One of the most complicated problems of experimental nuclear physics is the synthesis of exotic nuclei near the boundaries of stability. These nuclei, as a rule, are 10 or more neutrons away from stable nuclei, have a short lifetime (less than 1 ms) and low binding energy. All this determines special requirements to the choice of reactions for the synthesis of such nuclei and the method of their transportation and registration. Mainly, for the synthesis of exotic nuclei, reactions of fragmentation of the bombarding heavy ion, direct reactions of the types (p, d) , (d, p) , (d, n) , ( d , 3 He), etc., as well as reactions of fission and deep inelastic transfer are used.

One of the most interesting and intensively examined research directions in nuclear physics, i.e., the production and investigation of exotic nuclei in the vicinity of drip-lines is investigated. An historical overview of the development of research area is provided. Methods to produce such nuclei realized at the foremost research facilities in the world, e.g., CERN in Switzerland and GSI in Germany, are described. The critical change of the nuclear structure on approaching proton and neutron drip-lines, as well as the results of experimental studies of neutron- and proton-rich nuclei, the mechanism of neutron halo formation in neutron-rich isotopes of helium, lithium, beryllium, and boron, are discussed. In addition, medical applications of radioactive beams are discussed briefly.

ABSTRACT The first Van de Graaff particle accelerator in Latin America was installed at the Universidad Nacional Autóónoma de Mééxico (UNAM) in 1952. This event marked the beginning of experimental nuclear physics, exclusively for peaceful purposes, in Mexico. The acquisition of this accelerator was fundamental for placing other accelerators into operation, which were used for both research and the resolution of national problems.

The SPES project at Laboratori di Legnaro of INFN (Italy) is concentrating on the production of neutron-rich radioactive nuclei for nuclear physics experiments using uranium fission at a rate of 1013 fission/s. The emphasis on neutron-rich isotopes is justified by the fact that this vast territory has been little explored. The Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) will be produced by the ISOL technique using proton induced fission on a direct target of UCx. The most critical element of the SPES project is the Multi-Foil Direct Target. Up to the present time, the proposed target represents an innovation in terms of its capability to sustain the primary beam power. This talk will present the status of the project financed by INFN, which is actually in the construction phase at Legnaro. In particular, developments related to the target and the ion-source activities using the surface ion source, plasma ion source, and laser ion source techniques will be reported.

The only existing heavy-ion accelerator in Greece, the 5.5 MV TANDEM at the National Research Center “Demokritos” in Athens has been used to date primarily for investigations centering around nuclear physics. Here, we propose to establish the new (for Greece) discipline of Atomic Physics with Accelerators, a strong field in the EU with important contributions to fusion, hot plasmas, astrophysics, accelerator technology and basic atomic physics of ion-atom collision dynamics, structure and technology. This will be accomplished by combining the existing interdisciplinary atomic collisions expertise from three Greek universities, the strong support of distinguished foreign researchers and the high technical ion-beam know-how of the TANDEM group into a cohesive initiative.Using the technique of Zero-degree Auger Projectile Spectroscopy (ZAPS), we shall complete a much needed systematic isoelectronic investigation of K-Auger spectra emitted from collisions of pre-excited ions with gas targets using novel techniques. Our results are expected to lead to a deeper understanding of the neglected importance of cascade feeding of metastable states [1] in collisions of ions with gas targets and further elucidate their role in the non-statistical production of excited three-electron states by electron capture, recently a field of conflicting interpretations awaiting further resolution.

The light elements and their isotopes were produced during standard big bang nucleosynthesis (SBBN) during the first minutes after the creation of the universe. Comparing the calculated abundances of these light species with observed abundances, it appears that all species match very well except for lithium (7Li) which is overproduced by the SBBN. This discrepancy is rather challenging for several reasons to be considered on astrophysical and on nuclear physics ground, or by invoking nonstandard assumptions which are the focus of this paper. In particular, we consider a variation of the chemical potentials of the neutrinos and their temperature. In addition, we investigated the effect of dark matter on 7Li production. We argue that including nonstandard assumptions can lead to a significant reduction of the 7Li abundance compared to that of SBBN. This aspect of lithium production in the early universe may help to resolve the outstanding cosmological lithium problem.
