Abstract Schizothorax labiatus (McClelland) is considered to be one of the most economically important fish species among Schizothorax spp. A total of twenty-four morphometric and five meristic characters were examined; 18 of the morphometric characters as percentages of total length and four characters as percentages of head length were studied. It was found that the characters of standard length, fork length, pre pelvic length, pre anal length, and pre dorsal length had the highest correlations with total length, whereas dorsal fin height followed by caudal fin height had the lowest correlations. In percentages of head length post orbital length had the highest correlation whereas snout length had the lowest correlation. Overall, the results revealed that all the morphometric characters exhibited linear relationships and depicted significantly (P < 0.05) high degree of correlation, while the meristic characters counted were constant in all sizes of S. labiatus, indicating that they were independent of body size. The study provided basic information that will be useful for fish biologists and researchers in the future management and conservation of this fish species.

A total of 65 specimens of Rhinomugil corsula (Hamilton, 1822), measuring from 8.1 cm to 28.9 cm in total length, collected from the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal, were used for the morphometric analysis during the period between March 2016 and February 2018. Twenty seven morphometric characters were selected and studied during the investigation period. The regression equations – both arithmetic and logarithmic – between the total length (TL) and 21 morphometric characters, and head length (HL) with five morphometric characters related to the head, were determined. The value of coefficient of correlation ‘r’ for each relationship was calculated and t-test for each ‘r’ value was also done. The relationships of the various measurements of the body with the total length – and head length with the five relevant characters -of R. corsula from the Sitakunda coast of the Bay of Bengal showed linear relationships, which were highly significant (P<0.01). The ranges of ‘b’ values 0.967 to 1.346 in case of the relationships between TL and 21 relevant characters, whereas 0.906 to 1.236 in case of the relationships between HL and 5 relevant characters. These values differ insignificantly (P>0.01) with typical value b=1 indicating isometric relationships among the characters. Bangladesh J. Zool. 49 (2): 229-241, 2021

Abstract Morphometric and meristic characters are very important for the identification of any fish specimen. The present study aims to describe the morphometric and meristic characters of the indigenous fish Crossocheilus diplochilus (Heckel) from Dal Lake. This fish is commonly known as Kashmir latia and is called tether locally. In the present study, the material analyzed was 70 specimens ranging in size from 6.9–13 cm (TL) with a mean length of 10.8 cm and a weight range of 3.2–24.0 g with a mean weight of 10.1 g. The parameters with the highest correlations with total length were standard length and fork length at 0.983 and 0.989, respectively. Correlation analysis showed that all morphometric characters changed proportionally as total length increased. The meristic counts analyzed in the present study remained constant in fish of different sizes indicating that they are independent of body size. The study of morphometric characters is very important to determine the growth rate of these fish, which, in turn, is required to properly manage its populations.

The morphometric observations were made on total length, standard length, pre-caudal length, head length, eye diameter and depth of body at pectoral fin base of estuarine catfish M. gulio. Males and females showed homogeneity in characters. A linear relationship was found between total length and morphometric characters. Regression of length and weight did not deviate significantly from cube law indicating isometric growth. The fish exhibited sexual dimorphism. Length and weight measurement for 31f ish species encountered in the Arabian Sea , o f f t h e Oma n Coast, were collected by demersal trawling during March 2007 and March 2008. A total of 3,261 specimens were measured for total length, or fork length, where appropriate, and green weight. Several commonly caught commercial species undergo onboard processing (dressing) prior to packaging, and dressed weight to green weight regressions and conversion factors were calculated for 12 of these species. The relationships obtained in this study were compared with those of other  studies for the same fish species. These data are fundamental to understanding the biological parameters of fishes, and can be applied to fisheries stock assessment and management models.

The aim of this article was to some morphometric characteristics of Rhodeus amarus from Dinsiz Stream. A morphological analysis of 21 morphometric characters were done. These characteristics  total length (TL); fork length (FL); standard length (SL); predorsal length; dorsal fin base length; dorsal fin length; head length; pretorbital length; eye diameter; postorbital length; interorbital distance; body height; preanal distance; anal fin base length; anal fin length; pectoral fin base length; pectoral fin length; ventral fin base length; ventral fin length; caudal peduncle depth and weight (W). The samples were measured weight to the nearest 0.01 g and total, fork and standard length to the nearest 0.01 mm. The total length (TL) and weight (W min-max) of the fish were 4.2- 7.1 cm and 1.699- 7.444 g, respectively.Keywords: Rhodeus amarus; European bitterling; morphometric properties; Dinsiz Stream Turkey

