Introduction: This study is justified since very little is known of the relationship between Leishmaniasis and the spatial transformation process. In the past, the municipality of Teodoro Sampaio has spread ACL and recently cases of visceral Leishmaniasis have been found in dogs in the urban area, making the municipality a likely area for the convergence of both manifestations of the disease. The overall aim is to relate recent spatial transformations with the pattern of spatial distribution of the infection’s vectors and hosts, keeping in mind the integrated geographic distribution of ACL and AVL.  Methods:  The study has two levels of aggregation: (a) a population-based case study of the municipality of Teodoro Sampaio, Pontal do Paranapanema, in the state of São Paulo, designed to be quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional, and (b) population-based across the municipalities of São Paulo state, designed to be retrospective, quantitative, observational and descriptive. The choice of two approaches to the study is justified by a consideration of the articulations which enable the formation of production circuits for Leishmaniasis in the region. The gathering of data for the Teodoro Sampaio case study underwent two phases: field study and by means of secondary official data sources. Data concerning the state of São Paulo comes from secondary sources.  Conclusion: As it is a focal disease, the data presented allows us to infer that AVL spreads from Sector 1 of the urban area to Sector 3, because the vector relevant to transmission is within the former. The ACL pattern in Teodoro Sampaio is thought to be based in the woodlands surrounding the urban area, in general terms, based in the Parque Estadual do Morro do Diabo (PEMD), the edge of which is five kilometres from the centre of the district. Exchanges take place between the urban area of the municipality, the PEMD, the settlement of Ribeirão Bonito, which forms part of the transect making up the geosystem of Teodoro Sampaio, and Pontal do Paranapanema. Human intervention can be seen as the main agent in promoting these exchanges between environments due to the transit of people between subgeosystems and the interrelationship with other municipalities encouraging the spread of the disease. The only municipalities to be among those with a high incidence of AVL are Araçatuba and Presidente Prudente, although the number of cases is growing and becoming more concentrated. The state presents a circumscribed hub of AVL cases in the region of Campinas and Piracicaba, and another in Pontal do Paranapanema. This interaction borders on Mato Grosso do Sul, giving rise to the main circuit AVL instances of the Southeast. ACL has a hub at Itapetininga, which is next to Vale do Paraiba Paulista, also leading to interactions across the border with the state of Rio de Janeiro and its principal circumscribed centres of transmission of ACL. This will be Brazil’s next ACL production circuit. It was possible to identify areas in the state of São Paulo particularly vulnerable to Leishmaniasis with particular distributions for each of the two types of the disease, sometimes existing together. Outbreaks of canine VL do not depend on distribution rules on a small scale, although the effect of many outbreaks together clarifies a spatial pattern, as seen in the state of São Paulo. Patterns of transmission of Leishmaniasis are established in the state of São Paulo and the data analyzed helps to verify these patterns.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess how technology transfer offices (TTOs) of a public university of the state of São Paulo use patent valuation methods in the process of using developed technology value and transferring technology to industry. Design/methodology/approach This study is an exploratory qualitative investigation based on a case study conducted in a public university in the state of São Paulo. The university has a TTO and an internal structure for technology transfer. In-depth interviews were conducted with the TTO manager about patent valuation and the answers given were analysed. Findings The results on how TTOs use patent valuation methods in the process of assigning value to technology indicate which factors facilitate and which factors hinder the valuation of patents in technologies developed at universities. Research limitations/implications The possible lack of data disclosure due to confidentiality regarding royalties and trading fees makes further comparisons between Brazilian public universities difficult. Therefore, this study recommends that further studies on patent valuation and technology transfer process at private universities, research institutes and public and private companies should be performed. Practical implications In the practice, this study contributes to companies and TTOs by increasing their synergies in licensing negotiations, as well as by reducing the gap of information, between the business parties for assignment and transfer of technologies. With regard to theoretical contribution, this study can cite advances in the methods to measure the financial benefits arising from the valuation of technologies embedded in the patents. Originality/value Owing to the lack of research on the methods of valuation used by TTOs of Brazilian universities, the present study can be useful in serving as a theoretical source for future research and in supporting future TTO negotiations in the process of transferring technologies to productive industry.

