Periphyton is being used traditionally as rich aquatic feed for fishes throughout the countries like Cambodia, West Africa, Srilanka, India and Bangladesh. In waterlogged rice environment, it can be judiciously utilized as feed source introducing periphytophagous fish. Studies supported rice straw as suitable substrate for periphyton growth. The study of gut content of Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) from a periphyton-based rice-fish culture system in Apatani Plateau of Arunachal Pradesh, India showed maximum of 60 genera of microflora and fauna with periphytic in nature. The farmers from this rice-fish culture practice are gaining an average fish production of 500kg ha-1 180 day-1 without employing any supplementary feed. Better selection and determination of appropriate stocking density of periphytophagous fish in waterlogged rice-fields might extend the rice-fish culture towards a sustainable and self-substrating periphyton based aquaculture (SSPBA) practice. Keywords: Periphyton; Sustainable agriculture; Rice-fish; Self-substrating; Common carp; Apatani plateau. © 2009 JSR Publications. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) germplasm were sourced from Bauchi and Ibadan aimed at studying their hatchability from the various intraspecific crosses and effect of frequencies of feeding on stocking density of Carp fry. Both male and female were injected with Ovaprim at 0.5ml/kg body weight intramuscularly at a single dose. The number of eggs in 1 gram mass was determined, Fertilization rate and percentage of hatchability were calculated. One hundred and eighty (180) fry of Cyprinus carpio were randomly picked and distributed in nine bowls of 50 litres at three stocking densities with replicates for each treatment. The frequencies of feeding were in these order; Ten (10) fry per bowl of 50 litres were fed twice a day, Twenty ( 20) fry per bowl of 50 litres were fed four times a day, Thirty (30) fry per bowl of 50 litres were fed six times a day, respectively for 8 weeks with 30gm of 0.2mm Coppens starter diet. The Ib♀ x Ba♂ cross had the highest hatchability though highest fertilization rate was recorded by Ba♀ X Ba♂ cross. The various crosses had above 50% hatchability, though percentagehatchability differed significantly at (P <0.05). While the growth pattern of the different stocking densities at different feeding frequencies differed significantly (p<0.05). The intra specific crossing of different sexes from the two sources gave a higher yield as can be seen with the IB♀ x BA♂. Whereas carp fry stocked at a lower stocking density with a fewer feeding frequency had best growth.

ABSTRACT

Nitrification rate in a closed recirculating water system with different stocking density of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) had been observed in the Laboratory of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Mulawarman University. Fish were cultivated in rounded tanks with four level of stocking densities i.e. 10, 20, 30 and 40 fish/100 l in a closed recirculting water system, and fed on a commercial pellet given thrice a day at a quantity of 5% from the total body weight of fish per day. The experiment was designed completely randomized with three replications. Nitrification rate was calculated stoichiometrically through the determination of ammonia and nitrite oxidation rate. Results showed that in this experiment the ammonia and nitrite oxidation rate, and nitrification rate in a closed recirculating water system was increased with the increasing stocking density of fish. On the contrary, the growth of fish was decreased with the increasing of stocking density.

Key words : Nitrification rate, stocking density, recirculation system, common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).

The presence of Bacillus species Were investigated in the intestine of 50 fish specimens common carp Cyprinus carpio weigh range between 1400-1500g in weigh were obtained from commercial farms in north of Baghdad through period of September to December 2010.The result revealed presence of gram positive, rod shape bacteria grow in the mesosphilic temperature range. The optimal temperature was 25-35C° facultative aerobes and produce catalase an enzyme. The bacterial antagonist activity was tested with fish culture pathogenic bacteria. The modified antagonistic method results showed that Bacillus subtilus could inhibit Aeromonas hydrophila after 24 hours. The highest level of antibacterial substances of this bacillus was produced in 48 hours. The aim of this study is to isolate and identify the Bacillus spp. and study its efficacy as probiotic against A. hydrophila in a fish culture.
