Abstract. The purpose of the study is to analyze the pedigree core of the Akhal-Teke breed bred in the Stavropol Territory using the example of the leading breeding farm LLC “Stavropol stud farm No. 170”. The object of the study was stud stallions (n = 5) and brood mares (n = 30) of the thoroughbred Akhal-Teke breed. Information sources of research: statements of results of assessment of pedigree horses, catalogs of stallions-producers, state studbooks of Akhal-Teke horses, data from the information retrieval system HORSES-3. Results and scope of application. The stallions-producers of the Akhal-Teke breed used in the LLC “Stavropol stud farm No. 170” belong to 4 lines: El, Posman, Gelishikli and Fakirpelvan. According to the direct male line, all mares of the breeding core belong to 6 lines: Gelishikli (36.7 %), El (23.3 %), Gaplan (16.7 %), Posman (13.3 %), Fakirpelvan (6.7 %) and Sere (3.3 %). Zootechnical assessment of breeding stallions and mares of the breeding core showed their compliance with the breed standard. The average age of breeding stallions is 18 years, and broodmares – 11.7 years. The research results can be recommended as an educational material for students and undergraduates of universities studying in the areas of zootechnical profile training, and can also be used in the practical work of zootechnicians of breeding farms and private individuals engaged in breeding Akhal-Teke horses. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time a detailed genealogical and zootechnical assessment of the breeding nucleus of the Akhal-Teke horses bred in the Stavropol Territory has been given.

The relationship between theory and explanation in informa tion retrieval research is analysed. Problems in the development of a generalisable information retrieval theory from informa tion retrieval experiment and the associated mathematical mod elling is examined. The source of these problems is traced back to assumptions underlying information retrieval research, and to the nature of the relationship between the theoretical frame work of information retrieval research and the nature of the problems on which this framework is brought to bear. Particu lar attention is directed to problems in measurement, in estab lishing a significant relationship between test results and results from operational evaluations, and in establishing a connection between the situational and behavioural assumptions employed in information retrieval research and real situations and be haviour. The attempt to develop information retrieval research as an experimental science akin to natural science or engineering, around the notion of the quantification of relevance is miscon ceived. In order for information retrieval research to break out of the limitations of its present theoretical framework, and of the backwater to which that framework has led, a reorientation is required. The argument of this paper is that information retrieval research needs to be reoriented from a focus on the information retrieval system and on supposed 'systemic' factors to an orientation to the user and the user's interaction with information sources.

The development of technology and information has led to the emergence of many media that can be used as information sources, including social media. Twitter has started an automatic base (autobase) system with has automenfess feature. This study aims to see the level of users' ability and the use of autobase as an information retrieval system. Respondents were users or followers of the @collegemenfess Twitter account. This study used a quantitative approach with descriptive analysis. The data were obtained through an online survey of 70 followers of the @collegemenfess account. The study found that users' ability level was in the intermediate user category and the use of information retrieval system on this autobase was to send messages with a certain format which then that message will be a confession mention.

Having in mind today's growth of information sources, both in terms of their number and of their size, whether we are referring to the Internet, a corporate intranet, or a library information retrieval system, we can say that manipulating information is not a trivial task. The user is not often being catered for in distributed information systems. He/ she seems to be interacting with systems that do not recognize his/her uniqueness and thus do not offer an individualized treatment. As a result, User Modeling is a core, essential factor in achieving personalization. We present here an intelligent way of inferring user related information that is not available, a situation that is very likely to occur due to sparseness of relevant data. This method can be very useful in recommender systems and this is illustrated with an example.

The selection and implementation of an information retri eval software package in a small pharmaceutical information unit is described. Its initial application to the unit's product complaints system is outlined together with other current and proposed developments. These include a database of the slide collection and an index of information sources available in the library. The manner in which some of the information unit's reporting procedures have been rationalised is also discussed.