The mean values of total length (75.89 ± 13.09 mm), standard length (54.98 ± 7.07 mm), fork length (60.86 ± 9.14 mm), head length (14.75 ± 2.05 mm), snout length (3.79 ± 0.61 mm), pre-dorsal length (31.53 ± 3.18 mm), height of body (20.2 ± 4.11 mm) and total weight (6.62 ± 3.55g) of combined sex of Puntius chola were calculated. Relationships between total length and standard length, fork length, head length, snout length and pre-dorsal length of Puntius chola were found to be linear, positive and highly significant. The length-weight relationship in male, female and combined sex were determined as Log W=-4.510+2.810 Log L, LogW=-4.204+2.685 Log L and Log W=4.465+2.808 Log L respectively. The mean values of condition factor from observed value (ko) of male, female and combined sex were determined as 1.36 ± 0.089, 1.599 ± 0.181 and 1.515 ± 0.192 respectively. The mean values of condition factor from calculated value (kc) of male, female and combined sex were found to be 1.362 ± 0.054, 1.6 ± 0.124 and 1.511 ± 0.075 respectively. The mean values of relative condition factor of male, female and combined sex were registered as 0.999 ± 0.044 , 0.999 ± 0.064 and 0.999 ± 0.112 respectively. Sex ratio was found to be 1:1. Morphometric characters and meristic count of a fish, Tor tor (Hamilton Buchanan) have been studied from river Ujh, a tributary of river Ravi in District Kathua, (J&K). Collection of samples on monthly basis was conducted for the study of morphological characters of Tor tor. Present study shows some deviations with respect to few morphometric characters and meristic counts that have been aptly discussed in the following discussion. The positive correlation has been observed between total length and external body parts. The highly strong correlated body parameter in relation to total length is standard length (r = 0.98) and least correlated with eye diameter (r = 0.32) and the highly correlated external body part in relation to standard length is caudal length (r = 0.96) and least correlated part is eye diameter (r = 0.35) and also strong correlation was observed between head length and maximum body depth (r = 0.93) and least correlation between head length and eye diameter (r = 0.23). The correlation analysis shows that all the morphometric characters change proportionally with increase in the total length. These results act as baseline data on morphometry of Tor tor which helps in easy identification and will be beneficial for the development of conservational strategies of the natural stocks of Tor tor in river Ujh, Kathua (J&K).

Twenty-two morphometric and nine meristic characters of 280 Gudusia chapra (Total length 30-210mm) and 264 Gonialosa manmina (Total length 40-150 mm), the two important clupeids from the Kaptai lake, were studied during 1996-1997 to detect the plastic and non-plastic characters. Wide and medium range characters are plastic characters and hence are controlled by the environment while the narrow range characters are genetically controlled and non-plastic and hence can be used for differentiation of stock or sub-species. Three different categories of morphometric characters of the two species were recognised, viz., wide range, medium range and narrow range. Wide range morphometric characters varied within the range of 21.47% to 140.62% in the case of G. chapra and 24.04% to 87.19% in the case of G. manmina while the medium range characters varied within the range of 11.76% to 13.75% in the case of G. chapra and 11.55% to 18.92% in the case of G. manmina and less than 10% range characters were designated as narrow range. The relationships between the different morphometric characters (both dependent and independent variables) were found to be linear and in all the cases the relationships were found to be highly significant (P< 0.001). This study exhibits relationships between length-weight and length-length for 21 fish species caught in Izmir Bay. Coefficients a and b for the length-weight relationships (LWRs) and length-length relationships (LLRs) were calculated with W=aLb formulae and as equations of TL=a+bFL and TL=a+bSL respectively. Equations of length-length for converting standard length and fork length into total length and vice versa were proven linear. The involved relationships were significantly interrelated (R2&gt;0.942). Values b in the LWRs varied from 2.21 to 3.96 (mean ± SE: 3.15 ± 0.08). The student’s t-test showed that 87.9% of values b were significantly different from 3.

Ikan ekor pedang bukan merupakan ikan asli Indonesia. Ikan ini berasal dari Amerika Tengah dan dilaporkan menyebabkan kerugian di beberapa perairan yang dihuninya. Ikan ekor pedang merupakan ikan kedua yang paling banyak tertangkap di Danau Buyan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap karakter morfometrik dan meristik, hubungan panjang bobot dan hubungan panjang total-panjang baku pada dua varian ikan ekor pedang di Danau Buyan yang memiliki warna tubuh yang berbeda. Penelitian dilakukan pada bulan Januari sampai April 2018. Ikan yang diamati berjumlah 160 ekor. Pengamatan meliputi pengukuran 12 karakter morfometrik tradisional, 14 karakter truss morphometric, penghitungan empat karakter meristik, dan penimbangan bobot. Panjang total ikan ekor pedang jantan dan betina pada varian I adalah 43,94 - 79,47 mm dan 43,81 - 115,80 mm dengan nilai b= 2,90 dan b= 2,98. Kemudian, panjang total ikan ekor pedang pada varian II adalah 45,76 - 83,91 mm untuk ikan jantan dan 41,43 - 88,49 mm untuk ikan betina dengan nilai b= 2,80 dan b= 3,07. Karakter meristik pada kedua varian ikan ekor pedang baik jantan dan betina adalah D. 12-13 ; A. 8 - 9. Hubungan panjang bobot ikan ekor pedang pada kedua varian menunjukan pertumbuhan isometrik. Berdasarkan pengamatan dalam penelitian ini, diketahui tidak terdapat perbedaan pada dua varian ikan ekor pedang di Danau Buyan.Green swordtail is not originally from Indonesia, but from Central America. This fish was reported harmful in some freshwater ecosystem. Green swordtail was the second most caught fish in Buyan Lake. The aims of this research were to reveal morphometric and meristic characters, length-weight relationship and total length-standard length relationship on two variants of green swordtail with the different color in Buyan Lake. This research was conducted from January to April 2018 in Buyan Lake. The number of measured and weighed fish were 160 individuals. There were 12 traditional morphometric characters, 14 truss morphometric characters, and four meristic characters observed. Respectively, the total length for green swordtail variant I male and female were 43.94 - 79.47 mm and 43.81 - 115.80 mm. The b value for both of the variant I were 2.90 and 2.98. For the variant II, the total length was 45.76 - 83.91 mm for male fish and 41.43 - 88.49 for female. The b value for variant II were 2.80 and 3.07 for male and female respectively. Meristic characters for all variant and sex was D 12 - 13; A 8 - 9. The growth pattern was isometric. There is no difference in the body shape between the variant of green swordtail fish.
