The present study was conducted at the Research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, during March to June 2014 to examine the effect of Phosphorus on the growth and yield of Sesame. BARI Til-3 variety was used for the study. This experiment was consisted of single factor eg. phosphorus. There were three levels of phosphorus viz. (i) P0 (0 % P), (ii) P1 (20 % P) and (iii) P2 (30 % P) and the experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with six replications. Different levels of phosphorus showed significant effect on growth and yield of sesame. Individually phosphorus had significant effect on highest plant height, number of leaves plant-1, number of primary branches plant-1, number of secondary branches plant-1, number of capsule plant-1, number of seeds capsule-1, 1000 seed weight, seed yield and harvest index. The highest plant height of sesame (136.30 cm), the highest no leaves plant-1 of sesame (34.44), number of primary branches plant-1 (5.56), number of secondary branches plant-1 (7.61), number of capsule plant-1 (25.87), number of seed capsule-1 (70.47),1000 seed weight (3.54), Seed yield (1581.00 kg ha-1), Stover yield (3034.42 kg ha-1), biological yield (4615.76), harvest index (34.11%), oil content (43.92%) was recorded from P1. Again, the highest days to first flowering of sesame (31.67) was recorded from P1 (20 % P) but the highest days to maturity was (85.67) recorded from P2 (30% P). The experiment was conducted to study the effect of biochar on growth and yield of sesame. In the experiment, the treatment consisted of three varieties, viz., V1 = BARI Til- 2, V2 = BARI Til-3 and V3 = BARI Til-4, and five levels of biocharviz., B0= control (no biochar application), B1= 2 t ha-1, B2= 4 t ha-1, B3= 6 t ha-1 and B4= 8 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in two factors randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.Variety, application of different levels of biochar and their interaction showed statistically significant variation in plant height, number of leaves plant-1at 55 and 80 DAS and at harvest, capsules plant-1, seeds capsule-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, stover yield, biological yield and harvest index.The highest plant height (70.34, 110.95 and 109.84 cm at 55 and 80 DAS and at harvest respectively), number of leaves plant-1 (80.47, 116.70 and 94.54 at 55, 80 DAS and at harvest, respectively), number of branches plant-1 (3.60), capsules plant-1(80.47), number of seeds capsule-1(56.02),seed yield(1.07tha-1)andharvestindex(36.46%)were observed in the variety BARI Til-4 cultivated with the application of biochar @ 6 t ha-1 (V3*B3) and the lowest one was observed in variety BARI Til-2 with no biochar application (V1*B0).Biochar is effective for increasing growth and yield of sesame. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, and Mymensingh to study the effect of phosphorus and boron on the growth and yield of var. BARI Jharsheem-3 along with French bean during November 2017 to March 2018. The experiment was comprised of two factors involving number of levels viz. phosphorus had four levels  15, 20, 25 and 35 kg ha-1 and four levels of boron viz. 0, 0.5, 1.0 and  1.5 kg  ha-1. Triple super phosphate and Borax were used as source of phosphorus and boron, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results exhibited that yield and its contributing characters were significantly influenced by the phosphorus and boron applications. The experimental findings revealed that highest  number of pods per  plant (4.95), pod length (13.06 cm), number of seeds per pod (4.34), and 1000-seed weight (427.99 g), seed yield (1.40 t ha-1), stover yield (1.76 t ha-1), biological yield (3.16 t ha-1) and harvest index (46%) were recorded under phosphorus level at 25 kg ha-1. The experimental findings also revealed that the highest number of pods per plant (4.91), pod length (14.45 cm), number of seeds  per pod (4.36), and 1000-seed weight (427.22 g), seed yield (1.39 t ha-1), stover yield (1.68 t ha-1), biological yield (3.07 t ha-1) and harvest index (45.27 %) were recorded  under boron level at 1.5 kg ha-1. In case of  interaction of phosphorus and boron, the highest number of pods  per plant (5.18),  pod length (14.35 cm), number of seeds pod-1 (4.84), and 1000-seed weight (427.19 g), seed yield (1.86 t ha-1), stover yield (2.05 t ha-1), biological yield (3.91 t ha-1) and harvest index (47.57 %) were recorded under P level at 25 kg  ha-1  and B level at1.5 kg ha-1. So it may be concluded that 25 kg P ha-1 and 1.5 kg B ha-1 could be applied to obtain higher yield of bean.