A field experiment was conducted during 2003-2004 at Bangladesh Agricultural University farm, Mymensingh to evaluate the suitability of different sources of organic materials for integrated use with chemical fertilizers for the Boro-Fallow-T. Aman rice cropping pattern. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Eight-treatments, formulated from organic manure and chemical fertilizers have been imposed. The treatment combinations are T1: control, T2: 70% NPKS, T3: 100% NPKS, T4: 70% NPKS + rice straw (RS) @ 5 t/ha, T5: 70% NPKS + dhaincha (DH) @ 15 t/ha, Tb: 70% NPKS + mungbean residue (MBR) @ 10 t/ha, T7: 70% NPKS + cowdung (CD) @ 5 t/ha and T8: 70% NPKS + poultry manure (PM) @ 3 t/ha. Organic manure or crop residue was applied to T. Aman rice and their residual effects were observed in the following Boro rice. Application of 70% NPKS + PM produced the highest grain yield of T. Aman rice, which was identical to that obtained with 100% NPKS with no manure. In Boro season. application of 100% NPKS produced the highest grain yield of 6.87 t/ha, which was identical with the application of 70% NPKS + PM (6.57 t/ha). The total grain yield in the cropping pattern ranged from 5.14 t/ha in T1 (control) treatment to 12.29 t/ha in the 100% NPKS. The application of 3 t/ha PM with 70% NPKS (T8) produced the total yield of 12.09 t/ha followed by 11.59 t/ha in the treatment containing 10 t/ha MBR plus 70% NPKS (T6). It appears that the application of 3 t/ha PM once in a year with 70% NPKS can reduce the use of 30% NPKS as fertilizers. There were negative balances for N and K with the highest mining of K, while the balances for P and S were positive. The economic analysis reveals that most of the treatments produced BCR (benefit-cost ratio) of more than 3.0 showing that they all are economically viable. The integrated use of fertilizers and manure resulted in considerable improvement in soil health by increasing organic matter, available P, and S contents of soils. The overall findings of the study indicate that the integrated use of chemical fertilizer and manure is important for sustainable crop yield in a rice-rice cropping pattern. Different combinations of chemical fertilizers and organic manure were applied for sustainable crop productivity in the cauliflower-stem amaranth -jute cropping pattern. The experiment was conducted at farmer’s field in Multilocation Testing (MLT) site of Pakshi, Pahna over three years. There were five combinations of chemical fertilizers (CF) and poultry manure (PM) along with absolute control arranged in a randomized complete block design. The results revealed that all three crops showed significant yield for fertilizer and poultry manure use. Higher yields were obtained with 50% CF + 50% PM followed by 75% CF + 25% PM treatments where cauliflower equivalent yield was increased by 85% and 78%, respectively, over control. This indicates a positive residual effect of poultry manure on the subsequent crops. From the economic points of view, the highest marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) was attained in 100% chemical fertilizer due to its lower variable cost followed by 75% CF + 25% PM treated plots. The experiment comprised of 10 treatments, such as T0: Control condition; T1: All chemical fertilizer as recommended dose; T2: Cowdung as recommended dose; T3: Compost as recommended dose; T4: ½ Cowdung + ½ Compost; T5: Cowdung + Compost; T6: Cowdung + ½ Chemical fertilizer; T7: Compost + ½ Chemical fertilizer; T8: Cowdung + Compost +½ Chemical fertilizer and T9: ½ Cowdung + ½ Compost + ½ Chemical fertilizer. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth characters and yield were recorded. Among the treatments all chemical fertilizers as recommended dose (T1) and cowdung + compost + ½ chemical fertilizer (T8) were found superior considering all yield contributing characters and yield. At 30 (Days after Sowing) DAS, the longest plant was recorded from T8 (27.93 cm), while the shortest plant was found in T0 (23.13 cm). At 50, 70, 90 DAS and harvest the longest plant was recorded from T1 (52.13 cm, 82.13 cm, 85.93 cm and 95.21 cm), whereas the shortest plant was obtained from T0 (41.14 cm, 65.84 cm, 70.77 cm and 76.00 cm). At 30, 50, 70, 90 DAS and harvest the maximum number of tillers hill-1 was recorded from T1 (2.00, 5.64, 6.93, 6.15 and 5.78), whereas the minimum number was found in T0 (1.33, 2.87, 4.20, 3.94 and 3.72). The longest spike (19.86 cm), maximum number of spikelets spikes-1 (20.33), maximum number of filled grains spike-1 (34.00), highest grain yield (3.71 t ha-1) and highest straw yield (5.78 t ha-1) was attained from T1 and the shortest spike (14.33 cm), minimum number of spikelets spikes-1 (14.18), minimum number of filled grains spike-1 (21.53), lowest grain yield (2.06 t ha-1) and lowest straw yield (4.49 t ha-1) was recorded from T0.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jesnr.v6i1.22066 J. Anatomy studies were carried out in the experimental field, College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad to have better understanding of the influence of mulching with black polyethylene sheets, organic manure and chemical fertilizer on the anatomy changes in potato shoot and leaves tissues. Results showed that leaves area, leaves area index and chlorophyll percentage were significantly increased by using mulching and chemical fertilizer by (7463.70 cm2, 3.97, 45.33 SPAD units) respectively. Also this treatment significantly increased total stomata number and in both lower and upper sides of the leaf by (957,721,176) stomata /mm2 respectively. But by using mulching treatment with organic manure significantly increased vessels and sieve tubes diameter by (12.5, 2.75) micron for respectively. However the control treatment significantly increased leaves thickness spongy mesophyll by (45) micron, while the palisade parenchyma thickness was significantly increased to 26.25 micron in mulching and chemical fertilizers treatment. In conclusion, the interaction between mulching with black polyethylene sheets and fertilizing with organic and chemical manure , caused same anatomy characteristic changes which increased the potatoes plant yield and the ability to drought tolerance.

