A total of 65 specimens of Rhinomugil corsula (Hamilton, 1822), measuring from 8.1 cm to 28.9 cm in total length, collected from the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal, were used for the morphometric analysis during the period between March 2016 and February 2018. Twenty seven morphometric characters were selected and studied during the investigation period. The regression equations – both arithmetic and logarithmic – between the total length (TL) and 21 morphometric characters, and head length (HL) with five morphometric characters related to the head, were determined. The value of coefficient of correlation ‘r’ for each relationship was calculated and t-test for each ‘r’ value was also done. The relationships of the various measurements of the body with the total length – and head length with the five relevant characters -of R. corsula from the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal showed linear relationships, which were highly significant (P<0.01). The ranges of ‘b’ values 0.967 to 1.346 in case of the relationships between TL and 21 relevant characters, whereas 0.906 to 1.236 in case of the relationships between HL and 5 relevant characters. These values differ insignificantly (P>0.01) with typical value b=1 indicating isometric relationships among the characters. Bangladesh J. Zool. 49 (2): 229-241, 2021

Abstract Schizothorax labiatus (McClelland) is considered to be one of the most economically important fish species among Schizothorax spp. A total of twenty-four morphometric and five meristic characters were examined; 18 of the morphometric characters as percentages of total length and four characters as percentages of head length were studied. It was found that the characters of standard length, fork length, pre pelvic length, pre anal length, and pre dorsal length had the highest correlations with total length, whereas dorsal fin height followed by caudal fin height had the lowest correlations. In percentages of head length post orbital length had the highest correlation whereas snout length had the lowest correlation. Overall, the results revealed that all the morphometric characters exhibited linear relationships and depicted significantly (P < 0.05) high degree of correlation, while the meristic characters counted were constant in all sizes of S. labiatus, indicating that they were independent of body size. The study provided basic information that will be useful for fish biologists and researchers in the future management and conservation of this fish species.

The morphometric observations were made on total length, standard length, pre-caudal length, head length, eye diameter and depth of body at pectoral fin base of estuarine catfish M. gulio. Males and females showed homogeneity in characters. A linear relationship was found between total length and morphometric characters. Regression of length and weight did not deviate significantly from cube law indicating isometric growth. The fish exhibited sexual dimorphism. Morphometric characters and meristic count of a fish, Tor tor (Hamilton Buchanan) have been studied from river Ujh, a tributary of river Ravi in District Kathua, (J&K). Collection of samples on monthly basis was conducted for the study of morphological characters of Tor tor. Present study shows some deviations with respect to few morphometric characters and meristic counts that have been aptly discussed in the following discussion. The positive correlation has been observed between total length and external body parts. The highly strong correlated body parameter in relation to total length is standard length (r = 0.98) and least correlated with eye diameter (r = 0.32) and the highly correlated external body part in relation to standard length is caudal length (r = 0.96) and least correlated part is eye diameter (r = 0.35) and also strong correlation was observed between head length and maximum body depth (r = 0.93) and least correlation between head length and eye diameter (r = 0.23). The correlation analysis shows that all the morphometric characters change proportionally with increase in the total length. These results act as baseline data on morphometry of Tor tor which helps in easy identification and will be beneficial for the development of conservational strategies of the natural stocks of Tor tor in river Ujh, Kathua (J&K).

Ikan ekor pedang bukan merupakan ikan asli Indonesia. Ikan ini berasal dari Amerika Tengah dan dilaporkan menyebabkan kerugian di beberapa perairan yang dihuninya. Ikan ekor pedang merupakan ikan kedua yang paling banyak tertangkap di Danau Buyan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap karakter morfometrik dan meristik, hubungan panjang bobot dan hubungan panjang total-panjang baku pada dua varian ikan ekor pedang di Danau Buyan yang memiliki warna tubuh yang berbeda. Penelitian dilakukan pada bulan Januari sampai April 2018. Ikan yang diamati berjumlah 160 ekor. Pengamatan meliputi pengukuran 12 karakter morfometrik tradisional, 14 karakter truss morphometric, penghitungan empat karakter meristik, dan penimbangan bobot. Panjang total ikan ekor pedang jantan dan betina pada varian I adalah 43,94 - 79,47 mm dan 43,81 - 115,80 mm dengan nilai b= 2,90 dan b= 2,98. Kemudian, panjang total ikan ekor pedang pada varian II adalah 45,76 - 83,91 mm untuk ikan jantan dan 41,43 - 88,49 mm untuk ikan betina dengan nilai b= 2,80 dan b= 3,07. Karakter meristik pada kedua varian ikan ekor pedang baik jantan dan betina adalah D. 12-13 ; A. 8 - 9. Hubungan panjang bobot ikan ekor pedang pada kedua varian menunjukan pertumbuhan isometrik. Berdasarkan pengamatan dalam penelitian ini, diketahui tidak terdapat perbedaan pada dua varian ikan ekor pedang di Danau Buyan.Green swordtail is not originally from Indonesia, but from Central America. This fish was reported harmful in some freshwater ecosystem. Green swordtail was the second most caught fish in Buyan Lake. The aims of this research were to reveal morphometric and meristic characters, length-weight relationship and total length-standard length relationship on two variants of green swordtail with the different color in Buyan Lake. This research was conducted from January to April 2018 in Buyan Lake. The number of measured and weighed fish were 160 individuals. There were 12 traditional morphometric characters, 14 truss morphometric characters, and four meristic characters observed. Respectively, the total length for green swordtail variant I male and female were 43.94 - 79.47 mm and 43.81 - 115.80 mm. The b value for both of the variant I were 2.90 and 2.98. For the variant II, the total length was 45.76 - 83.91 mm for male fish and 41.43 - 88.49 for female. The b value for variant II were 2.80 and 3.07 for male and female respectively. Meristic characters for all variant and sex was D 12 - 13; A 8 - 9. The growth pattern was isometric. There is no difference in the body shape between the variant of green swordtail fish.

