This qualitative inquiry examined eighty-one transcribed student and teacher discussions and interviews and researcher field notes to determine the type of talk that occurred as the teacher invited small groups of students to take part in dialogue prompted by literature. Four themes emerged from the data: teacher's knowledge, processing time, various forms of scaffolding, and oral rubrics. During in-depth analysis of ten selected transcripts, additional themes of the nature of critical talk emerged. First, students explored critical concepts such as recognizing a need for action, becoming aware of injustices, and challenging the status quo. Also, student talk scaled the ladder of abstraction, offering concrete examples that made their discussions more applicable to their lives, while at the same time traveling up the ladder, abstracting the is sues to begin to explore larger more systemic causes of particular injustices. Second, some students believed that they were changed by the interactions while others felt as if they had gained new understandings of particular concepts, issues, or beliefs. A continuum of the type of student talk shows how students' talk moves among social talk, fundamental text talk, socio-interpretive text talk,critical talk, and critical conversations. As students traverse along the continuum, various needs can be met. As teachers recognize where students' talk is on the continuum, they can lead students to deeper literature study discussions. In order to help students take a more critical approach when discussing texts, teachers must scaffold the talk and provide the time for students to grapple with critical concepts.

<p>Representation of Immigrants in New Zealand Print Media: A Critical Discourse Analysis  New Zealand is often perceived as one of the most diverse countries in terms of its population, with “more ethnicities in New Zealand than there are countries in the world” (Statistics New Zealand, 2013). According to the 2013 census, 39% of people who live in Auckland, New Zealand’s most immigrant-populated city, were born overseas. In such a setting, the issue of social harmony becomes important. Media institutions hold power and therefore their representations play a significant role in how immigrants are perceived and whether they are embraced and welcomed or resisted. It is for this reason that media discourse deserves attention.  Research in this area in the context of New Zealand has been limited and furthermore has leaned towards content analysis or a purely qualitative analysis of a specific diaspora. Addressing these issues, my research aims to gain a better understanding of how immigrants are discursively constructed in the New Zealand Herald newspaper during the years 2007 and 2008. Given that the Global Financial Crisis began to make its presence felt in 2008, this study also sought to investigate expected discrepancies in the representation of immigrants during economically challenging times.  Grounded within a critical approach, this study adopts methodic triangulation; that is, the data is analysed using two complementary analytical frameworks, namely that of corpus-assisted discourse analysis (Baker, KhosraviNik, Krzyzanowski, McEnery, & Wodak, 2008) and the Discourse-Historical Approach (Reisigl & Wodak, 2009). Using these two frameworks, I use statistical information as entry points into the data and explore significant collocations which contribute to the construction of dominant representations. This analysis is followed by an in-depth analysis of systematically sampled news articles with the aim of identifying the ii various discursive and argumentation strategies commonly employed in print media.  The findings from both analyses point to a rather ambivalent representation of immigrants. On the one hand, immigrants are constructed as being qualified and playing an important role in filling skill shortages in New Zealand. This positive construction depicts immigrants as an economic resource which ought to be capitalized. In addition, liquid metaphors, previously argued to dehumanize immigrants and construct them as uncontrollable (KhosraviNik, 2009) are surprisingly used in my data to construct the immigration of large numbers of immigrants to New Zealand as essential. On the other hand, immigrants are also constructed as threateningly Other or passive victims. Therefore, immigrants are not only constructed as beneficial to New Zealand society but are also represented as being problematic.  This study identifies a unique representation of immigrants in the New Zealand Herald which could perhaps be explained by the unique socio-political and geographical context of the country. The triangulation and methodic rigour of this study also ensure that the findings are generalizable to the whole dataset and contribute to current understandings of immigrant representation and approaches to the study of discourse and representation.</p>