A pot experiment was conducted in the net house of the Agronomy department, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November, 2018 to March, 2019 to evaluate the suitable organic source to mitigate the drought stress impact on wheat. The experiment comprised two factors viz. factor A: Three levels of organic manures, i)  O0 = Control (Without organic manure),       ii) O1 = Cowdung (10 t/ha), iii) O2 = Poultry litter (5 t/ha), and factor B:  four levels of drought i) D0 =  Control (without drought), ii) D1 =  Crown root initiation stage (at 20-29 DAS), iii) D2 =  Booting stage (at 45-54 DAS), iv) D3 = Anthesis stage (at 55-64 DAS). The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (factorial) with three replications. Organic manure showed positive impact on yield and cowdung (O1) gave the highest grain yield (4.06 g plant-1). This may be attributed to the highest number of effective tillers plant-1 (3.21), spike length (9.53 cm), spikelet spike-1 (17.31), grains spikelet-1 (2.31) and 1000-grain weight (44.61 g) of wheat in this treatment. In respect of drought imposition treatments, grain yield was found higher in control treatment (without imposition of drought) which was statistically similar with drought imposition at booting stage treatment (D2). These two treatments also showed highest number of effective tillers plant-1, spikelets spike-1, grains spike-1 and 1000-grain weight. Regarding the interaction of organic manure and drought, cowdung without drought imposition (O1D0) and cowdung with drought imposition at booting stage (O1D2) were highest yielder among the other interactions which was attributed to higher 1000-seed weight, number of effective tillers plant-1, spikelets spike-1 and grains spike-1. Results revealed that application of organic manure could reduce the impact of drought on wheat irrespective of growth stages. However, application of cowdung (10 t ha-1) was found more effective to combat drought impact at booting stage of wheat compared to other growth stages. Bangladesh Agron. J. 2020, 23(2): 81-86

Present research work conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2011 to April 2012 to study the feasibility of replacing chemical fertilizer by organic fertilizer in maize production. The experiment comprised of 10 treatments with organic manure and inorganic fertilizer viz., T0: Control (without any fertilizer), T1: All chemical fertilizers (recommended dose), T2: Cowdung (Recommended dose), T3: Compost (recommended dose), T4: ½ Compost + 1/2 Cowdung, T 5: Full cow dung + Full compost, T6: Full cow dung + 1/2 Chemical fertilizer, T7: Full compost + ½ Chemical fertilizer, T8: Full cow dung + Full compost + 1/2 Chemical fertilizer, T9: 1/2 Cowdung + 1/2 Compost + 1/2 Chemical fertilizer. Maize variety of BARI hybrid bhutta 9 was the test crop. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results indicated that the highest cobs plant-1 (1.67), cob length (22.27 cm), cob diameter (14.12 cm), grains cob-1 (531.90), weight of 1000 grain (305.30 g), grain yield (11.75 t ha-1) and stover yield (13.97 t ha-1) was obtained from T1. Treatments T7, T8 and T9 gave statistically similar values in respect of yield and yield contributing characters. Treatment T9 (1/2 Cowdung + 1/2 Compost + 1/2 Chemical fertilizers) could be ideal fertilizer management for maize cultivation keeping chemical pollution minimum with improved soil condition and increased grain yield.

