The first meteorological measurement in Surtsey were conducted before the eruption ended in 1967 and since 2009 there have been continous automatic measurements on the island. Here we give the first comprehensive analysis of the climate of Surtsey, based on these observations, and compare it to the climate at the two other stations in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, Vestmannaeyjabær and Stórhöfði. Surtsey experiences a relatively mild but windy climate, with monthly mean temperature above freezing during all calendar months and wind speed exceeding 20 m/s on average 30 days a year. Precipitation measurements are challenging but show, as expected, the summer months to be the driest and October to be both on average the wettest month but also the most variable month. The measurements show the climate of Surtsey to be similar to the climate of the other two stations in the archipelago with the largest difference in wind speed, where Vestamannaeyjabær is sheltered while at Stórhöfði strong winds are enhanced by the orography.

AbstractGenerally, intermolecular disulfide bond contribute to the conformational protein stability. To identify sites where intermolecular disulfide bond can be introduced into the Fab’s constant domain of the therapeutic IgG, Fab mutants were predicted using the MOE software, a molecular simulator, and expressed in Pichia pastoris. SDS-PAGE analysis of the prepared Fab mutants from P. pastoris indicated that among the nine analyzed Fab mutants, the F130C(H):Q124C(L), F174C(H):S176C(L), V177C(H):Q160C(L), F174C(H):S162C(L), F130C(H):S121C(L), and A145C(H):F116C(L) mutants mostly formed intermolecular disulfide bond. All these mutants showed increased thermal stability compared to that of Fab without intermolecular disulfide bond. In the other mutants, the intermolecular disulfide bond could not be completely formed, and the L132C(H):F118C(L) mutant showed only a slight decrease in binding activity and β-helix content, owing to the exertion of adverse intermolecular disulfide bond effects. Thus, our comprehensive analysis reveals that the introduction of intermolecular disulfide bond in the Fab’s constant domain is possible at various locations. These findings provide important insights for accomplishing human Fab stabilization.

SYNOPSIS We provide a comprehensive analysis of special items and the characteristics of the firms that recognize them. Our analysis reveals that the temporal frequency, magnitude, and persistence of special items has increased significantly in the last 30 years, and that such increases are primarily driven by negative special items. More recently, however, our evidence is consistent with both a decline in frequency and magnitude of negative special items. On the other hand, we find that the frequency of reporting of positive special items, which remained relatively constant through 2002, has increased in more recent years. We also find strong evidence that subsequent special item reporting is an increasing function of the frequency of “prior” special item reporting. Using a random subsample of firms reporting special items, we document that 22 percent of the amounts reported in Compustat do not reconcile with the amounts reported on the firms' actual financial statements. Our comprehensive analysis should be of interest to regulators, academics, and managers interested in the implications of special items on firm-related consequences such as future earnings and firm value. Our examination can also serve as a catalyst for researchers interested in extending this important area of inquiry.

This paper proposes compact hardware implementations of 64-bit NESSIE proposed MISTY1 block cipher for area constrained and low power ASIC applications. The architectures comprise only one round MISTY1 block cipher algorithm having optimized FO/FI function by re-utilizing S9/S7 substitution functions. A focus is also made on efficient logic implementations of S9 and S7 substitution functions using common sub-expression elimination (CSE) and parallel AND/XOR gates hierarchy. The proposed architecture 1 generates extended key with independent FI function and is suitable for MISTY1 8-rounds implementation. On the other hand, the proposed architecture 2 uses a single FO/FI function for both MISTY1 round function as well as extended key generation and can be employed for MISTY1 [Formula: see text] rounds. To analyze the performance and covered area for ASICs, Synopsys Design Complier, SMIC 0.18[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m @ 1.8[Formula: see text]V is used. The hardware constituted 3041 and 2331 NAND gates achieving throughput of 171 and 166 Mbps for 8 rounds implementation of architectures 1 and 2, respectively. Comprehensive analysis of proposed designs is covered in this paper.

By means of hourly rainfall data from the Hydroclimatic Network, the motions of large rainstorms, of the kind associated with squall lines, are examined in relation to the winds aloft. Very little correlation is found between the speed of movement of the rainstorms and the wind speed at any level, although the fastest moving storms were associated with strong winds aloft. Significant correlation is found between direction of motion of rainstorms, and wind direction at 700 mb or higher levels. On the average, the rainstorms move with an appreciable component toward right of the wind direction. The difference between these results, and those from other studies based on small precipitation areas, is ascribed to propagation. The mechanism involved is discussed briefly.