This study deals with the length-weight relationship and relative condition factor (Kn) of 2480 specimens of Rhinomugil corsula (Hamilton, 1822), ranging from 3.5 cm to 29.5 cm total length and 0.40 g to 235.34 g weight, sampled monthly for two years period from March 2016 to February 2018 from the Sitakunda Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. Arithmetic form of equations for length (TL) and weight (W) of fish showed curvilinear relationships in male: W=0.0081TL3.016, female: W= 0.0083TL3.058 and combined sex: W=0.0076TL3.052, while logarithmic scale showed linear relationships in male: LogW=-2.122+3.016LogTL, female: LogW=-2.09+3.058 TL and combined sex: LogW=-2.121+3.052TL. In all the cases the coefficient of correlations between length and weight were positive and highly significant (P<0.01). The regression coefficient ‘b’ values were found to be 3.01±0.11, 3.06±0.12 and 3.05±0.12 for male, female and combined sexes, respectively for two years period together. When ‘t’ test was done, the growth was found to be isometric in case of male and combined sex and positive allometric in case of female. The relative condition factor (Kn) varied from 1.0003-1.009, 1.001-1.008 and 1.001-1.008, respectively, for male, female and combined sex in 2016-17, whereas 1.001-1.007, 1.003-1.006 and 0.992-1.008 respectively in 2017-18. The Kn values were always around ‘1’ or a little bit more than ‘1’ for length groups as well as monthly, indicating the excellent growth and robustness of fish due to favorable environmental condition prevailing in the habitat of the fish, in the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal. Anthropometric measurements vary in different races, sex and age groups. Stature is one of the various parameters of identification. Estimation of stature from measurement of various body parts is of immense important to the forensic experts. It is known that there a close relationship exists between the height of an individual and various parts of the body like head, trunk, upper and lower extremities. The aim of this study is to estimate the relationship between the stature and head length. This study was conducted on 200 (100 males, 100 females) medical students of age groups 18-25 years at SPMC Medical College, Bikaner (Rajasthan). Height and head length were measured and Pearson correlation was used to see correlation. Head length and height are positively correlated among boys and girls and it is statistically highly significant. When both boys and girls were combined it also showed positive correlation which is statistically highly significant. This study shows that there is a strong association between height and head length. Simple regression equations generated from head length can be a supplementary approach for stature estimation when extremities are not available and will be useful for anatomists, archaeologists, anthropologists and forensic scientists. Predictive regression equations were generated to estimate total length of the Argentine seabass (Acanthistius patachonicus) using skull and pectoral girdle bones, specific body, and otolith lengths. Regressions of skull and pectoral girdle bones, specific body and otolith lengths were all statistically significant. Generating regressions between specific bones and external characteristics of the body meaningfully increases the ability to analyse the information obtained from studies of stomach contents of predator fish from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

The prediction of live body weight from six body measurements was studied using the Cobb broiler strain. A total of two hundred and sixty four chicks comprising of one hundred and thirty four at males and females were used. Mean body weights day-old, 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks of age were 36.7g, 276.16g, 856.72, 1,334.1g and 1,762g respectively for the sexes combined. Males were generally more uniform in body weight and the body measurements than the females as indicated by the lower coefficient of variability (2.53% vs 3.38% for body weight at 3 weeks of age). The males were slightly (P<0.05) heavier than the females at 9 and 12 weeks of age. Cumulative weight gain was more rapid between 3 and 6 weeks of age and decreased with age up to the 12th week. The correlations, linear and stepwise regression equations reveal linear relationships between body weight and all body measurements (Body length, Body girth, Keel length, Shank length, Drumstick length and Shank thickness). Live body weight of bird was best predicted singly using keel length at 3 and 9 weeks of age and body girth and the 12th week. However with a combination of two to four of the body measurements, the prediction efficiency was enhanced.

Abstract We study size-at-age and sexual variability of morphometric characteristics of the marsh frog. According to the size of the body, males were divided into three size-age groups (juvenis, subadultus, adultus), females — into four groups (juvenis, subadultus, adultus, adultus-I). We found that the chronological age of frogs (skeletochronology) does not always correspond to their biological age (size and proportions of the body). We noted that the semi-adult males are reliably larger than females by mean values of 26 studied morphometric characters. Males and females of “adultus” group do not differ by linear body size, significant differences were found in body proportions (7 characters). For the females of “adultus-I” group, the mean values of 26 characters are significantly larger than for “adultus” males. The results of our study showed that with the age of the marsh frog, the level of exhibition, directionality and structure of morphometric sex differences changes.

A total of 1329 Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) were measured for total length, 1340 for chest girth, 1317 for hind foot, 618 for shoulder height, and 1219 for ear length. Five hundred and four moose were weighed. These data were classified by sex, age, month sampled, and location. Growth rates were plotted and discussed. No morphometric differences were detected by sex and location classifications up to age 36 months. Location differences were detected which corresponded to general condition, productivity, and condition related blood parameters of the populations. Seasonal weight patterns demonstrated increases from 21 to 55% from spring to late fall. Measurements, particularly total lengths, were better indicators of growth rate than were weights. All body measurements were significantly correlated with weight: total length, r (correlation coefficient) = 0.94; chest girth, r = 0.90; shoulder height, r = 0.87; and hind foot, r = 0.81. Combined sex regression equations were derived because the slight differences between the male and female regression lines were unimportant in field application. These regression equations were as follows: weight (kilograms) = −239.7 + 2.07(total length); weight (kilograms) = −245.3 + 3.14(chest girth).
