This study describes the water vapour effect on the oxidation resistance of 9Cr creep resistant steels. Boiler P91 and MarBN steels were oxidized for 3000 h in a simulated humid atmosphere with ~10% water vapour. The oxidation kinetics had a stable course for 1000 h and was evaluated by the weight gain curves for both experimental steels and both oxidation temperatures. The oxidation rate was higher at 650 °C versus 600 °C, as reflected by the oxidation rate coefficient. A significant increase occurred after 1000 h of oxidation, which was related to the local breakdown oxide scale and oxide nodules were formed on steel. This oxidation behavior was influenced by the fact that a compact spinel structure of iron oxides and alloying elements were not formed on the steel. Analysis after 3000 h of exposure showed hematite Fe2O3 formed on the outer layer, magnetite Fe3O4 on the middle layer, and the bottom layer consisted of iron-chromium-spinel (Fe,Cr)2O3.

The purpose of the study was to analyse the impact of aeration strategies defined by the changes in the duration of aerated sub-phases, the ratio between non-aerated and aerated sub-phase times (R), and dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO) on the suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in activated sludge and biofilm developing in a hybrid reactor with nitrification/denitrification. The primary factor causing NOB suppression both in biofilm and in activated sludge was an increase in the R-value (from 0 to 1/4 and from 1/4 to 1/3). After reducing the DO from 3 to 2 mg O2/L, there were no changes in the frequency of NOB occurrence, and no reduction in the nitrite oxidation rate was recorded. The abundance of Comammox bacteria was considerably affected by the change from continuous to intermittent aeration. Activated sludge showed a substantial increase in the quantity of clade A and B, whereas the quantity considerably decreased in biofilm.

Abstract To clarify the chemical characteristics, source contributions, and health risks of pollution events associated with high PM2.5 in typical industrial areas of North China, manual sampling and analysis of PM2.5 were conducted in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter of 2019 in Pingyin County, Jinan City, Shandong Province. The results showed that the total concentration of 29 components in PM2.5 was 53.4 μg·m-3; the largest contribution was from the NO3- ion, at 14.6 ± 14.2 μg·m-3, followed by organic carbon (OC), SO42-, and NH4+, with concentrations of 9.3 ± 5.5, 9.1 ± 6.4, and 8.1 ± 6.8 μg·m-3, respectively. The concentrations of OC, NO3-, and SO42- were highest in winter and lowest in summer, whereas the NH4+ concentration was highest in winter and lowest in spring. Typical heavy metals had higher concentrations in autumn and winter, and lower concentrations in spring and summer. The annual average sulfur oxidation rate (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation rate (NOR) were 0.30 ± 0.14 and 0.21 ± 0.12, respectively, with the highest SO2 emission and conversion rates in winter, resulting in the SO42- concentration being highest in winter. Although the emission rate of SO2 was low in summer, its conversion rate was high. In winter and autumn, NORs were significantly higher than in spring and summer, and a higher NOR in autumn contributed to significant elevation of the NO3- concentration in autumn relative to spring and summer. The average concentration of secondary organic carbon in 2019 was 2.8±1.9 μg·m-3, and it comprised approximately 30% of total OC. The health risk assessment for typical heavy metals showed that Pb poses a potential carcinogenic risk for adults, whereas As may pose a carcinogenic risk for adults, children, and adolescents. Positive matrix factorization analysis indicated that coal-burning emissions contributed the largest fraction of PM2.5, accounting for 35.9% of the total. The contribution of automotive emissions is similar to that of coal, at 32.1%. The third-largest contributor was industrial sources, which accounted for 17.2%. The contributions of dust and other emissions sources to PM2.5 were 8.4% and 6.4%, respectively.

Lifestyle interventions with weight loss can improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes (T2D), but mechanisms are unclear. We explored circulating and skeletal muscle metabolite signatures of altered peripheral (pIS) and hepatic insulin sensitivity (hIS) in overweight and obese T2D individuals that were randomly assigned a 12-week Paleolithic-type diet with (diet-ex, n = 13) or without (diet, n = 13) supervised exercise. Baseline and post-intervention measures included: mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and lipidomics of skeletal muscle and plasma; pIS and hIS; ectopic lipid deposits in the liver and skeletal muscle; and skeletal muscle fat oxidation rate. Both groups lowered BMI and total % fat mass and increased their pIS. Only the diet-group improved hIS and reduced ectopic lipids in the liver and muscle. The combined improvement in pIS and hIS in the diet-group were associated with decreases in muscle and circulating branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolites, specifically valine. Improved pIS with diet-ex was instead linked to increased diacylglycerol (34:2) and triacylglycerol (56:0) and decreased phosphatidylcholine (34:3) in muscle coupled with improved muscle fat oxidation rate. This suggests a tissue crosstalk involving BCAA-metabolites after diet intervention with improved pIS and hIS, reflecting reduced lipid influx. Increased skeletal muscle lipid utilization with exercise may prevent specific lipid accumulation at sites that perturb insulin signaling.

