Lignosus bean is a perennial vine of Fabaceae. Green seeds, tender leaves and twigs are used as vegetable and dry split cotyledons as pulse soup. Canopy characters, growth and biochemical features of the two genotypes, ‘G1’ and ‘G2’, of Lignosus bean were studied. Numbers of leaf meter-1 vine, % fertile inflorescence plant-1, green pod yield plant-1 and dry mass plant-1 were greater in G1 genotype (10.11, 73.17%, 3.21 kg and 2.68 kg, respectively) than G2 genotype (9.55, 66.52%, 2.80 kg and 1.97 kg, respectively). On the other hand, leaflet area, inflorescence length, number of node and pod inflorescence-1, fresh pod length and width, hundred fresh seed weight and shell ratio were higher in G2 genotype (33.26 cm2 , 9.47 cm, 24.33, 3.51, 6.99 cm, 1.55 cm, 125.08 g, 83.61%, respectively) than that in the G1 one (29.04 cm2 , 0.61 cm, 8.32 cm, 16.0, 2.52, 6.56 cm, 1.35 cm, 80.57 g, 72.69%, respectively). Total soluble solids of seed; and total chlorophyll of leaf and seed were also higher in G2 (31.43%, 59.19 mg/l and 0.83 mg/l, respectively) but Vitamin C of green seed was higher in G1 genotype (43.84 mg%). Forty-four hyacinth bean genotypes were evaluated for different qualitative and quantitative characters during July 2005 to February 2006 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur. The genotypes showed considerable variations for most of the morpho-physical traits. Shape, size and colour of vein, leaf, petiole, stem, flower, pod and seed varied among the genotypes. Days to first flower ranged from 47.6 to 136.3 days indicating the presence of early variety. Individual pod weight varied from 1.47 (HB042) to 12.3g (HB009). The genotype HB027 produced the maximum number of pods/ plant (425) closely followed by HB001 (385). Similar trend was observed for pod yield/plant. The genotype HB027 produced the highest pod yield/plant (3.45kg) followed by HB001 (3.35kg). 100-green seed weight ranged from 4.0g to 73.33g, which indicated the presence of bold seeded genotypes. Among the genotypes, HB027 and HB007 produced very bold green seed and higher green pod yield/plant, therefore, they can be selected for both pod and green seed production purpose. Studies on genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance were carried out with 14 genotypes of Lablab bean (Lablab purpureus L.) cultivated at the Agro-ecological zone9 (AEZ-9) comprising the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain Soil. Considerable amount of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation was observed for all characters studied. Phenotypic variation was greater than that of the genotypic variations for all the characters. The greater portion of total phenotypic variation was due to the genotypic variation. Highest genetic and phenotypic variation were observed for green pod yield per plant (1882.68 and 2108.43, respectively) and 100-green seed weight (1380.91 and 1452.07, respectively) Heritability values were higher for days to maturity (81.37) , number of raceme per plant (80.62), pod length (99.43), pod width (99.27), green pod yield per plant (89.29), dry shelling percentage (91.58), seed yield per plant (84.93) and protein content (98.11) indicating the better potentials of improving these characters for improvement of yield. Abstract This research aims to determine the relationship between yield and yield components of French bean using multivariate statistical techniques. The study was conducted at Horticulture Research Station, Dailekh, Nepal for consecutive three year of 2016-2018. In this study, six French bean genotypes were used. The following measurements and observations were made: germination (%), pod length (cm), pod diameter (mm), individual pod weight and number of seeds pod-1, number of dry pods plant-1, dry pod yield plant-1 and dry pod yield (t/ha), 100 seed weight (g) and seed yield (t/ha). Highly significant and positive correlation was recorded between seed yield and individual pod weight (r=0.659***), number of seed pod-1 (r=0.548**) and pod length (0.459*). Conversely, pod diameter showed a negative and non-significant (-0.025) correlation on seed yield. Based on simple regression analysis, linear regression of individual pod weight, number of seed pod-1 and pod length leads to an increase in the seed yield (t/ha) by 0.188, 0.285 and 0.103 units respectively. From the path coefficient analysis maximum positive direct effect on seed yield was recorded by number of seeds pod-1 (0.767) followed by 100 seed weight (0.530) and individual pod weight (0.429). Also, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis revealed that three traits including individual pod weight, 100 seed weight and number of dry pod plant-1 with R2 = 68.22% showed their overall contribution towards seed yield. The rest of the variance (R2 = 31.78%) was contributed by the variables that were not included in the study. Results concerning four statistical methods showed that individual pod weight appeared to be most effective contributor of seed yield followed by the number of seed pod-1, 100 seed weight, and pod length. Therefore, attention should be paid to these characters in any breeding program during the selection criteria for improving the seed yield.

