Developmental stages of pierid butterfly Catopsilia crocale Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) and its association with Cassia alata: Family-Leguminosae (host plant) was studied in the laboratory under 24 ± 5°C temperature with RH 66 ± 2%. The host plant association and duration of developmental stages was given importance. Duration of life cycle (egg to adult) was 22.0 ± 0.8 days. The incubation period, larval and pupal period were 6.65 ± 0.4, 10.1 ± 0.8 and 6.5 ± 0.44 days, respectively. Eggs, five larval instars and pupal stages were distinct. Correlation was found among the development of larval instars, amount of food consumption and excretion of faeces. The association of C. crocale with host plant was characterized and evidenced by the use of C. alata leaves, buds, stems and shoots for egg laying and for complete development of the larval (9 - 11 days) and pupal (6 - 7 days) stages. The incubation period, different larval instars and pupal stage were found to be deeply associated with the phenological phases of the host plant.Journal of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, Vol. 39, No. 1, 91-101, 2015

Developmental stages in the life cycle of lycaenid butterfly, Lampides boeticus (Lepidoptera : Lycaenidae) and their association with the host plant (Lupinus nanus) (Fabaceae) were examined both in the laboratory under 29 ± 3ºC temperature with RH 78 ± 2% and field conditions. The oviposition behaviour, incubation and larval‐pupal period of the butterfly and its association with L. nanus were studied. The host plant association and duration of developmental stages were given importance. Duration of life cycle (egg to adult) was 19 ‐ 21 days. Eggs, four larval instars and pupal stages were distinct. Lampides boeticus was found deeply associated with L. nanus to complete its life cycle. This association with host plant was characterized and evidenced by the use of host leaves, flowers, buds and seeds ( pods) both in the larval (11 ‐ 13 days) and pupal (4 ‐ 6 days) stages. The incubation period, different larval instars and pupal stage were found to be associated deeply with the phenological phases of the host plant. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. Developmental stages of pierid butterfly (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) Eurema hecabe, duration and survival rate of developmental stages was studied in laboratory condition under 29 ± 3ºC temperature with RH 78 ± 2%. Egg, five larval instars and pupal stage were distinct. The average duration from egg to adult, incubation period, larval and pupal period was recorded 22.0 ± 0.7, 5.7 ± 6, 10.5 ± 0.4 and 6.5 ± 0.4 days, respectively. Twenty seven out of 34 larvae were successfully completed their whole 5 instars. Positive correlation among the larval instars, amount of food consumption and excretion of faeces were observed. The biology of the gram blue butterfly, Euchrysops cnejus (Fabricius) (Lycaenidae: Lapidoptera) and its relationship with the phenology of host plant cowpea, Vigna unguiculata L. (Fabaceae) were studied. Eggs were reared under the laboratory conditions at 28 ± 20C and 74 ± 3% RH. The incubation period of the eggs found to be 2.33 ± 0.51 days, larval developmental period 14.65 ± 0.51 days, pre-pupal period 0.30 ± 0.04 day and pupal period 5.66 ± 0.51 days. The species took 22.94 ± 0.55 days for development from egg to adult under the laboratory condition. The length of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar larvae was 3.66 ± 0.40, 6.16 ± 0.51, 12.16 ± 0.51 and 15.33 ± 0.40 mm, respectively. The pre-pupal length was 9.16 ± 0.61 mm and the pupal length was 9.08 ± 0.37 mm. The host-plant occurs in the field from February to July. The butterfly appeared in March. The coincidence of the gram blue butterfly to its host-plant occurred between April and early July. Colonization experiment for the butterfly Pachliopta aristolochiae (Fabricius, 1775) (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) was carried out in the Zoological Garden, Curzon Hall, University of Dhaka and Bhawal national park, Gazipur from 2010 to 2011, and butterfly host-plants and nectar-plants were identified for this purpose. The field observations and identification confirmed that the host plant species Aristolochia indica is a creeper plant. A. indica was cultivated for the butterfly oviposition behaviour and to continue developmental stages. The oviposition behaviour of gravid female, hatching, feeding and moulting behaviour of the four larval instars, and pupation behaviour of A. indica were recorded. Both laboratory and field observations revealed that while there was availability of food, 1st and 2nd instar larvae preferred tender leaves, whereas the 3rd and 4th instar larvae fed both on young and mature leaves. However, mature larvae were also observed to feed on the stems, flower and fruits of the host-plant in absence of suitable succulent leaves. The feeding time was recorded for each larval instars and it was relatively low for 1st and 2nd instar larvae, remarkably higher in 3rd instar larvae and highest in the case of ultimate and penultimate larval instars. The egg, larval and pupal mortalities were counted during the study period. Their survivability rate was 80% or more. This result was found to stand good for a successful colonization process of the butterfly P. aristolochiae.J. Biodivers. Conserv. Bioresour. Manag. 2017, 3(1): 45-54