AbstractIn November 2008 an automated meteorological station was established at Lake Untersee in East Antarctica, producing a 5-yr data record of meteorological conditions at the lake. This dataset includes five austral summer seasons composed of December, January, and February (DJF). The average solar flux at Lake Untersee for the four years with complete solar flux data is 99.2 ± 0.6 W m−2. The mean annual temperature at Lake Untersee was determined to be −10.6° ± 0.6°C. The annual degree-days above freezing for the five years were 9.7, 37.7, 22.4, 7.0, and 48.8, respectively, with summer (DJF) accounting for virtually all of this. For these five summers the average DJF temperatures were −3.5°, −1.9°, −2.2°, −2.6°, and −2.5°C. The maximum (minimum) temperatures were +5.3°, +7.6°, +5.7°, +4.4°, and +9.0°C (−13.8°, −12.8°, −12.9°, −13.5°, and −12.1°C). The average of the wind speed recorded was 5.4 m s−1, the maximum was 35.7 m s−1, and the average daily maximum was 15 m s−1. The wind speed was higher in the winter, averaging 6.4 m s−1. Summer winds averaged 4.7 m s−1. The dominant wind direction for strong winds is from the south for all seasons, with a secondary source of strong winds in the summer from the east-northeast. Relative humidity averages 37%; however, high values will occur with an average period of ~10 days, providing a strong indicator of the quasi-periodic passage of storms across the site. Low summer temperatures and high wind speeds create conditions at the surface of the lake ice resulting in sublimation rather than melting as the main mass-loss process.

A bridge, which is located in the route of typhoon, is considered how to assure normal traffic use against strong winds. As one of the measures, wind barrier is proposed to be set on both sides of the bridge section for reducing wind velocity across it. In this study, an analysis by using CFX, a computational fluid dynamics program, is carried out to investigate the effects of wind barrier. The speed of wind is assumed as 60m/s. To find out an efficient design of the boards, different porosity ratios(r) of the boards is assumed for comparison. The result shows that wind barrier could reduce the wind speed across the bridge effectively.

Abstract This study applies different wavelet coherence formulations for investigating the multiscale associations of reference Evapotranspiration (ET0) of Tabriz and Urmia stations in North West Iran with five climatic variables, mean temperature (T), pressure (P), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (U) and Solar Radiation (SR). The relationships between different variables are quantified using the Average Wavelet Coherence (AWC) and the Percentage of Significant Coherence (PoSC). The Bivariate Wavelet Coherence (BWC) analysis showed that mean temperature (AWC = 0.73, PoSC = 59.18%) and wind speed (AWC = 0.63, PoSC = 49.55%) are the dominant predictors at Tabriz and Urmia stations. On considering the Multiple Wavelet Coherence (MWC) analysis, it is noticed that among the two-factor combinations, the T-P and P-RH combinations resulted in the highest coherence values for Tabriz and Urmia stations. T-U-SR combination produced the highest multiple wavelet coherence values among the three-factor cases for both the stations. The Partial Wavelet Coherence (PWC) analysis indicated a drastic reduction in coherence from the values of respective BWC analysis, indicating a strong interrelationship between different variables and ET0. The interrelationship between meteorological variables and ET0 is more apparent at Tabriz, while it is controlled more by the local-scale meteorology at Urmia.

Spray losses are the most important problem that is faced in the spray application process as result of spray drift to non target areas by the action of air flow.This paper investigated the spray drift for banding applicationusing even flat-fan nozzle TPEunder wind tunnel conditions.In addition, this paper also examined the effect of different spray fan angles 65°, 80° and 95° on spray drift particularly where there is need to make the nozzle operate at the optimum heights above the ground or plant level.In addition, three cross wind speeds 1, 2 and 3m/swere produced to determine the effect of wind speed on total spray drift.According to the results from this study, the nozzle anglehas a significant effect on the total spray drift. The nozzle angle 65° gave the highest drift reduction compared to the other nozzle angles. The maximum driftfor all nozzles was found at nozzle height of 60 cm. The minimum mean value of the drift was found at wind speed of 1 m/s. This study supports the use of nozzle angles of less than 95° on heights more than 0.5m and on wind speeds more than 1m/s as a means for minimizing spray drift.

Abstract This paper attempts to show that manufacture of Micoquian bifacial backed tools was structured. Data for this study were collected using a comprehensive analysis of artefacts from the site Pietraszyn 49a, Poland, which is dated to the beginning of Marine Isotope Stage 3. Based on the whole data set, it was possible to distinguish four stages of the manufacturing process. During manufacturing, both mineral hammer and organic hammer were used. The tools were usually shaped due to distinct hierarchization of faces. The study has also shown that the shape of bifacial tools from Pietraszyn 49a is very similar to the other Micoquian examples from central Europe. The ways of shaping of some tools are finding their counterparts also in the Early Upper Palaeolithic inventories, but the similarities are rather limited to the narrow range of preparation of bifacial form.