Abstract Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is an important tropical legume crop contributing significantly to food security in tropical regions. The present study was carried out to determine the extent of genetic variation, to estimate character associations, heritability and genetic advance of 25 quantitative traits in 30 genotypes of cultivated Vigna unguiculata from the western highland region of Cameroon. These quantitative traits were selected among cowpea descriptor lists. For all these traits, the analysis of variance showed significant difference among genotypes, highlighting the existence of important genetic divergence among the studied accessions. The highest phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation was observed in grain yield, pod yield and 100 seed weight. Genetic advance of these three characters was also the highest. Broad sense heritability was high in general, with 20 traits out of 25 having heritability values greater than 70%. This high heritability indicates little influence of the environment on these characters in cowpea. The highest heritability was recorded for 100 seed weight (98.15%) and the lowest for shoot weight (41.38%). At 0.05 probability level, grain yield correlated significantly with 21 out of the 24 other quantitative traits. Among others, grain yield correlated positively and significantly with 100 seed weight, number of pods per plant, number of branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, plant height, plant width, pod length, pod width, seed length, seed width and number of seeds per pod. These positive correlations between grain yield and many other traits indicate that a selection program based on any of these traits will result in increasing yield. Cluster analysis using UPGMA method revealed five distinct clusters. Genotypes named KEBCP025, KEB-CP006, KEB-CP098, KEB-CP070, and more importantly KEB-CP054 and KEB-CP004, were grouped in a single cluster and were characterized by a significantly higher grain yield, pod yield, number of pods per plant, number of seed per pod, plant height, pod length and pod width compared to other clusters. Accessions KEB-CP036 and KEB-CP031 produced significantly more important fresh biomass. These genotypes could be used as parents in genetic improvement programs aiming to increase yield and fresh biomass in cowpea.

Genetic divergence in the 54 genotypes of pea was worked-out using Mahalanobis’s D<sup>2</sup> statistics to identify the potential parents to be involved in the hybridization programme so that superior segregants can be selected in the segregating generations. On the basis of performance of various traits, 54 genotypes of pea were grouped into four clusters and maximum number of genotypes was accommodated in cluster II. The average intra-cluster distance was found maximum in cluster II and minimum in cluster III. Inter-cluster distance was maximum between cluster II and III indicating that hybridization between genotypes from cluster II and III can be utilized for getting the superior recombinants in segregating generations. Furthermore, on the basis of cluster means for various traits studied, cluster II was found superior for number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod, shelling percentage, pod yield, total sugars and total soluble solids, whereas cluster III was found superior for plant height and total phenols. Hence, hybridization between parents from cluster II and cluster III for these characters may produce new recombinants with desired traits in the segregating generations which can be further purified by various plant breeding schemes.