The new species, Bruchophagus ayadi sp.n., is reared from seed pods of Melilotus officinalis (L.) Desr. (Fabaceae) in Iran (Lorestan). The new species is close to B. platypterus (Walk.), but differs by roundish abdomen and very gibbous, almost globular (in lateral view) mesosoma. These species can be also differentiated by some biological features. The host plant of B. platypterus is Lotus corniculatus L., whereas the new species is reared from Melilotus officinalis (L.) Desr. Holotype of Bruchophagus ayadi sp.n. is deposited in the collection of I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv).

This study aimed to estimate the virulence of an indigenous Beauveria bassiana on all developmental stages of two indigenous coccinellids; Coccinella undecimpunctata and Hippodamia variegata through three application methods; direct spray, contact method, and feeding on aphids treated with the fungus (ingestion). Also, indirect effect on all developmental stages resulted from 1st larval instar treated with these application methods. All treatments were done with a concentration of 1 × 105 which was recommended in previous studies for different aphid species with a control of 0.02% Tween 80 (v/v). The mortality of 1st larval instar of both H. variegata and C. undecimpunctata and pupal stage of C. undecimpunctata were significantly increased with spray method only. Also, contact method achieved significantly higher mortality on 1st larval instar of C. undecimpunctata only. Regard to indirect effect, except of mortality of 1st larval instar of both predators and 2nd larval instar of H. variegata, other developmental instars/stages of both predators were not affected by B. bassiana through the three tested application methods in the mortality, duration, survival, cumulative survival male and female longevity, and fecundity. Therefore, both tested predatory coccinellids could be compatible with this indigenous isolate of B. bassiana where, in general, there are no negative effects of the fungus on both predators.

AbstractChemical communication is common across all organisms. Insects in particular use predominantly chemical stimuli in assessing their environment and recognizing their social counterparts. One of the chemical stimuli used for recognition in social insects, such as ants, is the suite of long-chain, cuticular hydrocarbons. In addition to providing waterproofing, these surface hydrocarbons serve as a signature mixture, which ants can perceive, and use to distinguish between strangers and colony mates, and to determine caste, sex, and reproductive status of another individual. They can be both environmentally and endogenously acquired. The surface chemistry of adult workers has been studied extensively in ants, yet the pupal stage has rarely been considered. Here we characterized the surface chemistry of pupae of Formica exsecta, and examine differences among sexes, castes (reproductive vs. worker), and types of sample (developing individual vs. cocoon envelope). We found quantitative and qualitative differences among both castes and types of sample, but male and female reproductives did not differ in their surface chemistry. We also found that the pupal surface chemistry was more complex than that of adult workers in this species. These results improve our understanding of the information on which ants base recognition, and highlights the diversity of surface chemistry in social insects across developmental stages.

The clingfish Gobiesox barbatulus shows nocturnal feeding activity, spending most part of the day stationary and adhered to the inferior part of stones. To feed, this species uses the sit-and-wait and particulate feeding tactics. It shows a carnivorous feeding habit mostly consuming small benthic crustaceans. It can move in two ways: (1) "stone-by-stone", sliding its ventral sucker disc across each stone and (2) "surf", when it takes advantage of the energy of the ebbing tide to quickly cross a distance up to four times its body length. Its reproductive season occurs between the end of spring and the beginning of summer, during which time it lays about 2,000 adhesive eggs of 1 mm each in a single layer under stones. It has more than one egg-laying session per reproductive season, therefore showing several different developmental stages. It performs fanning, mouthing and guarding of the eggs as forms of parental care. Data shown here also indicates that G. barbatulus has some shelter fidelity, being probably territorial.

