Before 1918 it was used by the then still undivided duchy. The basic purpose of the research is the critical review and supplementation of the currently already known facts, discovered by the Austrian historians of the past. The very first beginnings of the Styrian coat of arms with the (white or. silver) panther (on a green base) can be traced back to the 12th century. This symbol obviously did not have its origins with the noble house of Bamberg. Its motive is clearly much older. The present coat of arms became established by the 13th century. Considering the sources of that time, what we have in mind are mostly seals on contemporary documents, together with the first descriptions in narrative sources. Here we mean the so-called Austrian Rhyme Chronicle.

Category: 1.01 Original scientific paper Language: Original in Slovenian (Abstract in Slovenian and English, Summary in English) Key words: Emperor Charles VI, ceremonies of hereditary homage, 1728, Carinthia, Styria, traffic, roads Abstract: The author presents a monument which is in sources referred to also as a pyramid or even an obelisk and was erected in Zgornji Motnik to commemorate the year when Emperor Charles VI travelled across the Slovenian lands in 1728. The first monument of this type was built at Ljubelj upon the same occasion, commemorating the fact that the emperor entered the land of Carniola at this mountain pass, at which a much-used road had been running ever since the Antiquity. Just as at Ljubelj, other places in the Inner Austrian Lands prepared for the emperor's visit well, starting with the restoration and reinforcement of the roads along which the emperor was to travel and which were in the future to become the main commercial roads and the fastest connections to the free ports of Trieste and Rijeka. At both above-mentioned locations, which were also the border between lands (Ljubelj between Carniola and Carinthia and Zgornji Motnik between Carniola and Styria), the emperor was honoured by inscriptions on monuments. These inscriptions reflect the characteristics and manner of ancient imperial inscriptions.

Category: 1.01 Original scientific paper Language: Original in Slovenian (Abstract in Slovenian and English, Summary in English) Key words: the October revolution, ideology, philosophy, imperialism, society Abstract: The article discusses the October Revolution as a key event of the 20th century, which as such, however, confronts us with the question of revolution in general. Revolution should not be understood purely as a specific social phenomenon, but in the context of the totalization of social subjectivity, which can also take on a totalitarian form. Within this, a new reflective horizon opens regarding totalitarian ideology as a tool and a weapon in the function of social power. Finally, we are confronted with the philosophical question, what is happening—not only because of the millions of victims of revolutionary terror, but also because of the nihilistic expansion of social subjectivity—with the essential meaning of humanity and individual existence.

Category: 1.01 Original scientific paper Language: Original in Slovene (Abstract in Slovene and English, Summary in English) Key words: Prekmurje, 1458–1741, historical outline, public administration, property relations, population, religion, language Abstract: This paper presents a historical outline of the almost three hundred years of development of the region known today as Prekmurje. The covered period begins with the reign of King Matthias Corvinus (from 1458, but crowned with the Crown of Saint Stephen in 1464) and ends with the coronation of Queen Maria Theresa in 1741. The three-hundred-year period did little good for the region; on the contrary, it subjected it to a great deal of misery. As a result, the period is referred to as the period of profound turning points. A brief description of the sources and literature is given initially, followed by the following chapters: I. Public administration; II. Markers of the Age – a historical outline of the period with significant events that impacted Prekmurje, and of the changes in property relations; III. Population, language, religion – population, social relations, language, and an outline of the religious conditions and ecclesiastic administration.

Category: 1.01 Original scientific paper Language: Original in Slovene (Abstract in Slovene and English, Summary in English) Key words: Austro-Hungarian Army, Withdrawal, Military Transports, Railways, 1918, the State of the Slovenes, Croats and Serbs Abstract: The end of military actions between Austrian-Hungary and the Kingdom of Italy was market on the November 3, 1918, with the signing of the Military truce of Villa Giusta. This truce accelerated the withdraw of the Austro-Hungarian Army which started on October 24 during the last Italian offensive on the river Piava. The Slovenian lands, which played an important role during the war as the direct hinterland of the front, once again occupied an important position, this time during the transporting of Austro-Hungarian troops back to their homelands. In this way, military transports affected also the newly established State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. From the beginning of November 1918, in addition to its internal and foreign problems, this new state was threatened with the transport of many hungry, exhausted and traumatized soldiers. Therefore, the National government in Ljubljana in cooperation with the disintegrating supreme military command of the Austro-Hungarian Army tried to organize the military transports across the Slovenian lands as fast as possible. In the end, the transport of the Austro-Hungarian Army passed without major incidents such as plundering and riots. Therefore, the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs was able to carry out its internal consolidation and unification with the Kingdom of Serbia into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