Field experiment on Tomato-Okra-Indian spinach cropping pattern was     conducted at a farmer’s homestead of Tangail (AEZ 8) during 2007-08 and 2008-09 to find out a suitable combination of chemical fertilizers and organic manure for sustainable crop yield. There were 5 treatments comprising different percentages of the recommended chemical fertilizers (RCF) with two levels (0 and 5 t/ha) for tomato and three levels (0, 2.5 and 5 t/ha) for okra each of poultry manure and cowdung. No organic manure was used for the third crop Indian Spinach. The treatments were arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. An amount of 75% dose of RCF (N150P40K80S20Zn2B1 kg/ha) along with poultry manure @ 5 t/ha appeared as the best suited combination providing tomato yield 95.3 t/ha and 88.2 t/ha for the first year and  second year, respectively. Again, an amount of 75% dose of RCF(N120P35K70S15Zn2B1 kg/ha) along with poultry manure @ 2.5 t/ha appeared as the best package providing the highest okra yield (15.03 t/ha and 12.98 t/ha). The highest yield (36.3 t/ha and 33.7 t/ha for the first and second year, respectively) of Indian Spinach was recorded from (75% recommended N + PM residue), which was statistically identical with (100 % recommended N), but significantly higher over rest of the treatments. Poultry manure performed better over cow dung. A package of 75% recommended chemical fertilizer along with 5 t PM/ha appeared as the best suited combination providing higher yield and economic return. A series of on-farm fi eld experiments were conducted in two locations in Padang, Koto Panjang and Koto Tingga, West Sumatera, Indonesia in 2015. The purpose of the experiment was to establish the formula of organic fertilizer derived from Tithonia supplied with micro nutrients, Zn and Mn, on rice. The experiments were conducted using completely-randomized block design with six treatments and three replications. The treatments were P = Tithonia Organic Fertilizer Plus (TOFP) + 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1, Q = TOFP + 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1+ 3.0 kg Zn.ha-1, R = TOFP + 4.5 kg Mn.ha-1 + 6 kg Zn.ha-1, S= TOFP + 4.5 kg Mn.ha-1+ 9 kg Zn.ha-1, T = TOFP only, U = 100% chemical fertilizer only. Treatment with micro nutrients as addition to TOFP (TOFP+ 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1 and TOFP+ 3.0 kg Mn.ha-1+3.0 kg Zn.ha-1) increased rice grain yield by 80 g per clump.

The use of natural hormone of sprout extract, coconut water, and banana stem extract and application of cow biourine has been introduced as an innovation to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers to increase the productivity of shallot. This study aims to compare the growth and yield of shallot with chemical fertilizer treatment and that of shallot treated with combination of natural hormone and cow biourine. The study was conducted in Temon Wetan, Temon, Kulon Progo, Special Region of Yogyakarta using a Complete Randomized Block Design, which consists of two factors and one control (chemical fertilizer). The first factor is a natural hormone: sprout extract, banana stem extract and coconut water. The second factor is the concentration of cow biourine: 30%, 40%, and 50%. Data were analyzed using diversity at 5% level, Orthogonal Contras at 5% level and DMRT Test with 5% level. It was revealed that the control group with a combined treatments was not significantly different from the growth and yield of shallot of the group with chemical fertilizers. Types of treatments with natural hormone and cow biourine concentrations provided the same growth and yield as that of chemical fertilizer.

An experiment was conducted to assess the performance of sweet pepper varieties as influenced by nitrogen levels from August 2014 to February 2015 at Mangalpur, Chitwan. The experiment was laid out in two factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications having sixteen treatments. Varieties and levels of nitrogen significantly affected growth, yield and qualitative parameters of fruits. Hybrid Indra and NS 632 performed better than open pollinated varieties viz. Sagar and California Wonder. Days to fifty percent flowering of NS 632 were earlier than California Wonder. Indra variety had the highest plant height (52.18 cm), number of secondary branches per plant (13.51) from 250 kg N/ha through chemical fertilizer while number of leaves per plant was higher in NS 632 variety (57.22) than Sagar variety (47.37). Indra variety showed the highest fruit weight (87.59 g) and total yield (39.45 t/ha) but NS 632 variety produced more number of fruits per plant (9.25) than California Wonder variety. This study showed that sweet pepper yield of hybrid varieties applied with 250 kg N/ha through chemical fertilizer was appropriate dose to get optimum yield under Chitwan condition.

A field experiment was conducted during  autumn season 2018 at Al Salam district, Maysan governorate. The aim was to evaluate some growth properties and grain yield of  three varieties of cowpea, Vigna sinensis L. (Local, Patton Boa and Atta E) grown under different levels of potassium sulphate  (0, 43, 86 and 129 kg h-1). The  experimental  design was applied according to the random complete block design in a split arrangement (Split Plots in RCBD). In on hand, the results showed a significant differences between the varieties. The local variety significantly gave highest plant length , leaf area, pods number, seeds number pod-1 and grain yield and which were 60.75cm, 2936.81cm2, 39.60 pod. plant-1, 7.69 seed pod-1, 99.93 g and 4.16 t. h-1 respectively. While the varieties Baton Boa gave highest weight of 100 seeds and gave 37.58 g. In other hand, as compare to the control, the addition of potassium up to 129 kg. h-1 lead to significant increase in plant length, leaf area, pods plant-1, seeds number pod-1 and grain yield plant-1 and total grain yield which were 53.33 cm, 3455.91 cm2, 51.61 pod. plant-1, 8.76 seed. pod-1, 125.93 g. and 5.25 T.h-1 respectively. Whereas, the control treatment (K0) gave the highest weight of 100 seeds (45.11 g). The Interaction between varieties and potassium  had a significant effect on almost  growth and yield characteristics.
