Yard long bean (Vigna unguiculata var. sesquipedalis L.) is one of the important leguminous vegetables in Bangladesh. However, yield of this vegetable is much lower in Bangladesh compared to other yard long beangrowing countries. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the yield of this vegetable. In the present study, genetic variability, heritability, character association and genetic diversity were evaluated on randomized complete block design with three replications among seven-yard-long bean genotypes. The genotypes were significantly variable for the studied characters. High genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation was observed in number of pods per plant and pod yield per plant. Accordingly, high heritability together with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed in number of pod per plant, pod diameter and hundred seed weight. The correlation studies revealed that pod yield per plant showed significant positive correlation with number of seed per pod, number of pods per plant while significantly negative correlation with days to marketable harvest at both genotypic and phenotypic level. Path analysis revealed days to first flowering, days to maturity, number of pods per plant, pod weight and number of seeds per pod had direct positive effect on pod yield per plant. The studied genotypes were clustered into 3 groups with highest of inter-cluster distance between cluster I and III while lowest between cluster II and III. The genotypes of cluster I exhibited higher mean performance while lower in cluster III for important traits including pod yield per plant.

A field experiment was conducted using twenty three rice genotypes including three check varieties during the period from June to December, 2013, at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to study genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance (GA) for yield and yield associated traits in rice. The experiment was laid down in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, number of filled grains per panicle, days to 50% flowering, thousand grain weight, grain width and grain yield showed relatively high genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic co-efficient of variation (PCV) estimates. The PCV were higher than GCV for all eight traits indicating that they all interacted with the environment to some extent. High heritability was obtained for grain width (88.54%), followed by days to 50% flowering (87.61%), thousand grain weight (81.96%), grain length (81.94%), days to maturity (81.81%) and number of filled grains per panicle (78.19%) which indicates high heritable portion of variation. High to medium estimates of heritability and genetic advance were obtained for number of filled grains per panicle (18.97), days to 50% flowering (11.89), days to maturity (12.16) indicating the roles of additive gene action and a good scope of selection using their phenotypic performance. Considering, all of these characters, filled gains per panicle and days to 50% flowering and maturity were important yield related traits and could be used for selection in rice breeding programs.Progressive Agriculture 26:26-31, 2015

The experiment on evaluation of open pollinated genotypes of Yard long bean (Vigna unguiculata ssp. sesquipedalis) was conducted during summer season of 2016 and 2017 at Horticulture Research Division, Khumaltar Lalitpur to assess the variability in the genotypes and yield potentiality for commercial production. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Six genotypes viz. Great Wall 01, Great Wall 02, Great Wall 03, Great Wall 04 and Great Wall 08 were compared with Khumal Tane. Observations were recorded on fresh pod yield and yield attributing parameters. The plant vigor and plant uniformity score (1-5 scale) was not found significantly different among the tested genotypes. The highest number of pods per plant (46) was observed on the variety Great Wall 03 and the lowest number of pods (33) on Great Wall 01 followed by Khumal Tane (39). The fresh pod yield was noted the highest with Great wall 03 (24 t/ha) followed by Great Wall 2 (19.4 t/ha). The lowest yield was observed with Khumal Tane (12.7 t/ha). Likewise, Great Wall 03 was found tender whitish with green color when it matures and spongy type of fruit with mid early maturity (85-95 days) along with long harvesting period of 30-35 days. Although Great Wall 02 scored 4.7 in plant uniformity (1-5 scale) and 4.4 in plant vigor (1-5 scale) it was characterized as thick fleshy and whitish green color at maturity with smooth straight type flesh having early maturity (70-80 days) which could gain the demand of the market early compared to most popular Khumal Tane. Thus, among all genotypes Great Wall 03 and Great Wall 02 were recorded best for further evaluation and recommendation.

Background: Edible podded pea is an oriental vegetable crop which shares the cultivation pattern with the garden pea. Fresh tender pods lacking parchment layer are consumed whole like beans. It is a newly introduced crop in India and therefore, it would be imperative to identify the most promising genotypes vis-à-vis traits of interest, those contributing towards maximization of yield. The present investigation was, therefore, planned to assess the genetic parameters of variability for pod yield and related horticultural traits in order to identify the most promising edible pod pea genotypesMethods: Thirty six genotypes comprising of 29 F7 advanced breeding lines and nine lines from different institutes including three checks namely, ‘Arka Apoorva’, ‘Arka Sampoorna’ and ‘Mithi Phali’ were evaluated in randomized complete block design over three replications during winters 2016-2017 at C.S.K. Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur for pod yield and related horticultural traits.Result: Sufficient genetic variability was observed for all morphological and yield contributing attributes. The magnitude of phenotypic (PCV) and genotypic (GCV) coefficients of variation were high for pod yield while branches per plant, internodal length, harvest duration and pods per plant showed high PCV and moderate GCV. High heritability along with high genetic advance was observed for internodal length, plant height, average pod weight and pod yield per plant indicating the importance of additive gene action. Pod yield per plant revealed positive correlation at both phenotypic and genotypic levels with pods per plant, average pod weight, pod length and pod breadth. Pods per plant and average pod weight at both phenotypic and genotypic levels had maximum positive direct and indirect effects to the total association of component traits suggesting the importance of these traits towards pod yield.