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University to observe the effect of sowing methods and weeding regimes on the yield of sesame. The experiment comprised of two factors. Two methods of sowing i.e., broadcasting and line sowing (S2), and six weeding regimes- control (T0), weed free (T1), one hand weeding at 15 DAS (T2), two hand weedings at 15 and 30 DAS (T3), three hand weedings at 15, 30 and 45 DAS (T4) and application of Panida (Pendimethalin) herbicide (T5) at 3 DAS. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Almost all the yield characters of sesame were affected significantly due to sowing methods, weeding regime and their interaction. Result showed that the l ine sowing showed better performance regarding plant height (100.40 cm), number of branches (4.983) plant–1, number of capsules plant–1 (47.82), number of seeds capsule–1 (69.66), 1000–seed weight (2.96 g), seed yield (956.90 kg ha–1), stover yield (2167.0 kg ha–1), biological yield (3123.00 kg ha–1) and harvest index (31.45%) than that of broadcasting method. Also weed free treatment had the highest plant height (101.90 cm), highest number of branches (5.00) plant-1, highest capsule (47.08) plant–1, heaviest 1000–seed weight (3.28 g), highest number of seeds capsule–1 (76.22), highest seed yield (974.30 kg ha–1), stover yield (2947.0 kg ha–1) and biological yield (3922.0 kg ha–1) as compared to other treatments while unweeded plot had least significant effect among the whole yield and yield attributes of sesame. In case of interactions, both weed free treatment and herbicidal effect with line sowing methods produced the highest plant height, number of branches and capsules plant–1, seeds capsule–1, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield (109.80 cm, 5.967, 56.57, 81.53, 1054.0 kg ha–1, 3139.0 kg ha–1 and 4193.0 kg ha–1, respectively) as compared to other interaction combinations. The results of the study reveal that the weed free treatment along with line sowing would be the proper technique for higher production of sesame. But line sowing along with application of Panida herbicide would be the best combination for obtaining higher yield of sesame since it is not feasible for the farmers to keep their field weed free throughout all the growing periods. A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2013 to study response of clusterbean varieties to fertility levels and agro-chemicals at SKN College of Agriculture, Jobner. The experiment consisted of two varieties (RGC-1038 and RGC-1066), three treatments of fertility levels (control, 50% RDF and 100% RDF) and three treatments of agro-chemicals (control, thiourea 500 ppm twice at vegetative and pre flowering stage and thiourea 100 ppm twice at vegetative and pre flowering stage) thereby making eighteen treatment combinations tested in randomized block design with three replications. The results indicated that RGC 1066 variety recorded significantly higher plant height 60 DAS and at harvest and dry matter per meter row length at 30 DAS, 60 DAS and at harvest, number of pods/plant and seeds/pod, test weight, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield as compared to variety of RGC-1038. The result further indicated that application of fertilized 100% RDF significantly gave higher plant height at 60 DAS and at harvest similarly, dry matter per meter row length at 30 DAS, 60 DAS and at harvest, number of pods/plant and seeds/pod, test weight, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield recorded higher over control and fertilized with 50% RDF. Likewise, application of agro-chemical @ thiourea (500 ppm) significantly increased the plant height at 60 DAS and at harvest and dry matter per meter row length at 30 DAS, 60 DAS and at harvest, number of pods/plant and seeds/pod, test weight, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield and remained at par with the application of agro-chemical @ TGA (100 ppm) over control. However, plant height at 30 DAS remained materially unchanged under different varieties, fertility levels and agro-chemicals.