The authors try to explain the situation more than two decades later from the historical point of view. All the electoral premieres during the "Spring of nations" from 1989 till 1991 featured a showdown between the ruling Communists and their successor parties and the newly formed or emerging opposition. The opposition was victorious in all the discussed countries other than Bulgaria and Romania. On the other hand, none of the coalitions or big tent parties from the early 1990s survived next two decades. Only in few cases, really stable party systems emerged until 2010s.

Category: 1.01 Original scientific paper Language: Original in Slovene (Abstract in Slovene and English, Summary in English) Key Words: Anton Korošec, The State of SCS, Geneva agreement, Nikola Pašić, National Council. Abstract: At the end of October 1918, the delegates of the National Council from Zagreb went to Geneva to inform themselves about the current international position. Because of political pressure from the Entente the South Slav politicians reached the so-called Geneva agreement in November 1918. Based on it, an equal number of members from the Kingdom of Serbia and the State of SCS, which would work on common affairs, would form a joint ministry. Nikola Pašić, the Serbian PM, agreed on the postponement of the Monarchy. In his false report, Pašić misinformed his government, that the members of the ministry would take an oath to the Serbian king and to the National Council. Consequently, the vice-president of the Serbian government resigned, as well as Pašić. When Belgrade found out about the difficult international position of Zagreb, the Serbian court carried out the unification behind the scenes, bypassing Korošec and other politicians that were abroad. They leaned on Svetozar Pribičević, the vice-president of the National Council, who carried out the wishes of the Serbian royal court with joy.

Category: 1.01 Original scientific paper Language: Original in Slovene (Abstract in Slovene and English, Summary in English) Key words: Vittorio Veneto, southwestern front, First World War, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Italian offensive Abstract: Based on the study of archival sources and literature, the author analyses the conditions in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and on the southwestern front in 1918. This is followed by an analysis of the preparations for and the course of the Italian offensive at Vittorio Veneto which lasted from October 24 to November 4, 1918. The goal of the Italian Armed Forces was to achieve a decisive breakthrough on the front sector Valdobbiadene–Feltre, in the lower part of the Piave river. After initially successes in resisting, the Austro-Hungarian Armed Forces began to fall apart and was forced to withdraw. The Italian victory ended the war on the southwestern front and caused the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Armed Forces and the signing of an armistice between Italy and Austria-Hungary. The Austro-Hungarian army, then, began to withdraw while the Italian army carefully and slowly followed and occupied all areas promised to them under the London Memorandum.

Category: 1.01 Original scientific paper Language: Original in Slovene (Abstract in Slovene and English, Summary in English) Key words: Diocese of Ljubljana, Diocese of Maribor, charity work, military graves, war orphans, widows, Slovenia Abstract: The events during the war and the time after it brought several consequences for the population of the Slovenian lands. These were noticeable in all areas of personal and community life, and were particularly challenging for church communities, which prepared a series of initiatives to alleviate social distress and to regulate the issues raised by the war. Attention was drawn to various groups of the population: war orphans, widows, disabled soldiers, refugees from the Gorica (Gorizia) region, and the missing. Additional care had to be given to the military graves and the military sections of the cemeteries. The various forms of charitable action needed to be coordinated. The alliance Karitativna zveza became an umbrella organization for said charity work. There were various rallies, the preparation of programs and the raising of funds for the charity work. When the Spanish disease broke out at the end of the war, it was in the ecclesiastical context to find original explanations of this ordeal. The paper also outlines initiatives taken by individual bishops to regulate the situation. They placed greater emphasis on the religious dimension of the event. At the same time, they warned people against taking advantage of affected friends and relatives, and against a disorderly life.
