scholarly journals An Assessment Instrument of Product versus Process Writing Instruction: A Rasch Measurement Analysis

Recent researchers continuously stress on the importance of writing instruction in language learning. Therefore, there is an immense need to have an appropriate instrument to measure the writing instruction and the instrument has to be fully tested for validity. Therefore, we developed and validated an instrument using Rasch Measurement Model to assess two prominent approaches (product approach versus process approach) used in writing instruction contemporarily. We tested the instrument by computing its infit, outfit, item reliability, item separation, item difficulty and item discrimination. The results demonstrated that the instrument showed adequate estimates of reliability in assessing both the approaches used by teachers in ESL classrooms. The raw variance result showed that the accuracy of the items of product approach (85.7%) and process approach (63.7%) were excellent and good. The values of item reliability and item separation for product approach were 0.98 and 6.33, while process approach showed the item reliability and separation values of 0.65 and 1.37 respectively. The results showed that product approach is being dominantly practised that did not enhance students’ writing skills in the long run. To address this issue, we propose a new framework for writing instruction as a guide to ESL teachers.

Government incentive is one of the significant factors that influence the compliance behavior of zakat. However, studies which have focused on government incentive such as zakat deduction and compliance behavior of zakat particularly in business zakat scenario is only next to inexistence. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether the government incentives influence compliance behavior of business zakat among owners of SMEs.A total of 276 questionnaires collected from Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) in Selangor and were analyzed using Rasch Measurement Model. The construct is found reliable with Cronbach Alpha of 0.60, person reliability index at 0.65 and item reliability index at 0.98. The statistical indicators such as mean square (MNSQ), Z- standardized (ZSTD), point measure correlation (PtMeaCorr) and Person Item Distribution Map (PIDM) revealed that out of the 247 respondents, 107 respondents (43.3%) who comply with business zakat payment were influenced by government incentives and 140 respondents (56.7%) who did not comply with business zakat payment probably are not influenced by government incentives. The finding of his study implies the significance of Rasch Measurement Model in explaining the compliance behavior of zakat among SMEs. Specifically, this study finds that government incentive is not influence the decision of owners on SMEs community to comply with business zakat payment.

The purpose of this study was to develop and describe the quality and characteristics of an assessment instrument of by name of Qirāatul Kutub. This development research is based on Borg & Gall model. The steps of the development were (1) planning, (2) primary developing product, (3) preliminary field testing, (4) main field testing, and (5) final product revision. The subjects for preliminary field testing were 28 testees for performance test instrument and 96 testees for grammar mastery test derived from students of Darul Huda Islamic Boarding School, whereas the subjects for main field testing were 80 students for performance test instrument and 425 students for grammar mastery test. The research instruments were assessment instrument of Qirāatul Kutub which consisted of performance assessment instrument and grammar mastery essay test, observation and interview guide. The research data were analyzed based on Rasch Model. The results showed that: (1) the results of the development were 12 items of the performance test and 17 items of the grammar mastery test which were fit with the proposed model, (2) the item difficulty of the performance test ranged from -1.32 to 0.99, while for the grammar mastery test from -1.13 to 1.01; (3) the person reliability for the performance test was 0.86, item reliability was 0.97, and Cronbach’s alpha value was 0.97. The grammar mastery test has person reliability 0.97 and item reliability 0.99 with Cronbach’s alpha 0.90; (4) based on the test information function (TIF) and Standard Error of Measurement (SEM), the instruments were found to be good; the performance test and the grammar mastery test were suitable for learners with ability masteries between -4 and 4.

This preliminary study was conducted to examine and verify the validity and reliability of the instrument on the Malaysian Academician Happiness Index (MAHI) on resilience. MAHI could be seen as a tool to measure the level of happiness and stress of academicians before determining how resilient the academicians were. Resilience can be defined as a mental ability of a person to recover quickly from illness or depression. MAHI instrument consisted of 66 items. The instrument was distributed to 40 academicians from three groups of universities which were the Focus University, Comprehensive University and Research University is using a survey technique. The instrument was developed to measure three main constructs which were the organization, individual and social that would affect the happiness and stress levels of academicians. This preliminary study employed the Rasch Measurement Model uses Winsteps software version 3.69.1.11. to examine the validity and reliability of the items. The results of the analysis of the MAHI instrument showed that the item reliability was 0.87, person reliability was 0.83 and value of Alpha Cronbach was 0.84. Meanwhile, misfit analysis showed that only there was one item with 1.46 logit that could be considered for dropping or needed improvement. Therefore, it highlighted that most of the items met the constructs’ need and can be used as a measurement indicator of MAHI. The implication of this instrument can help Malaysian academicians to be more resilient in facing challenges in the future.

English as a second language (ESL) writing instructions demand a great deal of the teachers’ time and effort to prepare adequate writing lessons for their students. Teachers have to decide on the right approach to be selected as the instructional method to enhance students’ writing ability. Thus, this study investigates the preferred teaching practices (between the product and process approach) of 10 pre-service teachers’ in teaching writing and the effects on students’ written texts. The data were collected from observations, semi-structured interviews and students’ written texts. The data from the observation checklists were analyzed using Rasch Measurement Model which validated the study with a high value of alpha Cronbach (0.81). Thematic and textual analyses were conducted on participants’ views and the students’ written text respectively. The findings highlighted the pre-service teachers preferred to employ product approach as their main writing instruction where the students were found to prepare their written work based on the input provided to them. The students’ written work with linguistic accuracy was mainly focused but the students did not show much creatively. Thus, this study recommends that teachers should integrate process approach strategies into their writing instructions to enhance students’ writing more profoundly in the future.

This pilot study illustrates the use of a Rasch measurement model to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Diabetes Self Care Scale (DSCS). A convenience sample of 50 adults with diabetes at two local hospitals (one for profit and one public) in southern Louisiana responded to the survey questions. The instrument is comprised of 27 items and 6 rating categories. The Bigsteps Rasch measurement software was used for all analyses. Results indicated that respondent separation reliability was low (0.63), but item separation reliability was satisfactory (0.91). Internal validity was supported. Twenty-six items measure a single construct of diabetes self care. Construct validity was supported by the meaningfulness of the item difficulty order and by the consistency of that order across respondents. Rating scale analysis revealed that middle categories were not distinct steps in the progression of increasing diabetes self care. In addition to deleting an item producing inconsistent responses and combining adjacent categories (categories 1 and 2, and categories 3, 4, and 5), four recommendations for future research are provided.
