EFFECT OF COMBINATION OF TWO PLANTS ON ANTI-OXIDANT ACTIVITY

Anti-oxidants are essential for maintaining optimum health and well being by acting against damage caused by free radicals. Regular consumption of vegetables and fruits with anti-oxidant activity can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of  Psidium guajava and Syzygium cumini leaves individually and as a combination of ethanolic leaf extracts of both in 1:1 ratio. The antioxidant activity of ethanolic leaf extracts of Syzygium cumini and Psidium guajava and its 1:1 combination were determined by different methods such as Superoxide free radical scavenging assay, Hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay and Hydroxyl radical scavenging assay.The 1:1 combination of ethanolic leaf extract of Syzygium cumini and Psidium guajava showed higher antioxidant activity than the individual extracts. Out of the two individual extracts, Syzyium cumini showed more activity than the Psidium guajava extract. A dose dependent increase in activity was found in all methods. The percentage inhibition of combined extract by hydroxyl radical scavenging assay and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay was 72.70 and 76.15 respectively. Superoxide free radical scavenging assay, showed inhibition of 63.5percentage.From the result it is concluded that leaves of both the plants possess anti-oxidant activity and Syzygium cumini exhibited more activity than Psidium guajava. But the combination of both is superior to individual extracts in exhibiting anti-oxidant activity. The results showed the possibility of synergistic or additive effect of combination of ethanolic extracts of Syzygium cumini and Psidium guajava leaves in the ratio 1:1.

To widen aurones applicability in achromatic food and cosmetic applications, a series of dihydroaurones were designed to mimic natural aurones as well as synthetic aurones. Dihydroaurones have been synthesized from the corresponding aurones by hydrogenation. These dihydroaurones and their corresponding aurones were screened for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and tyrosinase enzyme inhibitory activity. Synthesized dihydroaurones (3b-f) displayed superior antioxidant activity in superoxide free radical scavenging assay than the standard gallic acid. Dihydroaurones (3b-f) also exhibited significant tyrosinase enzyme inhibitory activity and two dihydroaurones (3h, 3j) showed promising 5-lipoxygenase inhibitory activity.

  Objective: The flavonoids are a heterogeneous group of plant polyphenols that are endowed with several biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antiviral, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties. They are believed to interfere with the various free radical-producing systems and they also enhance the functions of endogenous antioxidants. The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidant activity of synthesized substituted flavones by various free radical scavenging assays.Methods: The flavones used in the study, 6,3’,4’ - trihydroxy flavones (THF) and 3-hydroxy-6,3’-dimethoxy flavones were synthesized using standard procedures and their antioxidant activity was compared by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, reducing power capacity, superoxide free radical scavenging assay, and 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6- sulphonic acid assay.Results: In the DPPH assay, THF has an inhibitory concentration 50% value of 18.89 μg/ml which was much better than that of standard ascorbic acid which was 26.1 μg/ml. The THF had a much better antioxidant activity in most of the free radical scavenging assays.Conclusion: From the study, it can be seen that the flavones showed significant antioxidant activity that can be used for treatment of various diseases

Lupeol (1) and Stigmasterol (2) were isolated from the crude extracts of the stem bark of Citrus macroptera (Family: Rutaceae) for the first time. The n-hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts were screened in vitro for antioxidant activity using the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. The hot methanol extract showed potential antioxidant activity (IC50: 178.96 μg/ml) whereas the cold methanol and dichloromethane extracts showed moderate activity (IC50: 242.78 μg/ml and 255.78 μg/ml respectively). Mild antioxidant activity was observed with the n-hexane extract of the stem bark of Citrus macroptera (IC50: 422.94 μg/ml). Elaeagnus angustifolia L., a hardwood species in the family of Elaeagnaceae, has long been used as part of traditional medicines to treat various diseases. However, limited study is available on the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of E. angustifolia bark. In this study, we undertook a phytochemical investigation of E. angustifolia bark by gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis. And antioxidant activity of the crude and following soluble fractions of E. angustifolia bark was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. GC-MS investigation of 95% EtOH crude extracts from E. angustifolia bark detected 40 compounds, and DPPH free radical scavenging assay indicated that the bark EtOAc and BuOH soluble fractions exhibited significant antioxidant potential (IC50 values of 12.1 and 12.4 µg/ml, respectively) comparing with α-tocopherol and BHT (IC50 values 12.3 and 13.8 µg/ml, respectively), which were used as positive controls.

A new xanthone, planchoxanthone (1), together with six known compounds, garcinianone A (2), cowanin (3), rubraxanthone (4), β-mangostin (5), dulcisxanthone B (6), and guttiferone Q (7), were isolated from an n-hexane extract of the pericap of Garcinia planchonii. Their structures were elucidated using spectroscopic methods. Antioxidant activity of the isolated compounds was tested using the DPPH free radical scavenging assay.

Background: Medicinal plants represent a rich source of natural anti-oxidants. The traditional medicine involves the use of different plant extracts of bioactive constituents. Ficus benghalensis is a large evergreen tree found throughout India. It is commonly called Banyan tree. It is used in traditional system of medicine like Ayurveda and homoeopathy. Ficus is a huge tropical deciduous or evergreen tree with more than 800 species. Objective: Anti-oxidant effect of ethnomedicinal important plant species Ficus benghalensis (Family-Moraceae) was screened. The aim of this study was to assess the in-vitro potential of methanolic extract of Ficus benghalensis leaves as a natural anti-oxidant. Method: Assessment of in vitro anti-oxidant activity of methanolic leaves extract of Ficus benghalensis was determined by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Results: The methanolic extract of Ficus benghalensis leaves demonstrates a remarkable amount of phenolic content (54 μg/ml of GAE/100gm of extract) by using Folin-ciocalteu reagent. In-vitro anti-oxidant activity of methanolic leaves extract of Ficus benghalensis was determined by DPPH free radical scavenging assay, which showed significant anti-oxidant activity compared to standard anti-oxidant (ascorbic acid). A direct correlation between total phenol and anti-oxidant activity indicates polyphenols are the main anti-oxidants. Conclusion: These findings suggest the excellent medicinal bio-activity of Ficus benghalensis and explain the popularity of this plant in the folk medicine as a remedy for different disorders, thus supporting its folklore application as preventive remedy as an anti-oxidant. The present study shows that Ficus benghalensis leaves have radical scavenging activity and can be considered as good sources of natural anti-oxidants for medicinal and commercial uses. In an effort to obtain new NSAIDs, that act as COX-2 selective inhibitors with simultaneous iNOS inhibition properties and direct antioxidant activity, we designed a series of 8 new compounds bearing the 5-thiazolyl-carbohydrazon-N-allyl-thiazoline scaffold. The synthesized compounds were physicochemically characterized by: 1H-NMR, MS and elemental analysis. An initial, in vitro, free radical scavenging assay (DPPH bleaching) test showed that most compounds are superior to standard antioxidants Trolox and BHT.

Bergenia ciliata is an essential medicinal plant used in regions where western medicines are inaccessible due to their unavailability and high cost. The methanolic extract of Bergenia ciliataroots was separated for phytochemical elements and in-vitro antioxidant activity. The plant extract showed the rich outgrowth of secondary metabolites that play the role for biological activities. The higher antioxidant functioning of the plant is due to the occurrence of reactive elements like phenols and flavonoids. The antioxidant functioning of the plant extract was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay the IC50 value of Bergenia ciliata was found to be 11.21μg/mL, while the IC50 value of standard ascorbic acid was found to be 45.93μg/mL
