In this study, some structure-sensitive thermophysical properties, namely, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric power, density and surface tension of liquid AlCu4TiMg alloy, as one of the most promising cast alloys to fabricate components for cars, aircraft and other complex engineering products, were investigated. Thermoelectric power was measured in a wide temperature range by the four-point contact method. Thermal conductivity was investigated by the steady-state concentric cylinder method. The oscillating drop technique combined with electromagnetic levitation was used for density and surface tension studies. The results obtained are compared with experimental and calculated data from literature for pure aluminum.

Abstract The Ga–Li system is very attractive for the development of microelectronic and Li-ion cell applications as negative electrodes. In this study, thermophysical properties such as density, surface tension, viscosity, thermal and electrical conductivity, and thermoelectric power were investigated. Taking into account the intermetallic compounds occurring in Ga–Li, the measurements were conducted in a temperature range of 323–773 K. The experimentally obtained results revealed lower density and surface tension with increasing Li additions. The viscosity, electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power slightly reduced with the addition of Li content to eutectic Ga–Sn–Zn. The opposite was true of thermal conductivity, which increased slightly. The performed Nusselt number and Peclet number calculations for eutectic Ga–Sn–Zn with Li additions show similar dependency as found in literature data for Ga and Ga–In alloys.

ABSTRACTThermoelectric properties of low dimensional structures based on PbTe/PbSrTe-multiple quantum-well (MQW)-structures with regard to the structural dimensions, doping profiles and levels are presented. Interband transition energies and barrier band-gap are determined from IR-transmission spectra and compared with Kronig-Penney calculations. The influence of the data evaluation method to obtain the 2D power factor will be discussed. The thermoelectrical data of our layers show a more modest enhancement in the power factor σS2 compared with former publications and are in good agreement with calculated data from Broido et al. [5]. The maximum allowed doping level for modulation doped MQW structures is determined. Thermal conductivity measurements show that a ZT enhancement can be achieved by reducing the thermal conductivity due to interface scattering. Additionally promising lead chalcogenide based superlattices for an increased 3D figure of merit are presented.

AbstractLow-dimensional materials have recently attracted much interest as thermoelectric materials because of their charge carrier confinement leading to thermoelectric performance enhancement. Carbon nanotubes are promising candidates because of their one-dimensionality in addition to their unique advantages such as flexibility and light weight. However, preserving the large power factor of individual carbon nanotubes in macroscopic assemblies has been challenging, primarily due to poor sample morphology and a lack of proper Fermi energy tuning. Here, we report an ultrahigh value of power factor (14 ± 5 mW m−1 K−2) for macroscopic weavable fibers of aligned carbon nanotubes with ultrahigh electrical and thermal conductivity. The observed giant power factor originates from the ultrahigh electrical conductivity achieved through excellent sample morphology, combined with an enhanced Seebeck coefficient through Fermi energy tuning. We fabricate a textile thermoelectric generator based on these carbon nanotube fibers, which demonstrates high thermoelectric performance, weavability, and scalability. The giant power factor we observe make these fibers strong candidates for the emerging field of thermoelectric active cooling, which requires a large thermoelectric power factor and a large thermal conductivity at the same time.

AbstractW360 is a hot work tool steel produced by voestalpine BÖHLER Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG, a special steel producer located in Styria, Austria. Surface tension and density of liquid W360 were studied as a function of temperature in a non-contact, containerless fashion using the oscillating drop method inside an electromagnetic levitation setup. For both, surface tension and density, a linear model was adapted to present the temperature dependence of these measures, including values for the uncertainties of the fit parameters found. The data obtained are compared to pure iron (with 91 wt% the main component of W360), showing an overlap for the liquid density while there is a significant difference in surface tension (− 5.8 % at the melting temperature of pure iron of 1811 K).

A calculation method of wheel-rail multi-point contact based on the elastic contact model is introduced. Moreover, the simulation calculation of vehicles passing through branch lines of No.18 turnouts is carried out. The result showed that the acute change of wheel-rail normal force caused by the transfers of wheel-rail contact point between two rails can be avoid by wheel-rail multi-point contact method, and the transfers of wheel-rail normal force between two rails is smoother. The validity of wheel-rail multi-point contact method is verified.