The present research was conducted at the experimental field of Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna during Rabi season 2016-17 to investigate the growth and yield performance of mustard varieties. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design consisting of eight mustard varieties (viz. BARI Sarisha-8, BARI Sarisha-11, BARI Sarisha-13, BARI Sarisha-14, BARI Sarisha-15, BARI Sarisha-16, Rai and Tori-7) as treatment and replicated thrice. All the growth, yield attributes and yield were substantially influence among the mustard varieties except the phenological parameters. Results of the experiment showed that the highest plant height (131.33 cm), seed yield (1813.33 kg ha-1) and stover yield (3876.67 kg ha-1) were found in BARI Sarisha-16. BARI Sarisha-11 was found better in respect of maximum siliqua plant-1, weight of seeds plant-1, 1000-seed weight and harvest index. Besides this, BARI Sarisha-14 showed the maximum number of seeds siliqua-1. Therefore, findings of this study suggested that BARI Sarisha-16 would be suitable for better productivity and recommended for cultivation in the medium highland of Khulna region of Bangladesh.

The experiment comprising of four levels of phosphorus, i.e., 0, 20, 40 and 60 kg ha-1 and four levels of zinc, i.e., 0, 5, 10 and 15 kg ha-1 was conducted to investigate the interaction effect of phosphorus and zinc fertilization on yield and yield attributes of green gram [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] cv. SML-668. The treatments were laid out in Randomized Block Design (Factorial) with three replications. The results revealed that plant height, number of pods plant-1, 1000 seed weight, seed and stover yield were increased significantly up to 60 kg ha-1 phosphorus and 10 kg ha-1 zinc treatment levels. Further increase in zinc levels found to decrease the yield and yield attributing traits, indicating antagonistic effect of phosphorus and zinc on each other. The highest plant height, number of pods plant-1, 1000 seed weight, seed and stover yield (at 60 kg P ha-1 and 10 kg Zn ha-1 treatment level) were 48.70 cm, 27.15, 32.70 g, 957.25 and 2398.30 kg ha-1, respectively. Thus, interaction of phosphorus and zinc was significant for all the growth and yield attributing parameters.

Abstract In order to study the role of leaf position on yield and yield component of maize, this research was conducted based on randomized complete block design with three replicates at the research field of Urmia University, Urmia, Iran, in 2011. For determine the role of leaf position in maize yield, we used the leaf removing (clipping) treatments. Leaf clipping treatments contain ear leaf clipping, above ear leaf clipping, below ear leaf clipping and control (without leaf clipping) that imposed at one week after ear initiation. Leaf removing had a significant effect on all measured traits (number of seed per row, row number per ear, ear length, 1000 seed weight, seed yield, biological yield), except harvest index. Removing of above leaves decreased 6.68% the number of seeds on ear compare to control. The highest 1000 seed weight (274 g) was observed in plants without leaf clipping. Ear leaf clipping and below ear leaf defoliation ranked second for 1000 seed weight. Whereas plants without any leaf clipping had the utmost seed yield (8.77 t ha-1) but defoliating of leaf above ear lead to lower seed yield (6.77 t ha-1). Leaf removal above ear decreased 22.80% biological yield compared to control. The correlation analysis showed that all traits had positive correlation with seed yield. The most correlation was between ear length and number of row per ear (r=0.89**). Also, number of seed per row (r=0.71**), 1000 seed weight (r=0.67**), ear length (r=0.65**), biological yield and harvest index (r=0.59**) showed the most correlation with seed yield, respectively. Results revealed that the most reduction in all traits accrued in maize plants with above ear leaf clipping, this results indicated that the important roles of leaves position especially the role of above ear leaves in yield and yield components of maize.