The phenomenon of paddy fields conversion in Kampar Regency which continues to increase from year to year had caused decreasing paddy fields area and threatening food supply capacity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the index and the status of the sustainability of control over the paddy fields conversion and to find out the sensitive attributes of the sustainability of control over the paddy fields conversion in Tambang Sub-District, Kampar Regency. This research was conducted in Aur Sati Village, Balam Jaya Village and Pulau Permai Village, Tambang Sub-District, Kampar Regency from October 2020 to January 2021. The method used was the survey method with a quantitative approach. The sampel of farmers in this study were 88 people who were selected by purposive sampling. Data collection was done by observation, interviews, and literature study. This study used questionnaires as an instrument to collect data.  The analytical method used in this research was the sustainability analysis carried out with the Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis approach with the Rap-Paddy Field tool which has been modified from Rapfish program. The results showed that the control of the paddy fields conversion in Aur Sati Village has been going very well, this can be seen from the sustainability index value of each dimension in the range of 52.4 - 83.9% (fairly - highly sustainable). On the other hand, the sustainability index value of each dimension in Balam Jaya Village ranges from 35.9 - 48.2% (less sustainable), this showed that paddy fields conversion in this village has not been well controlled. While in Pulau Permai Village, the economic dimension had a sustainability index value of 48.2% (less sustainable) and there were 2 (two) dimensions that were classified as fairly sustainable, namely the ecological dimension of 64.4% and the social dimension of 52.3%. These data provided information that the control of paddy fields conversion in Pulau Permai Village is still ecologically and socially oriented, and ignores the economic dimension. There were sensitive attributes that need to be given top priority in planning the sustainability of control over the paddy fields conversion in Tambang Sub-District, Kampar Regency, namely price stability, product markets, traditional leaders, cultivation techniques and availability of RTRW.

This article will discuss the hadith narratives of a person who is considered an expert bid'ah and Imam al-Bukha> ri> load it into the book al-S}ah}i>h}. Using the literature study, this article found that among the hereditary experts contained in S{ah{i>h} al-Bukha>ri is the one named 'Abd al-H{ami>d bin ‘Abd al-Rah}ma>n al-H{imma>ni> indicated includes the Murji'ah group and the scholars differing in their views on the status of the heresy experts, some of them claiming to reject the heresy of the heresy because the requirements of the hadith s}ah}i>h} are not fulfilled that is in the 'adl aspect. Some other scholars see that it can be accepted by bid'ah expert transmission with a condition; rawi do not include people who are considered to lie and transmission does not have a motive for heresy. Then this paper will discuss the transmitter named 'Abd al-H{ami>d bin 'Abd al-Rah}ma>n al-H{imma>ni and his transmission in the book al-S}ah}i>h} accordingly with the concept of assessment of heresy experts.

Although the life sciences curriculum asks for the inclusion of indigenous knowledge systems in the classroom, it is either done very superficially by only providing an example or two, or ignored completely. This mixed-methods study (with emphasis on the qualitative inquiry) on the status of indigenous knowledge in the life sciences classroom in Gauteng and Limpopo, once again echoed what Rogan and Grayston (2003) reported: the South African curriculum process focuses too much on the what (the curriculum itself) at the expense of the how (the implementation of the curriculum). Although the progressive curriculum makes it clear that indigenous knowledge should be addressed, it provides very little guidance to teachers on how this should be done. Two problems are highlighted in this article: teachers’ lack of pedagogical content knowledge in addressing indigenous knowledge systems, as well as their poor understanding of the nature of science. A teacher’s social responsibility also entails making learners aware of the cultural and practical value of indigenous knowledge, and stimulating learners’ interest in scientific fields such as ethnobotany and chemotaxonomy.

Technological developments in medicine have provided an outlet for community issues with the discovery of a new method of artificial insemination is known as in vitro fertilitization (IVF). For couples who want to have children but due to medical reasons can not obtain offspring naturally, with IVF method can obtain offspring / children. But in its development appears IVF lease term or the surrogate mother's womb, the sperm and ovum from a legitimate married another woman entered in the womb. Therefore the aim of this study to determine the legal position of surrogacy agreement as an innominaat agreement in the perspective of civil law, Islamic law national law, This research used normative juridical approach, descriptive analytical research specification, method of data collection is done with a literature study on legal materials, both primary legal materials, as well as secondary materials, then analyzed by qualitative descriptive. The results showed that a good legal position surrogacy agreement according to the Civil Law, Islamic law and national law is as the agreement is not named (innominaat) and surrogacy agreement is not allowed or unlawful. While the legal consequences of surrogacy agreements either under Civil Law, Islamic law, and national law relating to the status of children, descent problems, inheritance and other rights. The legal status of children under civil law can be a legitimate child of the surrogate mother, it could be a child outside of mating recognized, while according to Islamic law status of the child as a child of the uterus rental yields laqith, while according to national law, the legal status of the child as a foster child. This inheritance rights issue depends the legal status of the child, there is nothing not inherit (civil relationship with his mother).

