In South Africa, abacavir (ABC) is currently recommended as part of first- and second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV-positive paediatric patients. Concerns about overprescribing of the drug, particularly to adults, led to an analysis of ABC use in public sector ART programmes. We investigated current prescription of the drug to adults and children accessing ART in 4 public sector programmes across Gauteng Province, South Africa. ABC was almost exclusively prescribed to children initiating ART and adults requiring regimen changes due to drug toxicities. Patterns of ABC use among HIV-positive paediatric patients followed national ART treatment guidelines on the application of the drug. Although ABC is commonly used in the private sector for adults, the current national ART treatment guidelines for adults and adolescents should include ABC as an alternative to standard first- or second-line ART.

Phys. J. Appl. Phys. 92, 30302 (2020) https://doi.org/10.1051/epjap/2020200207. published online 17 December 2020 At the request of the Authors, the following article has been retracted. The following article has been retracted. Shortly after publication, the Editorial Board of EPJ Applied Physics received comments from a specialist in electron microscopy and analysis. He pointed out that the paper presented severe errors dealing with the microanalysis spectrum presented in one of the figures. As a conclusion, the presented EDS spectrum could not correspond to the studied sample. After careful consideration, the Editorial Board of EPJ Applied Physics asked for the retraction of this paper, due to the fundamental nature of the mistakes in the data and analysis of EDS spectrum, upon which the conclusion of the paper was incorrectly found. The Authors accept this decision and request the retraction of the paper.

The purpose of this study was to assess and explore the contributing factors of non- adherence among male patients on Antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment at Katutura Health Centre, Khomas Region. The objectives of this study were to determine and describe the factors contributing to non-adherence of ART treatment among male patients at Katutura Health Centre .Data were collected using the structured questionnaires.A purposive sampling technique was used. The collected data were entered in data sets and analyzed using Statistical (SPSS) version 23.0 software to describe the phenomena and to assess the magnitude of ART non-adherence among male patients. The study concluded that non-adherence of ART treatment among male patients in Katutura Health Centre, Khomas region is caused by different factors, such as, lack of food among patients on ART treatment, lack of transportation to the health facility for treatment and alcohol abuse. Therefore practical preventative interventions such as community education program should be developed and implemented to improve and ensure ART adherence.
