Introduction: Faculty development has become an essential part of any medical college for effective teaching-learning session. Centre for Medical Education (CME) has been organizing ‘teaching methodology’ workshop to train up the medical teachers in Bangladesh as a part of the faculty development programme. Objectives: To assess the students’ views regarding teaching performances of the teachers who had attended the workshop of CME. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in thirteen selected medical colleges of Bangladesh. Students’ opinions were collected by a structured questionnaire of 5-point Likert scale that included 13 separate positive statements regarding teaching performances. For each statement, the mean score was calculated and interpreted as, excellent ≥ 4, Good ≥ 3 to ≤ 4, satisfactory ≥ 2 to ≤ 3, unsatisfactory ≤ 2. But mean score ≤3 indicates deficit aspect of performances. Results: According to students’ aggregated views, teaching performances of 15% teachers were excellent, 51% were good, 25% were satisfactory and 9% were unsatisfactory. Conclusion: The trained teachers are not practising the expected standards in the tutorial classes in all aspects. Initiatives should be taken to pay more attention to deficit aspect of performances. Background: Teachers' training is a kind of education that helps the teachers to understand the basic theories of teachinglearning for escalating their knowledge, skills and abilities according to the learner's need.Objectives: The present study was undertaken to identify the students' perception about the teaching performances of the teachers who had gone through the training on teaching methodology at Centre for Medical Education (CME) in Bangladesh.Methods: This descriptive type of cross sectional study was conducted in thirteen public and private medical colleges of Bangladesh. A structured questionnaire based on 5-point Likert scale was used to collect the students' perceptions which included 13 separate positive statements regarding classroom performances. Statements having mean score of 4 or more are considered as positive aspect of performance. Statements with mean score 3 or less indicate the problem area of performance. Statement with a mean score in-between 3 and 4 might be emphasized for further improvement.Results: According to students' aggregated view, 38% of the teaching performances were excellent, 43% were good, 16% were satisfactory and 3% were unsatisfactory.Conclusion: To ensure excellence in all aspects of teaching performances a well-designed, updated and contextual training programme needs to be adopted for further improvement of teaching-learning.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.7(1) 2016: 14-19

This descriptive type of cross sectional study was conducted with the objective to study quality of current practices of large group teaching in selected medical colleges. This study was conducted at different government and non government medical colleges in the year 2007 adopting the convenient sampling using a checklist filled up by participatory observation at 36 lecture classes. The study revealed that the characteristics of the effective lecture are not strictly maintained in the present lecture classes in the medical colleges. Although due to time constraint the study was conducted at limited measure. The study reveals that more than thirty percent of the teachers did not attend any teaching methodology course. The medical colleges are lack in instructional media. More than twenty-seven percent teachers did not mention objectives at the beginning of the lecture. During informal interview some teachers expressed that mentioning objectives at the beginning is wastage of time. Some teacher's expressed that these methodologies of western culture do not fit in the context of Bangladesh due to limited resources, shortage of manpower and over crowding of students. More than eleven percent teachers did not use any visual aid and more than half of the teachers used visual that could not be read from the last bench. Fifty percent of the aid medical teachers do not summarize their lecture at the end. In seventeen percent lecture classes, the students only opened their mouth to respond to the attendance call. The study recommended that all the medical teachers should attend the teaching methodology course as a must. There should be regular visit to the medical colleges lecture galleries informally by authority concerned to ensure the required facilities of lecture classes. Students' evaluation, lecturers' self-rating may really trigger the teachers to identify their deficiencies, and can make real difference. Institute should ensure that teachers are given the support necessary for them to function effectively. Essential audiovisual support should be provided to the teachers for effective delivery of lecture. Key words: Large group teaching; medical college. This descriptive cross sectional study was carried out to assess the current status of practice of Quality Assurance Scheme(QAS) in different government and non-government medical colleges of Bangladesh. Principals/academic coordinators and students of all the medical colleges were the study population. Sample size were 13 principals/academic coordinators and 760 MBBS students of different phases. Convenience sampling technique was adopted to conduct the study. Two semi-structured self administered questionnaires one for the students and other for the principal/academic coordinator and one checklist were used to collect data from the respondents . Study revealed that 80.8% medical colleges have complete institutional framework of QAS and 68.1% medical colleges have fully functioning operational framework of QAS. Majority of the medical colleges (53.8%) do not have student representatives in academic coordination committee and only 23% medical colleges collected the phase wise evaluation of the course by the students. More than sixty one percent (61.54%) medical colleges have faculty development and review committee and 76.92% medical colleges have faculty development programme. Provision of exchange review visit by the academic coordinators is absent in 84.61% medical colleges. Almost all the medical colleges (92.31%) prepared and submitted the QAS report to NQAB in the last year. Regarding teaching learning 56.7% students were satisfied/very satisfied. A significant number of students (37.9%) gave negative opinion regarding recognition of students opinion in teaching learning. In the present study it was found that 9.1 % teachers of the selected medical colleges were engaged in research work in last year , 15.5% teachers had publication and 14.8% teachers presented scientific paper at various level in last year.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.6(1) 2015: 2-7

