?-tocopherol (1), ?-tocopherol (2), polyprenol-12 (3), polyprenol-15 (4), stigmasterol and ?-sitosterol were isolated from the yellow flavicarpa variety of leaves of Passiflora edulis. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using 1H-NR and 13C-NMR spectral analysis. The organic and aqueous soluble fractions of crude methanolic extract were evaluated for the antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic and antimicrobial activities. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the aqueous soluble fraction displayed maximum activity having IC50 value of 139.56?g/ml. On the other hand, dichloromethane soluble fraction revealed maximum cytotoxic (LC50 24.17?g/ml) and thrombolytic (14.49% clot lysis) activities, when compared to the respective blanks.Dhaka Univ. J. The methanol extract of bark of Neolamarckia cadamba (Roxb.) and its organic and aqueous soluble partitionates were subjected to assays for antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic, membrane stabilizing, antimicrobial and analgesic activities. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the pet ether and carbon tetra chloride soluble partitionate of the methanolic extract demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 60.46 ?g/ml and 78.58 ?g/ml, respectively. On the other hand, the carbon tetrachloride and pet ether soluble fractions displayed the potential lethality to brine shrimps, having LC50 of 7.24 and 7.89 ?g/ml, as compared to standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.45 ?g/ml). During assay for thrombolytic property, the carbon tetrachloride and aqueous soluble materials revealed 66.36 % and 64.25 % clot lysis of human blood, respectively. In the membrane stabilizing assay, the carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction inhibited 86.79 % haemolysis of human RBCs in hypotonic solution-induced condition, while the aqueous soluble partitionate inhibited 92.39 % haemolysis of RBCs in the heat-induced condition. The crude methanolic extract of bark of N. cadamba showed significant central and peripheral analgesic activity at both 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight, whereas its chloroform soluble fraction mildly inhibited the growth of test microorganisms. Bergenia ciliata is an essential medicinal plant used in regions where western medicines are inaccessible due to their unavailability and high cost. The methanolic extract of Bergenia ciliataroots was separated for phytochemical elements and in-vitro antioxidant activity. The plant extract showed the rich outgrowth of secondary metabolites that play the role for biological activities. The higher antioxidant functioning of the plant is due to the occurrence of reactive elements like phenols and flavonoids. The antioxidant functioning of the plant extract was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay the IC50 value of Bergenia ciliata was found to be 11.21μg/mL, while the IC50 value of standard ascorbic acid was found to be 45.93μg/mL

Chloroform and petroleum ether soluble fractions of the crude methanolic extract of the fruits of Baccaurea ramiflora (Lour.) have been investigated for the evaluation of cytotoxic and antioxidant activity. Brine shrimp lethality bioassay was used to evaluate the cytotoxic activity and free radical scavenging activity method was used to evaluate antioxidant activity. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the chloroform soluble fraction showed greater cytotoxic activity (LC50 value 74.2 µg/ml) than petroleum ether soluble fraction (LC50 value 129 µg/ml) compared to the standard drug vincristine sulfate (LC50 value 0.54 µg/ml). In free radical scavenging activity method (DPPH assay method), the chloroform soluble fraction showed greater antioxidant activity (IC50 value 49.78 µg/ml) than petroleum ether soluble fraction (IC50 value 75.31 µg/ml) compared to the standard antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (IC50 value 24.51µg/ml). This study reveals that Baccaurea ramiflora fruit possesses cytotoxic and antioxidant activity hence can be a potential source for the isolation of active principle(s) for different therapies.International Current Pharmaceutical Journal, May 2015, 4(6): 386-389