This article seeks, mainly, to develop a critical approach to the problem of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and, through this, to rethink the problem of activism and militancy in relation to the power of a symptom linked to a corporality that seems to overflow a determined moral political framework. For this reason, we seek to think of a militancy that intensifies error, as a political power, beyond the search for a specific and universal diagnostic associated with what is understood as evidence. We begin with the description of the emergence of what we have called the ADHD Situation. First, using field notes from a collective ethnographic investigation performed during 2017, we describe the ADHD Situation as an ongoing process. Then we connect it to a broader context by examining the role of the school in contemporary Chilean neoliberal society from a genealogical-affective approximation, trying to avoid substantializing readings. In the second section, we develop this connection, describing the production of the ADHD Situation through the lenses of epistemology, ethics, economics, and politics. We also use here a critical analysis of three key documents that help us chart the institutional development of the disorder: The National Mental Health Plan (2017), the National Children’s Health Program (2015) and the Clinical Guide to Attention Deficit (2009). We demonstrate the existence of an epistemological connivance between macrosocial transformations and the community approach utilized in these documents. This provokes us to think about a militancy capable of trespassing the borders of academia, health definitions, and social interventions through the intensification of the power of error as an opening to radical transformations.

The chapter first defines the status of the diagram that underlies Schizoanalytic Cartographies as a formal diagram of an informal world. As such, it is itself a figure of the various complementarities that are defined within it. Using foldings of the diagram to organize the text, the chapter subsequently provides an in-depth analysis of the relations between and the superpositions of its four functors: Flows, Phyla, Territories and Universes. Next, it presents the diagram’s inherently ecological parameters. By way of tracing the vectors between its various positions, it defines the diagram as a meta-model of the expressive relation between the world and its creatures. After showing Guattari’s recalibration of the distinction between smooth and striated space, it exemplifies the notion of an expressive ecology in four sections that perform the squaring of concepts (chlorophyll), of the unconscious (Lacan), of aesthetics (Balthus) and of media studies (the analog and digital divide).

This chapter considers the status of geometrical and kinematic representations in the foundations of 18th century analysis and in Kant’s understanding of those foundations. It has two aims. First, relying on relatively recent reassessments of the history of analysis, it will attempt to bring forward a more accurate account of intuitive representation in 18th century analysis and the relation between British and Continental mathematics. Second, it will give a better account of Kant’s place in that history. The result shows that although Kant did no better at navigating the labyrinth of the continuum than his contemporaries, he had a more interesting and reasonable account of the foundations of analysis than an easy reading of either Kant or that history provides. It also permits a more accurate and interesting account of how and when a conception of foundations of analysis without intuitive representations emerged, and how that paved the way for Bolzano and Cauchy.

Critical service learning (CSL), social and emotional learning (SEL), and positive youth development (PYD) represent key elements for promot¬ing healthy attitudes and behaviors among youth. This chapter explains each component and provides a theoretical overview. As mentioned in Chapter 1, CSL represents a therapeutic strategy that encompasses a philosophy of youth empowerment. CSL emphasizes youth becoming empowered to view themselves in relation to others, as partners, to bring about change in their environment. Mitchell (2008) defined CSL as an approach that challenges youth to become self-aware of how their own situations influence their relationships within their community. When these relationships are based on the concerns of the community, they can facilitate CSL through the examination of issues of power, privilege, and oppression— and disparaging assumptions of class, gender, and race— and then take action to address unjust and inequitable social and economic systems (Cipolle, 2010). Youth engage in critical thinking about the problems they face within their own communities and are encouraged to take action. The critical approach to service learning promotes social justice and challenges the status quo. The approach to CSL involves three key elements: “working to redistribute power amongst all participants in the service learning relationship, developing authentic relationships in the classroom and in the community and working from a social change perspective” (Mitchell, 2008, p. 50). The goal of CSL is to examine power relations, challenge oppressive institutions, and cultivate in youth the power to take action. In our model, the CSL approach presents “student voice” as a necessary component to create a sense of empowerment and authentic engagement. The community web-mapping tool discussed in Chapter 3 serves as the vehicle for students to address social justice issues as they compare and contrast their vision of perfect and imperfect communities (Figure 2.1). Social and emotional learning is a framework that provides opportunities for young people to acquire the skills necessary for maintaining personal well-being and positive relationships across their life span (Elbertson, Brackett, & Weissberg, 2009). The five competency clusters for students are the following: 1. Self- awareness: the ability to accurately recognize one’s emotions and thoughts and how they influence behavior.

The status of lattice calculations of heavy-light decay constants and of the B parameter BB is reviewed. After describing the lattice approach to heavy quark systems, the main results are discussed, with special emphasis on the systematic errors in present lattice calculations. A detailed analysis of the continuum limit for decay constants is performed. The implications of lattice results on studies of CP violation in the Standard Model are discussed.