Background: Periodic students’ feedback ensures and enhances the effectiveness of the curriculum of medical subject. Objective: This study was designed to obtain students appraisal of the undergraduate pharmacology curriculum and teaching methodology. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology at Colonel Malek Medical College, Manikganj, Bangladesh from May to June, 2019 for a period of two months. Questionnaire-based data were collected from students of both sexes who had completed 3rd Professional examination. Likert Scale was applied to collect students’ feedback on pharmacology. Results: A total number of 40 students were recruited for this study of which 60.0% students were strongly agreed about organized teaching. About 47.5% students were agreed that the course was appropriate at their level and achieved their goals in Pharmacology. However, 55% of them strongly agreed that teacher provided clear constructive feedback during class. Total 60%, were agreed that the course improved their problem-solving skills. Overall, 55% students were agreed regarding their satisfaction on Pharmacology course delivery and conduction. Conclusion: In conclusion, periodic appraisal from students regarding evaluation of the student-centric undergraduate pharmacology curriculum is vital in developing efficient medical graduates. Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifaceted syndrome comprises a cluster of metabolic abnormalities including hypertension, central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and is strongly associated with developing diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Prevalence of MetS differs in different ethnic population by using different definition. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of the MetS and its component risk factors among Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel working in Chattagram Hill Tract (CHT). Materials & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2016 to February 2018 among 1455 male BGB personnel aged between 40 to 59 years and working in CHT of Bangladesh. Study subjects were selected at BGB hospital, Guimara, Khagrachari. The new International Diabetes Federation (IDF) guidelines were used to identify MetS. Detail history, clinical examination, anthropometry and blood pressure (BP) were measured and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and lipid profile were assessed. Results: Among the 1455 respondents’ BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic BP were found more than normal in 34.1, 37.7, 16.4% and 12.3% respectively. Biochemical parameters including FPG, TC, TG, and LDL-C was raised in 28.7%, 49.8%, 52.2% and 37.7% of respondents respectively. HDL-C was found decreased in 26.9% respondents. Age wise prevalence of MetS for age group 40-44, 45-49, 50-54 and 55- 59 years were found 21.3%, 21.7%, 24.1% and 26.1% of the respondents respectively. The overall prevalence of MetS was found 22.4%. Conclusion: The prevalence of the MetS in BGB personnel was found 22.4%. Appropriate measure should be taken to lower the MetS cases. Introduction: Sudden outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has affected the educational system worldwide, forced the medical colleges to close due to lock down, and disrupted the classroom face-to-face teaching process. As a result, medical colleges shifted to an online mode of teaching. The aim of this study is to find out the perception towards online classes during COVID-19 lockdown period among MBBS and BDS students at a medical college of Nepal. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out at Universal College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital among first and second year Bachelor in Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor in dental surgery students from 1st June 2020 to 30th August 2020. Ethical approval was taken from Institutional Review Committee of Universal College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital (IRC UCMS, Ref: UCMS/IRC/025/20). Convenient sampling method was used. Semi-structured questionnaire was used. Statistical Package for Social Sciences 22 was used for analysis and frequency and percentage was calculated. Results: One hundred fifty six (73.93%) students were enjoying online learning only to some extent, 135 (63.98%) felt online class not equally effective as face-to-face teaching. The students had disturbance during online classes as internet disturbance 168 (79.60%), and electricity problem 47 (22.3%). Similarly, many students 155 (73.50%) felt external disturbance, headache 26 (12.3%), and eye strain 26 (12.3%). Conclusions: Most of the students suffered from disturbances during online classes probably because of internet and electricity problem. When compulsory to conduct online classes, students felt that not more than three online classes per day should be conducted to avoid eye strain and headache.