Bangladesh is a good repository of natural products. Numerous plants are available to facilitate the traditional treatments. Proper scientific evaluations are essential to explore the plant derived drugs. With this view, the crude methanol extract of leaves of Aganosma dichotoma (Roth) K. Schum. and its Kupchan fractions were screened for free radical scavenging, brine shrimp lethality, antimicrobial and thrombolytic activities. Among all extractives, the chloroform soluble fraction demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value 18.21 ?g/ml. Moreover, the chloroform soluble fraction showed significant brine shrimp lethality having LC50 value of 3.98 ?g/ml. On the other hand, the petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform soluble materials revealed mild to moderate antimicrobial activity with the zone of inhibition ranging from 7 to 14 mm. In the thrombolytic assay, the carbon tetrachloride soluble partitionate showed the highest clot lysis (30.48%). This is the first report of the comprehensive investigations of different extractives of A. dichotoma for the abovementioned bioassays. Objectives: Traditional medicines all over the world is revaluing nowadays by extensive research programs. To validate the traditional use, the active components in them need to be identified, characterized, and biologically evaluated. Stereospermum suaveolens, Hygrophila spinosa, and Naravelia zeylanica are important medicinal plants used by the ethnic people of Kerala against various ailments. The present study validates the ethnomedical uses of S. suaveolens, H. spinosa, and N. zeylanica by screening their antimicrobial, anthelmintic, and antioxidant properties.Method: All the analyses were done according to standard protocols.Results: The ethanolic extracts of their useful parts were investigated for antimicrobial activity against 10 human pathogenic microorganisms. All the three plants had shown prominent antimicrobial activities, and S. suaveolens exhibits comparatively more antifungal activity in their higher concentration (500 μg/mL). Anthelmintic efficiency of the plants was screened using Indian adult earthworm Pheretima posthuma. All of them had shown significant activity, and the highest was observed in S. suaveolens leaves. Antioxidant potential of the plants was screened using 2,2 diphenyl 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay and superoxide anion scavenging assay. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay, maximum radical scavenging was shown by S. suaveolens with IC50 value 61.6±2.3 μg/mL, and in superoxide anion scavenging assay, maximum activity was in N. zeylanica with IC50 value of 74.66±8.5 μg/mL.Conclusion: This study provides scientific evidence on the traditional use of S. suaveolens (leaves), H. spinosa (leaves), and N. zeylanica (aerial part) in treating microbial diseases, worm disturbances, and their potential as an antioxidant agent.

Methanolic extract of Curcuma amada leaves was investigated for isolation of secondary metabolites by successive chromatographic separation (VLC, column chromatography and TLC) which yielded several purified compounds. Among them the structures of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol were determined by analysis of high resolution 1H NMR spectroscopic data and co-TLC with authentic samples. The crude methanolic extract of C. amada leaves and its different fractionates i.e. petroleum ether (PESF), chloroform (CSF) and aqueous (AQSF) soluble fractions were evaluated for antibacterial, antioxidant, cytotoxic and thrombolytic activities. In antibacterial screening, the CSF exhibited the highest inhibition against bacterial growth having zone of inhibition 12 mm compared to the standard kanamycin where the zone of inhibition was observed at 18 mm against gram negative Vibrio mimicus. Significant free radical scavenging activity was also exhibited by CSF with the IC50 value of 103.09 μg/ml as compared to tert-butyl-1-hydroxytoluene (BHT) having IC50 31.88 μg/ml. In cytotoxicity study, the crude extract showed significant lethality towards brine shrimp having with the LC50 value of 6.540 μg/ml as compared to the standard vincristine sulfate (0.451μg/ml). In the study for thrombolytic property, different extracts of C. amada exhibited clot lysis ranging from 17.24 to 43.55% as compared to standard streptokinase (93.75 %). Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. Alternative medicine has become popular these days as it is gaining practices across the globe. Our studies aim to detect phytocompounds and biochemical activities of aqueous, dichloro methane, ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts of Terminalia chebula. Antioxidant, flurorescence and anitmicrobial studies were carried out for the phytocompounds. Methonolic extracts at 517nm exhibited maximum activity with 82% of free radical scavenging property. Methanolic extract also showed highest antimicrobial activity towards S.aureus of 7mm and S.pyogenes of 6mm respectiviely. Hence, it can be concluded that Terminalia chebula may be a promising candidate in pharmaceuticals and future medicine.

