50 % immersion ratios at all angles of shaft inclination. For all immersion ratios, the maximum and minimum efficiencies were obtained at 0 and 15 shaft inclination angles, respectively. The best efficiency of the propeller was at 50 % immersion ratio and zero shaft inclination angle.

A neutrally buoyant slender body of arbitrary sectional form, submerged beneath a free surface, is free to respond to an incident plane progressive wave system. The fluid is assumed inviscid, incompressible, homogeneous and infinitely deep. The first-order oscillatory motion of the body and the second-order time-average vertical force and pitching moment acting on the body are obtained in terms of Kochin's function. By use of slender-body theory for a deeply submerged body, the final expressions for the mean force and the moment are shown to depend on the longitudinal distribution of sectional area and added mass and on the amplitude and the frequency of the ambient surface waves. The magnitude of the mean force for various simple geometric cylinders is compared with that of a circular cylinder of equal cross-sectional area. The mean force on a nonaxisymmetric body is often approximated by replacing the section with circular profiles of equivalent cross-sectional area. A better scheme of approximation is presented, based on a simple way of estimating the two-dimensional added mass. It is expected that the effect of the cross-sectional geometry on mean vertical force and moment will be more significant when the body is very close to the free surface.

The hydrodynamic interaction of two bodies floating in waves is studied. The two-body hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass, wave damping and exciting forces and moments are calculated using the irregular frequency free radiation-diffraction potential solution of the improved Green integral equation associated with the free surface Green function (Hong 1987) according to the conventional two-body analysis. It is well known that the conventional two-body potential solution with usual grid fineness largely overestimates the hydrodynamic coefficients at and near the resonance frequency of the free surface in the gap between two floating bodies moored side-by-side in close proximity (Huijsmans et al. 2001, Hong et al. 2005). The two-body diffraction problem has been solved by both the conventional two-body analysis without damped free surface condition and a boundary matching method with and without damped free surface condition. Numerical results of the wave exciting force coefficients of two identical caissons floating side by side obtained by the two methods have been presented and the discrepancies between them have been discussed. Particular attention is paid to the wave elevation in the gap at the resonance frequencies. Amplitudes and phases of the scattering wave elevations in the gap at the first three free surface resonance frequencies computed by the boundary matching method without damped free surface condition have been presented. It has also been shown that the unrealistic wave elevation due to the resonance of the free surface in the gap can be reduced by imposing the damped free surface condition upon the flow in the gap as used in the oscillating water column hydrodynamics (Hong et al. 2004).

Three-dimensional, time-domain, wave-body interactions are studied in this paper for cases with and without forward speed. In the present approach, an exact body boundary condition and linearized free surface boundary conditions are used. By distributing desingularized sources above the calm water surface and using constant-strength panels on the exact submerged body surface, the boundary integral equations are solved numerically at each time step. Once the fluid velocities on the free surface are computed, the free surface elevation and potential are updated by integrating the free surface boundary conditions. After each time step, the body surface and free surface are regrided due to the instantaneous changing submerged body geometry. The desingularized method applied on the free surface produces non-singular kernels in the integral equations by moving the fundamental singularities a small distance outside of the fluid domain. Constant strength panels are used for bodies with any arbitrary shape. Extensive results are presented to validate the efficiency of the present method. These results include the added mass and damping computations for a hemisphere. The calm water wave resistance for a submerged spheroid and a Wigley hull are also presented. All the computations with forward speed are started from rest and proceed until a steady state is reached. Finally, the time-domain forced motion results for a modified Wigley hull with forward speed are shown and compared with the experiments for both linear computations and body-exact computations.

Effects of free surface on development of turbulent boundary layer and wake fields were investigated. By measuring flow field around a surface piercing cylinder in various advance speed conditions in a towing tank, free surface effects were identified. A towed underwater Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system was used to measure the flow field under free surface. The cross section of the test model was water plane shape of the Wigley hull, of which longitudinal length and width were 1.0 m and 100 mm, respectively. With sharp bow shape and slender cross section, flow separation was not expected in two-dimensional flow. Flow fields near the free-surface and in deep location that two-dimensional flow field was expected were measured and compared to identify free-surface effects. Some planes perpendicular to longitudinal direction near the model surface and behind the model were selected to track development of turbulent boundary layer. Froude numbers of the test conditions were from 0.126 to 0.40 and corresponding Reynolds numbers were from 395,000 to 1,250,000. In the lowest Froude number condition, free-surface wave was hardly observed and only free surface effects without surface wave could be identified while violent free-surface behavior due to wave-induced separation dominated the flow fields in the highest Froude number condition. From the instantaneous velocity fields, Time-mean velocity, turbulence kinetic energy, and flow structure derived by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) were analyzed. As the free-surface effect, development of retarded wake, free-surface waves, and wave-induced separation were mainly observed.