This descriptive cross sectional study was carried out to determine the current status of faculty development in undergraduate medical education of Bangladesh. This study was carried out in eight (four Government and four Non- Government) medical colleges in Bangladesh over a period from July 2015 to June 2016. The present study had a semi-structured self-administered questionnaire for individual teacher. Total 181 teachers responded to the questionnaire. 56% of teachers said that faculty development activities were regularly conducted. About duration of faculty development activity 74% of teachers said it was 1-3 days duration. 42% of the teachers said faculty development activity conducted once in a week and 39% said occasional conduction of faculty development activity in their institute About the type of faculty development activity clinical meeting was commonest (65%), related to medical education (48%) and related to research (53%). About the topics of medical education related activities were teaching methodology (46%), assessment (32%). Research related activities were journal club (91%) and research methodology (67%). Faculty development activity was conducted through teachers association (53%) and medical education unit (50%). In conclusion some parts of FD activity are present in most of the colleges like clinical meeting, few medical education related session, and research related activity. For upgrading of medical education faculty development programme should be conducted regularly, monitoring of present programme and development of qualified resource person should be ensured.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.8(2) 2017: 2-6

This descriptive type of cross sectional study was conducted to explore the use of AV aids in undergraduate medical education in 7 government & 5 non-government medical colleges of Bangladesh by convenient sampling. Sixty (60) lecture classes were observed to estimate the proportion of the uses of different AV aids & to identify the quality use of different types of AV aids by observation checklists. Views were also taken from 20 teachers regarding the quality use of different types of AV aids by open ended questions. Study revealed that 20% teachers used CB/WB, 15% used OHP and 65% used PPT. Most of the CB/WB & PPT users maintained the quality use of these media but not OHP. Readability and legibility of handwriting or text of all media were acceptable in 78% lectures but it was 33% in OHP lectures. Students' attention was also less in OHP. Regarding number of words per acetate sheet/slide, only 33% OHP lectures met the standard criteria & 72% PPT slides met this criterion. In open ended questions, 25% teachers choose CB/WB, 10% Choose OHP and 65% choose PPT. Study recommended that use of clean, multi-color and good quality chalk/marker & board/screen are essential for effective teaching learning session. Adequate lighting, AC lecture class/gallery, proper sound systems & training on different AV aids are also needed to standardize the quality use of AV aids in lecture classes.Medicine Today 2016 Vol.28(2): 48-51

Introduction: Patients’ satisfaction is one of the established yard sticks to measure success of the hospitals. To improve the quality of services, health organizations use patient satisfaction survey to evaluate their processes delivered. A satisfied patient is more likely to develop a deeper and longer lasting relationship with their medical service providers, leading to improved compliance, continuity of care, and ultimately better outcomes. Objectives: To assess the patients satisfaction with services provided and the infrastructure facilities of Border Guard Hospital, Guimara (BGHG), of Khagrachari district Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among the patients who attended the outpatient department of BGHG from January to December 2017. Total 1340 patients aged more than 18 years, irrespective of sex, having no serious complications and willing to participate were selected by convenient sampling. Data were collected by semi-structured questionnaire by face to face interview and analyzed by SPSS 21.0. Results: Out of 1340 respondents 53.7% were serving BGB members, 18.3% were BGB families and 28.0% respondents were local residents. Majority of the patients stated that the general basic facilities at the hospital were adequate. Regarding cleanliness 94.7%, waiting room sitting facilities 91.9%, drinking water availability 88.4%, lighting arrangement 96.7%, ventilation arrangement 88.1% and toilet facilities 91.1% respondents reported that the hospital facilities were adequate. Most of the respondents were satisfied with the quality of professional services by all type of staffs of the hospital. Highest 84.9% of the respondents were satisfied with doctors’ attitude, behavior and cooperation. About other staffs; 72.9% respondents were satisfied with attitude, behavior and cooperation of nurses, 71.9% with pharmacists, 71.1% with registration clerk, 75.3%, with information desk, 70.2% with guards and 73.8% with supporting staffs. Conclusion: Patients attended at BGHG was highly satisfied about the infrastructure and the services provided the hospital. But few percentages of patients expressed their dissatisfaction. Background and Objectives: Due to Covid-19 lockdown period undergraduate medical institutions across the country are moving towards e-learning for continuity of education. The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of students towards e-learning and to analyze medical students’ perception on e-learning vs. conventional learning. Materials and Method: This was a descriptive cross sectional study conducted by distributing an online semi-structured questionnaire consisting Likert scale to undergraduate medical students of Kathmandu Medical College. Data assembled from the survey were analyzed and Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) 24 version software was used for data analysis. Result: A total of 273 students were enrolled in this study. Most of the students, 83.9% (229) had the perception that conventional teaching method was the best method for learning as compared to e-learning method 16.1% (44). The students mentioned that conventional method of learning is more effective to increase knowledge than e -learning (M= 3.87, M= 2.80) which was statistically significant (p=0.000). Conclusion: E-learning was the only option for students to study during lockdown period. But students preferred conventional method of learning as compared to e-learning. It might be due to some disadvantages of e-learning, eg. Technical difficulties, lack of interaction with teacher  and patients, etc. So, these measures have to be addressed for improving e-learning for betterment of teaching-learning activity during these types of circumstances in future.