The 38 indigenous and exotic accessions of mungbean were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replicates during <italic>summer</italic> and <italic>kharif</italic> seasons of fragile climate of Rajasthan to estimate the presence of genetic variability, inter-characters associations, to identify a suitable short duration accession for cultivation during <italic>summer</italic> and to compare the relative performance of the genotypes in two seasons. The high degree of genetic variability was estimated during both seasons for seed yield per plant (g), 100-seed weight (g.), number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant, number of pods per cluster, number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, plant height (cm.), number of days to 50% flowering and number of days to maturity. The moderate to high heritabilities coupled with moderate to high expected genetic advance were observed for all studied traits. Number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant, number of pods per cluster, number of clusters per plant, days to 50% flowering and days to maturity had positive and significant correlations with seed yield per plant. The accession IC 39289-P<sub>4</sub> had been identified to be of short duration of 50 days. The accessions PLG 62, EC 520035, IC 305291, IC 39383, IC 39333, IC 39403 during <italic>summer</italic> season and EC 511379, PLM-14, IC 324021, EC 511371, IC 370497 during <italic>kharif</italic> seasonexhibited superiority in terms of seed yield over best check.

An experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design to estimate genetic variability of ten rice genotypes. Analysis of variance for yield and yield contributing traits showed significant (p<0.01) variation among the genotypes. Results of genetic analyses showed a higher phenotypic coefficient of variation compared to their corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation for all the traits measured, which indicates that the traits were influenced by environment. The magnitude of difference between phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) was less for the traits indicating little influence of environment. The higher estimates of PCV and GCV were observed for number of filled grains panicle–1 (27.53; 26.84), number of unfilled grains panicle–1 (26.76;25.28) and plant height (23.14; 23.00) indicates possibility of genetic improvement through direct selection for these traits, while days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, panicle length, number of effective tillers plant–1, fertility (%), 1000 Seed weight and yield panicle–1 showed low PCV and GCV values indicating the need for creation of variability by hybridization or mutation followed by selection. High heritability values (>60%) along with high genetic advance and genetic advance as percentage of mean were found for all the traits indicating prevalence of additive gene action, which provides good scope for further improvement by selection.J. Turmeric, a vegetatively propagated crop, may have restricted variability from which to breed new cultivars. Understanding the genetic variability of a species is crucial for the progress of a genetic breeding program and requires characterization and evaluation of accessions. The objectives of this study were to determine extent of variability, relationships between different agro-morphological traits, and diversity among 25 different accessions of turmeric. The present experiment was conducted at the Vegetable Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Allahabad, India during 2008–2009 and 2009–2010. Accessions were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Significant mean square of accessions for all the traits studied indicates the existence of sufficient genetic variability among the studied accessions. The rhizome yield exhibited highly significant and positive association with plant height, number of leaves plant−1, number of tillers plant−1, weight of rhizomes plant−1, length of primary rhizome, and dry matter recovery. The highest positive direct effect on rhizome yield was exerted by plant height. Multivariate analysis techniques allowed an effective study of genetic divergence and the grouping of the 25 accessions into six clusters. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster II and IV, accessions from these clusters can be used as potential parents for future breeding programs.

The present investigation was carried out to elucidate the information on the performance of groundnut genotypes for quantitative and qualitative traits. The experimental design consisted of 11 groundnut genotypes (including one check) arranged in Randomized complete Block Design with three replications in the Kharif season 2014 at Field Experimentation Centre of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, SHIATS Allahabad, Analysis of variance revealed the presence of considerable variation among the genotypes for all the characters studied. On the basis of mean performance among 11 genotypes ICG 163 was best genotype in growth like primary branches per plant (7.77), days to maturity(107.33), pod yield per plant  (17.89 g), kernel yield (21.12 q ha-1) and oil yield (997 kg  ha-1). ICG 434 and ICG 513 were the best in protein content (23.68%) and oil content (47.73%).