This article will unfold a longe durée spatial biography of the urban area of Bixiga (São Paulo, Brazil) to probe the particular role of space in the conflation of different cultural practices and territorial claims. The extended case study bridges indigenous, colonial, and postcolonial urbanization as they amalgamated an intricate assemblage of material and cultural strata. Combined historical urban analysis and fieldwork allow to uncover how the resulting urban milieu integrates discrepant urban worlds, perpetually iterating between centrality and marginality, innovation and degradation, oppression and resistance. Building on Foucault’s (1984) conception of heterotopia, Bixiga will surface as an allotopia, a place that accommodates, cumulates, and celebrates a multitude of differences. It sheds light, this way, on more insurgent histories of urbanism, where urban space is piecemeal forged through contentious struggles over space in the city.

Teak (Tectona grandis Linn. F.) is one of the most important forest crops in Brazil, occupying areas in different regions, such as Goiás, Mato Grosso, Paraná, and São Paulo states. Teak wood is used for many purposes such as shipbuilding, rolling and plywood, firewood, and charcoal. In May 2011, teak symptomatic feeder root samples, exhibiting inconspicuous, small galls, were collected in the municipality of Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil (22°41′46.90″S, 47°38′36.84″W). Specimens were identified through perineal patterns and esterase phenotypes of 20 adult females (1,2). Perineal patterns and esterase phenotypes were consistent with those described for Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal, 1889) Chitwood, 1949 and M. javanica (Treub, 1885) Chitwood, 1949. Perineal patterns of M. arenaria showed a low dorsal arch, compressed dorsolaterally, with lateral field marked by some forked and broken striae; no punctate markings between anus and tail terminus were observed. Perineal patterns of M. javanica were rounded, with low dorsal arch, striae smooth, lateral field distinct, clearly demarcated from striae by parallel lines. From the esterase electrophoresis we obtained A2 (Rm:1.2;1.3) and J3 (Rm:1.0;1.25;1.4) phenotypes, typical from M. arenaria and M. javanica, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first report of M. arenaria parasitizing teak roots in Brazil and elsewhere (new host) and the first report of M. javanica infecting teak in the State of São Paulo. Previously, M. javanica was reported to be infecting teak-growing areas in the State of Mato Grosso (3). This finding has a great importance, not only by the inclusion of these parasites in teak pathological scenario, but also for predicting possible damage in plant species used in teak-based intercropping systems. Gillnetting is one of the most practiced fishing methods adopted in the South of Brazil and has been increasingly expanding over the last years. This paper presents the characterization of the activity and discusses its management, in accordance to results from the discussions on the development of regulations on net fisheries in the South Coast Marine Protected Area (APAMLS) in the state of São Paulo. Gillnet fleets are formed by small-scale boats, with low autonomy, and lower fishing capacity, when compared to boats from other ports in the South and Southeast. However, the number of fishing units is high, reaching 1,709 units operating in the South coast of São Paulo in 2010. This kind of fleet uses several types of gillnets, and the activity may be classified according to the fishery type (industrial, coastal artisanal and estuarine artisanal). The activity was discussed in the APAMLS and the fishing industry, with the participation of all segments, and a proposal for gillnetting regulation was reached. The results suggested that gillnet length for industrial fisheries should be reduced by 30%. It must be emphasized that without effective inspection measures leading the fishing industry to believe in the enforcement of the proposal, private interests of the most influential political sectors may cause the process to retrocede.

The male of Aillutticus rotundus Galiano, 1987 is described for the first time and new records are presented from the states of Acre, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo, Brazil. In addition, five new species of this genus are described from Brazil: A. knysakae sp. nov. from the states of Minas Gerais, Piauí and Tocantins, A. montanus sp. nov. from the state of Minas Gerais, A. raizeri sp. nov. from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, A. soteropolitano sp. nov. from the state of Bahia, and A. viripotens sp. nov. from the states of Rondônia and Tocantins.
