Repellent activity of different solvent extracts of Zingiber cassumunar rhizome and leaf against Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum were conducted. The results indicated that both the insect species were repelled by Z. cassumunar rhizome and leaf extracts. Among these, acetone extracts of rhizome showed highest repellency to T. castaneum than those of other extract tested. Petroleum ether extracts of Z. cassumunar leaf acted as repulsive to T. castaneum whereas other extracts exhibited weak to moderate effects to the beetles. All the extracts of leaf produced weak to moderate effects to T. confusum however, methanol extract of leaf showed little effect to the bettles. An experiment was carried out to investigate the efficacy of contact toxicity of different fractions of petroleum ether extract of Zinziber cassumunar Roxb. rhizome against Tribolium castaneum. Seventy-eight different fractions of petroleum ether extract were obtained from column chromatography. Elutes having the similar TLC behavior were combined in eight fractions and were named as: MN-1, MN-2, MN-3, MN-4, MN-5, MN-6, MN-7 and MN-8. Four separate fractions were collected from the MN-1 fraction by preparative thin layer chromatography. These four parts were washed with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol. Thereafter, these were separated by small column and designated as: M1N1, M1N2, M1N3, M1N4, M2N1, M2N2, M2N3, M2N4, M3N1, M3N2, M3N3, M3N4, M4N1 and M4N2. Fractions of M1N2, M2N2, M3N2 and M4N2 were found to be the most effective against the beetle T. castaneum after 24, 48 and 72 hours. The present study is to evaluate the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial activity of Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extract using petroleum ether, methanol and water as solvents. The antimicrobial activity of P. amboinicus leaf extracts were examined against the selected bacterial and fungal isolates namely Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans using agar well diffusion method. FT –IR analysis was performed to identify the presence of functional groups in the methanol extract. The results of the study revealed the presence of distinctive active secondary metabolites in the tested leaf extract. The results revealed that the methanol extract exhibited maximum antimicrobial activity against the tested bacterial and fungal isolates when compared with aqueous and petroleum ether extracts. The FT-IR analysis reveals the presence of functional groups such as hydroxyl, amines, alkynes, ketones and carboxylic acid in the methanolic extract of P. amboinicus. Thus, P. amboinicus leaves are effective against the selected microbes and recommends that the plant derived phytochemicals are comparatively safer than synthetic alternative, thereby contributing insightful remedial benefits for the treatment of diseases.

Abstract A survey was carried out between March and August 2010 to identify insect pests of stored yam chips in Ogbomoso Metropolis, Nigeria. Dried yam chips were randomly obtained from old stocks in 6 local markets within the metropolis on monthly basis. There was a significant (P < 0.05) difference in insect abundance based on month of sampling and insect species. Dinoderus porcellus (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) was the most abundant species. Other species encountered were Araecerus fasciculatus (Degeer) (Coleoptera: Anthribidae), Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). When chips were infested with Dinoderus porcellus and stored for 3 months, reconstituted thick paste (amala) was made from the flour and was evaluated for consumers’ acceptability. Sensory characteristics such as odour, colour, texture, appearance, taste and overall acceptability were significantly (P < 0.05) affected when compared with the paste prepared from the uninfested chips.

The insecticidal and repellent activity tests of the chloroform extracts of fruit, leaf, root and stem of Urena sinuata L. against the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum L. adults have been conducted. The leaf, root and stem extracts showed high toxicity by giving mortality of the beetles within 30 min. of exposure. The LD50 values for the 12, 24, 36 and 48h of exposures were 0.354, 0.262, 0.209 and 0.196mg cm2 for the fruit extract; 0.587, 0.413, 0.355 and 0.299mg cm2 for the leaf extract; 0.440, 0.389, 0.340 and 0.268mg cm2 for the root extract and 0.968, 0.661, 0.491 and 0.362mg cm2 for the stem extract. The insecticidal activity can be arranged in the order of fruit> root> leaf> stem extracts. The root and stem showed repellent activity against T. castaneum adults at P<0.01 and P<0.05 levels of significance, while the fruit and the leaf extracts did not show repellency at all. The chloroform extracts of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), ajowain (Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Link.) and fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-grecum L.) were tested against the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) adults through residual film assay and their repellent activity were also conducted. The LD50 values for coriander, ajowain and fenugreek were 316.173 and 243.5895, 271.4573 and 232.7095, and 159.0106 and 4.194236 ?g/cm2 for 24- and 48 h of exposure respectively. According to the intensity of activity the toxicity were found in the order of fenugreek> ajowain >coriander, while the repellent activities were in the order of fenugreek> coriander> ajowain. Fecundity and egg viability of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) females were significantly (P<0.01) reduced by synthetic pyrethroids and an alkaloid containing insecticide nimbicidine. In control, the average number of eggs laid by each female/day was 12.18. The lowest number of eggs laid by each female/day was noted as 4.38 when combining nimbicidine with two pyrethroids i.e., cypermethrin and deltamethrin. The percentage of egg hatching without insecticide treatment was 95%. The lowest percent of egg hatching was 63.95 when the adult female was fed on flour medium treated with combined doses of cypermethrin, deltamethrin and nimbicidine. Among the treated insecticides, nimbicidine (80.69%) proved effective in reducing the fertility than those of cypermethrin (86.05%) and deltamethrin (88.52%). The antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of diethyl ether, 80% methanol and 50% acetone extracts of the leaves of three Amphoricarpos taxa (Asteraceae; A. neumayerianus, A. autariatus ssp. autariatus and A. autariatus ssp. bertisceus) from the Balkan Peninsula were investigated. The antimicrobial activity was determined by the broth microdilution assay against eight bacterial and eight fungal species. The in vitro antioxidative activity was assessed by the DPPH assay. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also determined. The most sensitive bacterial species were Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. The best antibacterial potential was obtained for the methanol extract of A. neumayerianus, while the diethyl ether extract of this species showed the lowest effect. In general, the tested extracts showed higher activity than the commercial antibiotics streptomycin and ampicillin. Also, all micromycetes were sensitive to the tested extracts. The most sensitive was Trichoderma viride. The highest and lowest antifungal effect was determined in A. a. ssp. autariatus for the diethyl ether and acetone extracts, respectively. The highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined in the methanol extract of A. a. autariatus. The best antioxidative activity was demonstrated by the methanol extract of A. a. ssp. autariatus as comparing to matching extracts from the other two taxa.

Petroleum (Pet.) ether, CHCl3 and CH3OH extracts of Cassia renigera Benth. were tested against Callosobruchus chinensis L. for dose-mortality and repellency; and against Sitophilus oryzae L. and Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) for repellent activity test. The Pet. ether extract of leaf was found active against C. chinensis adults through dose mortality assay and the LD50 values established were 9.270, 4.932, 2.032, 1.721, 1.671, 1.543, 1.513, 1.503 and 1.478 mg cm-2 for 0.5, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 h of exposure respectively. However, the leaf extracts of CHCl3 and CH3OH; as well as the Pet. ether, CHCl3 and CH3OH extracts of the stem-bark did not give mortality to the test organism. The CHCl3 extract of leaf showed repellent activity against Tribolium castaneum at 0.1% level of significance (P < 0.001), and the Pet. ether extracts of the leaf and the CH3OH extracts of the stem-bark offered repellency at 1% level of significance (P < 0.01) between dose levels. Only the CHCl3 extracts of the stem-bark gave repellency at 5% level of significance (P < 0.05), while the CH3OH extracts of leaf and Pet. ether extract of stem-bark did not show any significant repellency at all.