The methanol extracts of bark and leaves of Chukrasia tabularis and their organic and aqueous soluble materials were subjected to screenings for antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic, membrane stabilizing, antimicrobial, analgesic and antidiarrhoel activities. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the methanolic extract of bark of C. tabularis and the aqueous soluble fraction of methanol extract of leaves of C. tabularis revealed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 2.95 ?g/ml and 5.31 ?g/ml, respectively. The pet ether soluble fraction of methanolic extract of leaves and bark of C. tabularis displayed the highest cytotoxic potential having LC50 values 0.0167 ?g/ml and 3.89 ?g/ml, as compared to standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.45 ?g/ml). During thrombolytic assay, the aqueous soluble fraction of leaves and carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction of bark of C. tabularis showed 34.04% and 56.37% clot lysis, respectively. In the membrane stabilizing assay, the carbontetrachloride and aqueous soluble materials of methanol extract of leaf inhibited 21.03% and 49.68% hypotonic solution- and heat-induced haemolysis of RBC, respectively. The crude extract of leaves of C. tabularis exhibited mild antibacterial activity, while that of leaves and bark revealed significant central analgesic activity at 400 mg/kg body weight. The crude extracts demonstrated significant peripheral analgesic activity at 200- and 400- mg/kg body weight. The methanol extract of aerial parts of Dioscorea alata and its organic and aqueous soluble materials were subjected to screenings for antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic, membrane stabilizing and antimicrobial activities. The polyphenol content and DPPH free radical scavenging assay were conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activity. The total phenolic content was found to vary for different test samples ranging from 23.69 ± 0.25 to 26.60 ± 0.22 mg of GAE/gm of dried extract. In DPPH method the chloroform soluble fraction (CSF) of D. alata revealed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC5025.33 ± 0.05 μg/ml. The petroleum ether soluble fraction (PESF) exhibited highest cytotoxic potential having LC50 value of 6.1 μg/ml. During the membrane stabilizing assay, the aqueous soluble fraction (AQSF) inhibited 31.91% and 47.55% haemolysis of RBC in hypotonic solution- and heat-induced method, respectively. In thrombolytic assay, the chloroform soluble fraction (CSF) displayed 40.45% clot lysis. On the other hand the carbon tetrachloride (CTCSF) and chloroform soluble fraction (CSF) revealed mild to moderate antimicrobial activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 8 to 12 mm.Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 20(2): 200-204, 2017

Background: Medicinal plants represent a rich source of natural anti-oxidants. The traditional medicine involves the use of different plant extracts of bioactive constituents. Ficus benghalensis is a large evergreen tree found throughout India. It is commonly called Banyan tree. It is used in traditional system of medicine like Ayurveda and homoeopathy. Ficus is a huge tropical deciduous or evergreen tree with more than 800 species. Objective: Anti-oxidant effect of ethnomedicinal important plant species Ficus benghalensis (Family-Moraceae) was screened. The aim of this study was to assess the in-vitro potential of methanolic extract of Ficus benghalensis leaves as a natural anti-oxidant. Method: Assessment of in vitro anti-oxidant activity of methanolic leaves extract of Ficus benghalensis was determined by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Results: The methanolic extract of Ficus benghalensis leaves demonstrates a remarkable amount of phenolic content (54 μg/ml of GAE/100gm of extract) by using Folin-ciocalteu reagent. In-vitro anti-oxidant activity of methanolic leaves extract of Ficus benghalensis was determined by DPPH free radical scavenging assay, which showed significant anti-oxidant activity compared to standard anti-oxidant (ascorbic acid). A direct correlation between total phenol and anti-oxidant activity indicates polyphenols are the main anti-oxidants. Conclusion: These findings suggest the excellent medicinal bio-activity of Ficus benghalensis and explain the popularity of this plant in the folk medicine as a remedy for different disorders, thus supporting its folklore application as preventive remedy as an anti-oxidant. The present study shows that Ficus benghalensis leaves have radical scavenging activity and can be considered as good sources of natural anti-oxidants for medicinal and commercial uses.