Iron normally exists in the form of ferrous ion (Fe2+) in primary ore deposits of valuable metals. To remove iron from hydrometallurgical leaching solution or suspension by precipitation, ferrous ion should be oxidized to ferric ion (Fe3+) first. Due to the low oxidation rate of Fe2+ by the traditional oxygen oxidation method, industry has to use more agitating barrels, steam, and compressed gas, as well as a larger workshop area, which dramatically increases the equipment investment and operation costs. In this study, a strengthened oxygen oxidation method for Fe2+ using a homemade venturi jet microbubble generator is proposed. Microbubbles of air, oxygen, or oxygen-enriched air can be formed in the leaching solution or suspension, which can greatly improve the dissolved oxygen content in the solution and increase the gas-liquid contact area, thereby accelerating the oxygen oxidation rate of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and realizing the rapid iron removal of the leaching solution or suspension. By measuring the residual concentration of Fe2+ in the solution after oxidation reaction, it was found that the pump power, solution temperature, pH, concentration of Cu2+, and solution flow rate had great effects on the oxidation performance of the produced microbubble. By analyzing the images of the microbubbles and measuring the dissolved oxygen content in the solution, it is confirmed that the accelerated oxidation reaction rate of Fe2+ using the new proposed method was mainly due to the increase of the dissolved oxygen amount in the solution. Moreover, this method can significantly increase the purification depth of iron ion, expand production capacity, and decrease energy consumption.

Abstract In this paper, we describe a channel self-alignment process to produce High-Voltage VDMOSFETs in 4H-SiC. We use polysilicon as a mask for two injection methods, Because the oxidation rate of polysilicon is different from that of silicon carbide, we can generate a certain thickness of silicon oxide flank wall by controlling the oxidation rate and time. Therefore, there will be a certain distance between the N+ source region and the Pbase region, and this distance is the length of the channel. Obviously, no pattern transfer occurs between the two ion implantation processes, so the channel is self-aligned. As long as the thickness of the side wall is controlled accurately, the channel length of sub-micron can be obtained.

Abstract The incremental exercise test is the most common method in assessing the maximal fat oxidation (MFO) rate. The main aim of the study was to determine whether the progressive linear RAMP test can be used to assess the maximal fat oxidation rate along with the intensities that trigger its maximal (FATmax) and its minimal (FATmin) values. Our study comprised 57 young road cyclists who were tested in random order. Each of them was submitted to two incremental exercise tests on an electro-magnetically braked cycle-ergometer - STEP (50 W·3 min-1) and RAMP (~0.278 W·s-1) at a 7-day interval. A stoichiometric equation was used to calculate the fat oxidation rate, while the metabolic thresholds were defined by analyzing ventilation gases. The Student’s T-test, Bland-Altman plots and Pearson’s linear correlations were resorted to in the process of statistical analysis. No statistically significant MFO variances occurred between the tests (p = 0.12) and its rate amounted to 0.57 ± 0.15 g·min-1 and 0.53 ± 0.17 g·min-1 in the STEP and RAMP, respectively. No statistically significant variances in the absolute and relative (to maximal) values of oxygen uptake and heart rate were discerned at the FATmax and FATmin intensities. The RAMP test displayed very strong oxygen uptake correlations between the aerobic threshold and FATmax (r = 0.93, R2 = 0.87, p < 0.001) as well as the anaerobic threshold and FATmin (r = 0.88, R2 = 0.78, p < 0.001). Our results corroborate our hypothesis that the incremental RAMP test as well as the STEP test are reliable tools in assessing MFO, FATmax and FATmin intensities.

To assess the physiological demand of including high-intensity efforts during continuous exercise, we designed a randomized crossover study, where 12 physically active young males executed three different exercises in random order: FATmax - continuous exercise at the highest fat oxidation zone (FATmax); 2min-130% - FATmax interspersed by a 2-min bout at 130% of the maximal oxygen uptake associated intensity (iV̇O2max); and 20s:10s-170% - FATmax interspersed by four 20-s bouts at 170%iV̇O2max interpolated by 10s of passive recovery. We measured oxygen uptake (V̇O2), blood lactate concentration ([LAC]), respiratory exchange rate (RER), fat and carbohydrate (CHO) oxidation. For statistical analyses, repeated measures ANOVA was applied. Although no differences were found for average V̇O2 or carbohydrate oxidation rate, the post-exercise fat oxidation rate was 37.5% and 50% higher during 2min-130% and 20s:10s-170%, respectively, compared to FATmax, which also presented lower values of RER during exercise compared to 2min-130% and 20s:10s-170% (p<0.001 in both), and higher values post-exercise (p=0.04 and p=0.002, respectively). The [LAC] was higher during exercise when high-intensity bouts were applied (p<0.001 for both) and higher post-exercise on the intermittent one compared to FATmax (p=0.016). The inclusion of high-intensity efforts during moderate-intensity continuous exercise promoted higher physiological demand and post-exercise fat oxidation. Novelty bullets • The inclusion of 2-min efforts modifies continuous exercise demands • Maximal efforts can increase post-exercise fat oxidation • 2-min maximal efforts, continuous or intermittent, presents similar demands