The palps of all stages of Ixodes trianguliceps are provided with a ventral plate below the basal article; formerly this plate was thought to be the first palpal article. This article in the larva and nymph is produced forward into a spur, but in the female tick this spur is incorporated into the basis capituli as the sella. The hypostomes of I. trianguliceps and I. canisuga are redescribed to clear up existing inaccuracies.Ticks in which the rostrum does not extend beyond the apex of the first palpal article are found on birds, and this probably represents a primitive condition. Those with palpal spurs, which may or may not be fused with the basis capituli, are found on birds (not in Britain) or on mammals of the mouse size group, and those where the rostrum is produced beyond the first palpal article occur on a wide range of large and small animals. The longer and more heavily toothed digits of ticks appear to be associated with a wide host range and vice versa. The structure of the digit may also influence the choice of attachment sites by ticks on their hosts because the microstructure of the skin varies in different parts.Variations in size and form of the scuta of some British ticks are described, and the mean growth rate is ascertained from this data. The information shows that the material of I. ricinus and I. hexagonus is homogeneous, and that specific differences occur in size, shape, the position and type of dermal ducts and in the relation between scutal and alloscutal bristles.The morphology of Gené's organ in I. hexagonus is described. It consists of a basal sac-like portion surmounted by four horns and lined with a cuticle beneath an epithelium. The gland is a proliferation of the epithelium and located near the bifurcation of the base into the horns. A watery refractile fluid, secreted by the gland, accumulates between the epidermis and the cuticle in the horn-like extensions. Proximally the thick endocuticle and epidermis lie close together, and two cuticularized rods penetrate the endocuticle for about half-way along the stalk. The rods arise from the postero-dorsal margin of the basis capituli. Muscles, arising from the free ends of the rods, pass back to near the hind-margin of the scutum; they retract the basis capituli after egg laying and indirectly assist in the retraction of Gené's organ. A suggested mechanism for everting Gené's organ in I. hexagonus is outlined.During feeding the opisthosomatic cuticle of all developmental stages of the tick is much stretched. In the larva, where the cuticle is thin, this is effected by the flattening of the epicuticular pleats, but nymphs and females have, in addition, two longitudinal folds alongside the body which stretch to a far greater extent than do the epicuticular pleats. Similar folds are present between the hard ventral plates and the scutum and between the epimeral and median plates in the male. Coupled with the large size of the male digit, this suggests that morphologically, at least, males can imbibe blood.The growth of the leg segments of I. hexagonus is not constant from stage to stage, and as a result the shortest ‘leg-length’ of the female exceeds the longest ‘leg-length’ of the male.

Data on a genus of the Daffodils have been given in the article. The areas of species have been designated. Dates of selection work for the Daffodils have been determined. Countries and number of plant breeders of the Daffodils have been presented. The first cultivar of the Daffodil with pink crown has been specified, too.Group accessory for the 55 Daffodils from the collection of the Central Botanical Garden of NAS of Belarus has been defined. The age and authorship of the studied cultivars have been established. Assessment of their biological features in the conditions of the Central area of Belarus has been carried out. Periods and duration of some phenological phases have been established. Height of plants and sizes of flowers have been estimated. Periods of the Daffodils with a pink crown blossoming have been established. The abundance of blossoming depends on cultivar’s features and duration of their cultivation without grafting. The flowers of Daffodils with a pink crown have been measured from 6.5 to 11.5 cm. For the long-cupped Daffodils sizes and forms of crowns are various. The multiplication factor during the three years cultivation fluctuates from 5 to 16 units. Grades are rather steady in local conditions against diseases and pests.From studied cultivars the 13 best ones have been recommended for cultivation.