Present study was carried out to determine the yield and growth of sesame (sesamum indicum L.) variety S-9 under foliar nitrogen doses at different application times at Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam. The experiment had been placed in a Randomized Complete Block Design with net plot size (6m2 ) with three replication. The sesame variety S-9 was used and checked under various foliar nitrogen doses at different application time treatments i.e. T1= N @ 00 kg ha-1 (control), T2= N @ 0.5 kg ha-1 (30 DAS), T3= N @ 0.5 kg ha-1 (45 DAS), T4= N @ 0.5 kg ha-1 (60 DAS), T5= N @ 1.0 kg ha-1 (30 DAS), T6= N @ 1.0 kg ha-1 (45 DAS), T7= N @ 1.0 kg ha-1 (60 DAS), T8= N @ 1.5 kg ha-1 (30 DAS), T9= N @ 1.5 kg ha-1 (45 DAS), T10= N @ 1.5 kg ha-1 (60 DAS). The results revealed that maximum values for sesame traits under study were i.e. Plant height (122.38 cm), Branches plant-1 (34.45), Capsules plant-1 (194.60), capsule length (2.65 cm), Seeds capsules-1 (56.3), Seed wt plant-1 (76.31 g), Seed index (5.69, 1000 seed wt g), Seed yield (1233.3 kg ha-1), Harvest index (11.12%), were recorded under treatment T10= N @ 1.5 kg ha-1 (60 DAS), whereas; minimum values for various sesame traits i.e. Plant height (80.57 cm), Branches plant-1 (15.47), Capsules plant-1 (130.31), Capsules length (1.30 cm), Seeds capsules-1 (30.5), Seed wt plant-1 (50.57 g), Seed index (3.34, 1000 seed wt g), Seed yield (711.7 kg ha-1), Harvest index (6.23%), in control treatment where no foliar nitrogen doses was applied. It was concluded that growth and yield increased at T10= N @ 1.5 kg ha-1 (60 DAS) and thus recommended for better performance and yield of sesame crop. A field trial was conducted to assess the performance of blackgram cultivars to row spacings and molybdenum doses at the Instructional-cum-Research Farm, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalya, Raipur (Chhattisgarh), under rainfed conditions during kharif season of 2011. The treatments comprised of three varieties viz., Indra urd-1, RU-03-16 and RU-03-52; two row spacings viz., 30x10 cm and 45 x 10 cm and three treatments of molybdenum viz., control, 4 g/kg seed and 4 g/kg seed + two spray of  urea @ 2%. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design (FRBD) with three replications. Results revealed that all the growth and yield attibutes such as number of branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, seeds/plant, seed yield (781 kg/ha), biological yield (2736 kg/ha) and harvest index (29.71%) noticed significantly higher under cultivar Indra urd-1. Similarly, maximum production efficiency (9.52 kg/ha/day), economic efficiency (Rs. 218.82/ha/day) and gross returns (Rs. 32,335/ha) were also recorded in Indra urd-1 as compared to rest of the cultivars. Further results showed that all the growth and yield attributes viz., number of  branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, seeds/plant, seed yield (778 kg/ha), biological yield (2653 kg/ha) and harvest index (29.10%) recorded significantly higher in row spacing of 30 x 10 cm as compared to 45 x 10 cm. Maximum production efficiency (9.49 kg/ha/day), economic efficiency (Rs. 216.44/ha/day) and gross returns (Rs. 32,107/ha) were also recorded in 30 x 10 cm. Application of molybdenum @ 4 g/kg seed along with 2% urea spray twice gave highest seed yield (810 kg/ha), biological yield (2698 kg/ha) and harvest index (29.25%) over control and seed treatment with molybdenum @ 4 g/kg. Similarly, application of molybdenum + 2% urea spray twice gave maximum production efficiency (9.88 kg/ha/day), economic efficiency (Rs. 226.49/ha/day) and gross returns (Rs. 33,293/ha).

A field experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka, Bangladesh during December 2013 to April 2014 to evaluate the effect of phosphorus (P0: 0 kg TSP ha-1, P1: 100 kg TSP ha-1, P2: 175 kg TSP ha-1, P3: 250 kg TSP ha-1) and potassium (K0: 0 kg MoP, K1: 60 kg MoP ha-1, K2: 120 kg MoP ha-1, K3: 180 kg MoP ha-1), and their combinations on growth and yield of soybean (Glycine max). Number of nodules plant-1, number of filled pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index increased significantly up to 175 kg ha-1 TSP. On the other hand, numbers of nodules plant-1, number of filled pods plant-1, length of pod, number of seeds pod-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, stover yield and biological yield were enhanced significantly up to 120 kg ha-1 MoP. The treatment of combined phosphorus @ 175 kg ha-1 and potassium @ 120 kg MoP ha-1 depicted the highest number of filled pods plant-1 (63.00), length of pod (3.16 cm), number of seeds pod-1 (3.11) vis a vis the highest (3.67 t ha-1) seed yield. Thus, the combined application of 175 kg ha-1 TSP and 120 kg ha-1 MoP could be the optimum for getting maximum yield of soybean.Bangladesh Agron. J. 2016, 19(1): 99-108