The study of the effect of three well known mutagens, ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS), methyl methane sulphonate (MMS) and gamma rays (GR) on the yield contributing traits of the urdbean variety TPU-4 were carried out in the M3 generation. Effect of selected mutagenic treatments/doses of EMS (0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 M), MMS (0.0025, 0.05 and 0.01 M) and (GR) (30, 40 and 50 KR) on different yield contributing traits like plant height, plant spread, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod, seed yield per plant and 100 seed weight were analyzed in the M3 populations of the variety TPU-4. Seeds of M2 plants and control were harvested separately and sown to raise M3 population.. Genetic variabilty in the mutagen administered M3 progeny of the urdbean variety TPU-4 was analyzed by employing statistical methods. Data on mean values and shift in the mean of seven quantitative traits was evaluated on individual plant basis. The experimental findings revealed that concentrations / dose of the all these mutagens showed inhibitory effect on plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length and number of seeds per pod. Lower concentrations of mutagens exerted a promotory effect on plant spread, 100 seed weight and seed yield per plant while higher concentrations of these mutagens inhibited them to different extent.

Background: The present germplasm of cluster bean lack the needed natural variability for developing early maturing short statured lines. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the magnitude of heritable variability stimulated through induced mutation in M3 generation. Methods: M3 generation seeds of cluster bean variety MDU1 treated with gamma rays, electron beam and combination of gamma ray with EMS were used in the present investigation. The biometric observations were recorded on ten selected M3 plants from each family of every treatments for six traits viz., plant height, days to first flowering, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length and pod yield per plant. The same method was followed for recording observations on untreated parental materials also. Result: Studies on the variability parameters indicated that the phenotypic variance, genotypic variance, heritability and genetic advance were higher in combination treatment for all the traits. The shortest mutant and the earliest flowering (3M11) was observed in combination of 100 Gy of gamma ray+20 mM EMS. Mutant for the highest number of clusters (3M3) was observed in combination treatment of 300 Gy gamma ray with 20 mM EMS. The mutants for the highest number of pods per plant (3M1 and 3M2) and the highest pod yield (3M1) were identified at 400 Gy of gamma ray treatment. Fifteen desirable mutants were selected and forwarded to next generation for testing the stability in different environments.

The objective of the study was to elucidate the best combination of ethylene dose and exposure time aiming the degreening of ‘Ponkan’ tangerines. Fruits harvested with fully green peel were placed in airtight boxes, exposed during 24, 48 and 96 h to ethylene gas at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 µL L-1, at a temperature of 20 ± 1°C and 90 ± 5% of relative humidity. On every 24 h the fruits were evaluated for color, Hue angle, total chlorophyll and carotenoids in the peel, solutes leakage, soluble solids, titrable acidity, CO2 production and fresh fruit weight loss. The degreening was more pronounced in fruits exposed to ethylene for 96 h, independently the concentration. The electrolytes leakage peel increased linearly in fruit-control and those exposed to ethylene for 24 h. In fruits treated for 48 and 96 h, electrolyte leakage was observed only during ethylene exposure. The accumulated fresh mass loss did not exceeded 1% in the fruits. The ethylene dose did not affected the fruit respiratory behavior. The best combination aiming fruit degreening was the exposure during 96 h with 5 μL L-1 of ethylene, followed by 48 to 72 hours of storage after treatment.

A field experiment was conducted to examine the effect of plant spacing on grain and fodder yield of four cowpeas varieties. Four cowpea varieties i.e. Asetenapa, Asomdwe, Hewale and Videza were sown with three plant spacing i.e. 30 x 15 cm, 45 x 15 cm and 60 x 15 cm at Samboligo in the Bongo District of the Upper East of Ghana.  The experiment was laid in randomized complete block with four replicates in factorial fashion. Cowpea variety and plant spacing significantly influenced grain yield, 1000 seed weight, nodules per plant and plant height. Plant spacing had no significant effect on stem girth, pods per plant, pod length and seed per pods. Variety ‘Hewale’ produced the highest grain yield of 991.3 kg ha-1 while Asetenapa produced the highest fodder yield of 1025.5 kg ha-1. Interactive effect between Asomdwe and 45 x 15 cm had the highest 1000 seed weight (170.6 g) while Asetenapa and 30 x 15 cm produced the highest grain yield (1072.9 kg ha-1). Variety ‘Hewale’ is recommended for commercial grain production while Asetenapa for fodder production. Asetenapa and 30 x 15 cm combination is recommended for commercial grain production.