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) is an edible legume with good ability to fix nitrogen and not demanding soil fertility. However, some genotypes may have a greater ability to utilize the nutrients available in the soil for their growth. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of phosphorus (P) use in genotypes of cowpea. The experiment was conducted in the field and the experimental design was a randomized complete block design with four replicates arranged in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme. The treatments consisted of two P doses (0 and 60 kg ha-1 of P2O5) and five bean genotypes (Paulistinha, BRS Xiquexique, Pingo de Ouro, Corujinha, and Costela de Vaca). Each plot was formed by four plant rows, measuring 3.0 m in length, spaced 1.0 x 0.3 m, and with two plants per hole. The genotypes responded significantly to the increase in P levels in the soil, with increases in the number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant, productivity, dry mass, and plant P accumulation. "BRS Xiquexique" was efficient and responsive, and it could be indicated as the most appropriate for cultivation in the region. "Corujinha" is the most suitable cultivar for production in high levels of P among the creole genotypes evaluated. "Costela de Vaca" and "Paulistinha" can be indicated for low P production in the soil. low P production.

A field experiment was carried out at farmer field in Pudukurapettai village, Virudhachalam, Tamilnadu during 2019 to study genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance expressed as per cent of mean for yield and yield attributing characters in thirty three genotypes of yardlong bean. The mean performance recorded on days to first flowering was in the range of (46.78 to 57.33 days), vine length (196.76 to 386.32 cm), days to first picking (57.33 to 67.53 days), pod length (14.18 to 60.08 cm), pod width (1.76 to 3.43 cm), fresh pod weight (171.43 to 995.45 g), number of pods per plant (26.53 to 56.40), number of picking (10.00 to 14.20) and pod yield per plant (171.43 to 995.45 g). The genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation showed higher value for pod yield per plant (46.69 % and 46.70 %), fresh pod weight (42.27 and 42.28 %) and pod length (41.66 and 41.66 %). High heritability was observed for the all nine characters. Genetic advance as per cent of mean was higher for pod yield per plant (96.18 %), fresh pod weight (87.08 %), pod length (85.81 %), vine length (36.93 %), pod width (34.16 %) and number of pods per plant (30.04 %).

Objectif : La présente étude vise à une meilleure connaissance du niébé vert par l’évaluation des performances agronomiques de douze (12) variétés. Méthodologie et résultats : Les variétés ont été évaluées par douze (12) variables quantitatives dans un dispositif en bloc de Fisher avec trois (3) répétitions à l’INERA/Kamboinsé en 2018. L’étude a montré l’existence d’une grande variabilité agronomique au sein des variétés étudiées. Des corrélations positives et significatives ont été aussi observées entre les variables. L’Analyse en Composante Principale (ACP) des variables a permis d’identifier la date 50% floraison, le SPAD, la date niébé vert, la date 95% maturité, le nombre de graines par gousse, le poids gousses, le poids graines, le poids fanes, le rendement graines et fanes comme les paramètres les plus pertinents qui discriminent les variétés. La meilleure variété a été le niébé baguette grimpant qui possédait une date niébé vert (50 jours) et une maturité (63 jours) précoce. Conclusion et application des résultats : La variété IT83S-872 a été identifiée comme très productive en termes de gousses (77 gousses). La variété Komsaré a obtenu un rendement en graines (2,72 t/ha) et en fanes (3,20 t/ha) très appréciables. Cependant, la variété IT85F-2887 s’est montrée exceptionnelle, car en plus d’avoir une date de niébé (50 jours) vert et une maturité précoce (65 jours), elle a présenté un bon rendement en graines (2,63 t/ha) et le meilleur rendement en fanes (3,67 t/ha). Ces variétés précoces, productives en graines et en fourrage pourront être des substituts du haricot vert et contribuer efficacement à l’amélioration de la production du niébé au Burkina Faso. The best variety was niébé baguette grimpant, with the earliest days to vegetable cowpea (50 days) and days to maturity (63 days). Conclusion and application of results: The variety IT83S-872 has been identified as the highest pods productive (77 pods). The variety Komsare recorded a very appreciable seeds (2.72 t/ha) and fodder (3.20 t/ha) yield. However, the variety IT85F-2887 was exceptional, in addition to its earliness for days to vegetable cowpea (50 days) and days to maturity (65 days), it recorded the best seeds (2.63 t/ha) and fodder (3.67 t/ha) yields. These early maturing, high seeds and fodder producing varieties, could substitute common beans and effectively contribute to the improvement of cowpea production in Burkina Faso.
